Why do we (Pakistanis)believe in democracy?

By fzuberi • Feb 4th, 2008 • Category: Pakistan Vote'08, Politics • One Response

Truth is not determined by majority vote. If the majority of world leaders keep saying the Muslims are terrorists, that does not become the truth. If the majority of people say; this door is a window; in democratic terms it will be a window, that is the principle of democracy, majority is right. If the majority of people do not want honest people to rule us, there certainly won’t be any honest people over us.The fact comes to this that Mr. President was selected by Mr. Nawaz Sharif, himself elected by the largest mandate in history of Pakistan, which he holds true still, but time will tell.

If we look around us, we need not go far, the police; if caught by these public servants on the streets you are not caught in deep, just a red note will set you free and earn you a smile. If you want a loan from a bank, you will have endless lines and work to do, but if you are just a bit spendthrift, it will save you a lot of needless physical and mental exertion.

Quaid-e-Azam (father of Nation) is a term now used for Pakistani currency notes. This by the way not shows any respect to The Father of the Nation. Then, lets go to the rickshaw man, his meter never works, the smallest amount of distance and he’ll suck every penny from you.

The subzi (vegetable) monger; go to defense the price will soar, go to gulshan the price will come down.

Talk of the dentists, leave alone doctors, they’ll charge you horrendous amounts of money just by the change of location. And if by mistake you change the dentist, he’ll tell you all sorts of stories to keep you away from the last one.

I could go on and on, the biggest companies have the biggest amount of people waiting for their checks and payments. Most don’t pay until 3 or 4 months after the contract expires.

The eve on which all foreign accounts were seized by the government of Pakistan, a lot of money was squeezed from the poor and middle class families, through unthinkable and unfathomable means, through their very fingers and the people who knew the people at the top got their accounts emptied in the night before the decision, almost all were top ranking officials and elected members.

The numbers of people who are in debts and have managed to get away with it are not uneducated or unprivileged, infact they are highly educated and highly privileged. And the numbers are increasing.

The people in the streets protesting for lawyers, a just cause, but just who is protesting? The lawyers that used to sit on the foot paths, outside the courts. If they for once decided to fight for justice, shouldn’t they start from their own house. What do you call a respectable man throwing black ink on the face of another respectable man, a commendable act I suppose, by their own terms.

But my question remains, why do we believe in democracy?

Because we think that maybe if elections are held somehow all of us will change and start being honest. If none of us can accept their mistakes, then what do we hope for. Aren’t we all going after a farce, protesting like wild goose on the streets, (which is not even safe anymore). And give chances to the opposite parties to make a challenge to our calls.

Let’s all realize our mistakes, and start making amends, instead of blindly going in protests. Which the whole world watches. Our country has lost a fair share of patriots, We are no longer proud of our country. We should learn a lesson from our neighbours. They also have the same problems, but still they are proud of what they are.

What is the reason for this? Let’s solve our own problems, Let’s be proud of ourselves. Instead of being hypocrites loving Bollywood and hating India.

Let’s face the truth, We don’t hate India. But at the same time we are not patriotic as well. And let’s make amends and try not to be hypocrites. And ask the Indian Government to see the light. As well as our Government to see the light.

(lets keep striving as we are not at our destiny yet)

The world is not looking to well. There have been a lot of ranting going on here in the west, about how X could have been using Y’s death to postpone the elections, but i have only noticed people who don’t even know there will be elections the 8th. Personally my problem with many nations elections is the small number of options for the electorate. In the dutch “democracy” christians have very close opinions to extremely capitalist formations, and even the socialists hardly distinguish.
What i advise people is to voice a strong and social vote, it won’t help, because there firstly is an establishment, and secondly there is a limit to the foolishness that is acceptable in governing people,
and there are few well prepared oppositionpartys with a strong program in the worlds ‘democracy’s’.

But after the elections the people still feel more secure, because slowly over years, they will realise their progressive voices just gets stolen. In so far i agree democracy appears a useless institution,
however by boykoting elections nothing can be helped. Would there be decent elections for once,
(like eg in gaza with hamas) we will first have to learn not to get fooled over the years.
I don’t say the pakistani system is as unfair as ours, it might as well be better. Not voting is only an extra instrument in the hands of the manipulators to enlarge the confusion. It is also wise if at all possible, to voice your choice between people in the days before and after the election, it is the only way to have some control and become sure your votes have been discounted, malapropriated and stolen.
Neway.. who knows this one thing you do better. Personally i am not to sure.
