Where is UN Probe in Benazir’s Killing?

By Rohail Butt • Aug 15th, 2008 • Category: Politics • One Response

Almost six months have passed since the Pakistan Peoples’ Party is at the helm of the affairs, while enjoying the perks of power, but still there is no formal investigation underway either from the United Nations or from any of the Pakistani security forces, and nothing is being done from the folds of PPP in this regard.

PPP got the votes as a sympathy as their leader was horrendously assassinated on 27th December in Rawalpindi in front of Liaquat Bagh, as she was on her way towards Islamabad after speaking to a public rally. It was a mayhem throughout Pakistan after her slaying, and despite of delaying the elections her party emerged as the largest party in the polls.

It was expected after the election results and after the sentimental and lofty claims by the top leadership of PPP including the widow of Benazir Bhutto and the co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari that this would become a priority. Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani also came with resounding thuds and promised an agile and result-oriented investigation in this regard.

But the matter lingered on, and after much ado at last a request was submitted to the United Nations for the probe. It’s a oldest fact in the murder investigation that as more time passes after the murder, its become more difficult to reach to the perpetrators. Still there is no response from the Secretary General of the United Nations in this regard. Pakistanis are becoming mentally prepared to accept this tragedy as yet another unsolved shrouded mystery in the history.

    Hi,
i hear the sticking point is how the Pakistani leadership at that time announced the name of baitullah Mehsud at that time? It even produced some tapes as the proof. the UN investigators want the original tapes and also want to to talk to the people who procured that wiretap and also the security personnel who relied on it.
