Three Pillars of Corruption
By Dawar Naqvi • Jul 6th, 2008 • Category: Politics • (3,455 views) • 2 CommentsPML (N) is a part of government and taking full advantages to be part of the government. Their Ministers are getting 100 % facilities provided by Pakistan government. Which includes, high salary, guest homes, power to hire, power to allot plots, power to control bureaucracy, cars with flags, free gasoline for their cars, no electricity break down in their homes, no flour shortage for them etc. They are also running the government in Punjab. But some times their leaders give statement like an opposition party.
Quite often PML (N) leaders give statement against government policies and US interference in Pakistan. On other hand Mr. Nawaz Sharif constantly does his meetings with US Assistant Secretary of State Richard Boucher or other US officials on constant basis. He meets them for what???
Two months ago he met Richard Boucher in London. After that we saw some US spying airplanes flew over Pakistan and some missile fired inside the region of Pakistan by US coalition`s forces. Now we had seen army operation launched by Pakistan government against extremists in northern province of Pakistan. Does not mean US took Nawaz Sharif in the confidence before these actions?
Now again Mr. Nawaz Sharif met Richard Boucher in Pakistan. But on other hand PML (N) leaders are fooling the public by giving statements against US interference. If US interference is such bad, why Nawaz Sharif meets US officials on constant basis? How many times they gave warning that if Judges will not reinstate they will withdraw from the government. They even crossed the limit by saying that sovereignty of Pakistan is depends on the reinstate of Judges. What is stopping PML (N) to withdraw from the government or at least resign from the ministries?
It looks like to us that three pillars of corruption are stopping PML (N) leaders to withdraw from the government. Three pillars are power, money and luxuries living style which they adopt in last 20 years.

Look below from economic point of view what is the contribution of PML N (alongwith) in Pakistan’s economic downturn in recent months:
1) It should be first highlighted what irony it was that the Finance Minister came up with the remark that the present Pakistani economy is totally fragile and destroyed and that they have to undertake serious efforts to put it back on track.
He presented a budget of nearly 2 trillion Rupees and a projected revenue of around 1.1 trillion rupees, whereas 8 years ago, this revenue was around Rs. 300 billion. The Finance Minister should have thanked the previous government for giving an economy founded on a strong revenue base. Destroyed economies don’t have exponential growth of revenues.
May I suggest that the Finance Minister in his winding up speech thank the previous government for providing such a strong base on which they can build further.
2) It is easy to condemn, and this is a pattern of all governments in Pakistan , to lay the blame at the doors of their predecessors. It is a fashionable thing to do maybe, but with such strong revenue growth figures, it is difficult for them to sustain their charges and is also very counterproductive. I wish this pattern of “blame game” may once and for all be abolished.
3) In the last 5 months, Pakistan ’s capital markets, from being one of the best performing markets in December 2007 as rated by Credit Suisse, turned into the worst performer in May 2008 especially because of the irresponsible statement by the previous Finance Minister. As captain of the ship, he literally trumped the Pakistani economy as a sinking Titanic. In his statements, he single-handedly got the attention of World Bank and IFC where he made baseless allegations and accused the governor of Central Bank on fudging the numbers. These are the kinds of statements that really derailed the positive momentum which was the hallmark of Pakistan ’s economy during the last 8 years. The captain of a ship watches out for icebergs; the previous Finance Minister literally ran the Pakistani ship into the iceberg. How responsible was that?
4) In the last 5 months, through the irresponsible nature of the managers of the economy, Pakistani debt has been downgraded. We are facing a crisis of confidence. There is lack of economic leadership and leader economists, World Bank and IMF, are very concerned for the Pakistani economy due to this very lack.
5) The good work of last 8 years has slowly but surely been butchered. Global economy today needs clarity of direction, vision, and confidence. In the last 3 months, all the three factors were overlooked by economic managers. Today, despite all the organized damage to the economy, I should commend the Finance Minister for presenting a very reasonable budget which was only possible as a result of the strong basis of the Pakistani economy and excellent performance over the last 8 years.
6) I would also like to highlight one point about consumerism – that the previous growth in economy was primarily based on consumerism and luxury goods, which is far from the truth. In the last 8 years, 70 million Pakistanis have added on to the list of people who have mobile phones and have connectivity to the world. This communicative mobility to the world is the best gift a nation can give to its people. This is a world where distance has died. Economic activities are governed and thrive through connectivity. To term this huge increase in IT and communication revolution in Pakistan as a “luxury” reflects minds that have not realized the global potential of the economy. Billions and billions of dollars in the communication infrastructure in Pakistan not only helps the tech industries, but also real estate, retail, trade and other sectors of the economy – a new level of economic activity, directly or indirectly, resulted in millions of new hi-tech jobs. The challenge is to use the potential and have the imagination to take it to the next level, to make Pakistan the hub of international communication and business. When economic tsars lack the imagination, they kill the potential and growth prospects.
* What is required is to take Pakistan to the next level and for that, vision, clarity and dedication, less politics, more work and more planning. Unfortunately these factors are missing and these are not being prioritized.
* We are at the point of a takeoff. From 400 million rupees of reserves when Pakistan was on the verge of bankruptcy, today we have handed over an economy which is far bigger. Market capitalization alone was US$75 billion. Here, extra hard work is required to move it to the next level. Instead of blaming the previous government, they should efforts to steer this ship into the right direction and take the country’s economy to a new level of performance.
* We have 100 million people in Pakistan under 25 years of age. We have to create nearly 4-5 million jobs every year. These are the challenges and the budget has not alleviated any of these challenges. I welcome the support to the 7 million people stuck on the lowest rung of the poverty ladder. The budget should also have addressed a major plan and how to create new jobs.
* We should demand performance. It is very easy to criticize; this economy is performing on a new level and needs to be taken forward now; if it implodes, the consequences are going to be disastrous. If policization of economic issues becomes the predominant tone of the government, the country will not be able to sustain the growth rate. Moody’s cut Pakistan ’s rating due to the political instability. We will not be able to float GDRs or raise bonds. Every economy needs capital inflows; they help bridge the problems created because of lack of investment capital. These inflows of capital will not come if we show mismanagement and irresponsibility.
* Pakistan has 15 million new consumers who have higher expectations. They are eating better, living better, have global connectivity. These are the features that distinguish a new economy from a jungle economy. And we see this all around us. Pakistan was taken from the age of poverty and was given a rising middle class who has higher expectations, which can only be met by productivity, efficiency, revolution, and change of thought processes. Pakistan cannot deal with modern demands with age-old backward thinking.
This nation deserved to be treated like this as it has forgotten its true MOHSINS.
