Who is Jinx in Pakistan? Why No Rain?

By Maria Sultan • Dec 26th, 2009 • Category: Politics, Worth A Second Look • 10 Comments

Drought is going on in Pakistan and despite of chilling weather, there is no rain in sight. Dark clouds come, give hope and then leave without a droplet of blessing. Grounds are cracking, crops ruined, dams dry, and people are suffering from many diseses of the dry weather.

The growing season is passing by quickly and the farmers are getting hopless and fearful about the harvest of next year. In Pakistan, shortage of food is common even despite of the bumper crops, and this is really terrible that what would become come next summer of the food crisis in the country. We would have to import literally every food item to avoid from nation-wide starvation. Rulers don’t have any worries, because they have got so much cake to eat.

Of all the natural disasters, drought whether Meteorological, Hydrological or Agricultural has the greatest potential impact as compared to other disasters like floods, tropical storms etc. as the latter are mostly of short duration and geographically limited and droughts, by contrast, affect large geographic areas often covering the whole of the countries or even parts of continents. Right now Pakistan all arid and non arid areas are experiencing acute drought, which has the potential to severely impact the whole country within coming months.

There is a common saying in Pakistan that due to the sins of a person or community rains stop coming. Who is the bad omen this time? Who has cast an evil spell? Who has brought bad luck upon all of us? Is it our collective punishment or is it because of just one person?

We all should ask for mass apology as a nation from Allah. Istasqa prayes should be offered in grounds by the whole communities.

  1. ” FATHER OF THE NATION ”

    We Salute Him ( 25-12-2009)

“Jinnah is the most important man in Asia because he can sway the battle this way or that way as he chooses. His 100 million Muslims will march to the left, to the right, to the front, to the rear at his binding and nobody else’s - that is the point. If Gandhi goes, there is always Nehru, or Rajagopalchari, or Patel or a dozen others. But if Jinnah goes, who is there?” (Beverly Nichols, British author and reporter, 1943)

“Mr. M A Jinnah himself was more advanced than most of his colleagues of the Muslim League. Indeed he stood head and shoulders above them and had therefore become the indispensable leader and eventually he became the Muslim League.” (Nehru, Discovery of India)

  2. Dear Asim

What is the point here, I thought you were commenting on the article here–Your assertion is right but not relevant at all.

There is another notion or belief for that matter especially in the north that we are reaping what we planted during that Lal Masjid Fiasco as we all kept quite against that barbarism.

  3. @Maria Sultan: Great post. (The common saying referring droughts to sins is actually a Hadith).

  4. We all know who is jinx, but I cannot say that because I dont want to be jailed. :)

  5. Serious reason behind drought is excessive human activity to environment that always ensue less rains as per seasonal dates.Deofrestation on huge scale is on eof major reason in upper and lower punjabs which should be stopped on all levels. We have done enough damage to mother land so now she is showing us her anger to us.We are just like problem childern who cant listen the plea of our mothers and keep on destroying the nature in the name of human development.
I am these days trying to find a proper NGO or any industry that would help in planted trees in all the dry channels of water resources in upper Punjab areas.
If any body knows such group let me know. These paths have been dried due to creation of dams and best places to develop linear forests that require less waters to grow is there.

  6. @4 dont worry I will name that person in place of you that can be jinxed in our homeland at that moment is our president asif ali zardari.
If I would be put in jail kindly come for my bail as I am doing courage that is being absent after seeing the threat of rehman dada who even couldnt touch the son of fauzia whaib clearly found guilty of breaching the state law made by him

  7. Jaago Pakistan Jaago! It is not Zardari or Musharaff or any other leader who is to be blamed! It is the people of Pakistan themselves who are wrong!

Forget your animosity with other countries. Revolt against Madrassa’s in your country and destroy them. Jail all the Mullah’s who misguide youth! Send all the children to school. Next time the Army comes out to stage a coup, come out in the streets and tell them to go back to their barracks.

Till now, the spineless Pakistanis have been doing just the opposite. At least learn now and take control!

  8. There is no one who must be called as Jinx —–casting his spell of curse and be called as the nemesis. If Zardari is said to be the only one who has brought all the miseries; well he is not alone there. He happens to be at the helm of all the affairs as a king of Pakistan and please do not forget that God always imposes the leaders above the masses which they really deserve.

We deserved this and got him at the end.

Any how we live in such part of the world where the climate of Pakistan is tropical in the plains and sub-tropical in the mountainous region. Temperature ranges from mean monthly minimum of 4 C during December and January to mean monthly maximum of 38C during June and July. Rainfalls in the country vary spatially, less than 10 cm in some parts and more than 50 cm in the other parts. Most of the rainfall occurs during monsoon period (July to September) in the form of torrential showers. Much of the summer rainfall is, thus, not available for agriculture because of the rapid runoff. At other times, the showers may be so light that precipitation evaporates before the water can penetrate to the root zones of crops. The contribution of rain to crops in the irrigated areas of Indus Basin has been estimated at about 7.4 Billion Cubic Meter (BCM). The rate of evaporation ranges from 150 to 200 cm annually. Therefore, there is a need for assured irrigation supplies in a large part of Pakistan, the rainfall being either meagre or unreliable.

It is estimated that the population of the country would rise to 178 million by the year 2010. In order to be self-reliant in agriculture, the field are to be increased by some 30%, cropping intensity is to be maintained to the level of 150% and additionally an area of 2 Mha is to be brought under irrigation commands. The water resources engineers and planners find a great economical advantage in the storage of some part of non-utilized 28.83 BCM water in some suitable reservoirs. Despite massive investment in irrigation sector and agriculture, Pakistan, at present, faces food shortages which are likely to become more acute in near future. Scarce water availability and continuous degradation of soil due to water logging and salinity, water and wind erosion, sodicity, flooding and ponding are some of the major obstacles in the achievement of self sufficiency. In order to achieve the envisaged growth target in agriculture, irrigation water requirements as estimated for the year 2013 would be 254.6 BCM (206.4 MAF). With the three major dams completed, the water availability for the future has been estimated to be 156.2 BCM (126.6 MAF) in the year 2025. However, in the absence of dams like Kalabagh Dam when most of the water is flowing to the sea, only a meagre potential of 30.8 BCM (25 MAF) is left for development of surface water resources. To meet the food requirements of the increasing population, it is proposed to keep the cropping intensity to 150 % and bring another area of 2 Mha under irrigation command. Improved irrigation methods are being encouraged to achieve higher water application efficiency at places where irrigation tube wells are installed. Partial lining of water courses is also being considered to minimise conveyance losses. Suitable cropping pattern is being evolved and a rational water pricing policy to meet the requirements of water equity is being planned.

Lets us count our blessing that Pakistan has got the best irrigation system through canals and their distributaries in the world.

  9. Maria there is a thing called global warming. According to climatologists Pakistan is a water stressed country and within a decade,India and Pakistan could face serious shortages of water that can affect agriculture and bring about droughts and loss of life and livestock. In Pakistan alone, it is said that once Himalayan glaciers melt, the total yield per acre could decrease by 50 percent. Therefore there could be serious issues of national security that are caused by global warming. Therefore Zardari and his cronies like Biloo boy and the clan could face major setbacks when it comes to being in power. Therefore if we are wise then we better take measures for battling climate change and protecting our environment. Global warming will also affect fisheries not only in Pakistan but in Bangladesh. Rising temperatures will also kill the coral reaf that are home to so many fish. Hence there is a chain that will be affected. It is time that the world takes measures to protect the Earth and its environment. We have to realize that the danger that global warming poses to human survival is imminent and very real. Unless we want to become an endangered species, it is time that the world focused on conserving water and other resources essential for human survival.

  10. herez your answer GENIUS! plz remember each year as the climate situation will only get worse with time unless we stop abusing the environment.
