Syed Munawar Hasan : New Ameer of Jamat-e-Islami

By M Mirza • Mar 28th, 2009 • Category: Politics • 36 Comments

Qazi Hussain Ahmad let Jamat-e-Islami for more than twenty years and he miserably failed to make Jamat a serious political or social force. That and during his tenure as the ameer of Jamat-e-Islami Pakistan, many diehard and sincere Jamat leaders left the party. Qazi not only made a fool of himself he with his not-so-visionary steps made Jamat a bizare combination of ancient and quasi-modern outfit with no direction.

Qazi Hussain Ahmed tried his best to rise above the dust and become national and popular leader like Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif but he was a funny flop. His famous “Zalimo Qazi A raha hai” and the disco anthems created by some “modern” wings of Jamat did lots of damage to the party. Now thankfuly he is out and now the new ameer Syed Munawar Hussain is a decent and honest man.

In the secret ballot elections of Jamat, Syed Munawar Hasan has got more than 51% of votes from 23000+ votes  and he got most of the votes from Punjab. Other contenders for the post of Ameer-e-Jamaat were Liaqat Baloch and Sirajul Haq.

Syed Munawar Hasan belongs to Karachi and he joined Jamat in 1967. Before that he was a leftist and then became a very active worker of Jamat and remained involved in country-wide organization of the party. In his leadership, Jamat is ready to rgain its lost glory.

  1. Zalmoo qazi ja raha hay
    zalmo munwar aa raha hay.

  2. The only example of “power transfer” in Pakistan. Jamaat e islami is really a descent political force.

  3. Hope monawar will open the doors of jamaat for commen people. This is need of pakistan that masses could join a healthy political force.

  4. My dear M Mirza, it is unfair on your part for not giving Qazi sb the credit for making Jamaat e Islami a more robust political party then it ever was before. The gague for measuring the activitsim is not how much is a party popular in my opinion but how many somehow in one way or another read between the policy lines of that party and acknowledge it even if not in its entireity.

Munawar sb is as volatile as Qazi sb was. However I believe that 22 years of Qazi sb at the helmn of affairs was enough for the Jamaat too and it was a right decision by Qazi sb not to contest elections.

Credit should also be given to Qazi sb in particular for calling it a day when we know how eager the politicans of this country are to remain a party President………even by going on and making a one-man party like Ijaz ul Haq or Shekh Rashid…….and Jamaat e Islami in general fer upholding the true essence of democracy within its rank and folds.

The era of Qazi Hussain Ahmed’s emaraat of JI will be inscribed in history due to events such as Dharna in second PPP govt…resulting in the death of 4 participants and ultimate departure of the govt itself…………the lawyers movment ………. the MMA and the real idea behind it………..its subsequent blunders such as 17th Amendemnt………the role Qazi and JI under his leadership played in taking a principled or unprincipled stand by resigning from the parliments………the Vajpayees visit in 2nd Nawaz govt and protests by JI and Qazi at minar e Pakistan……..the protests by JI against american attack on Afghanistan …………. the so many failed million marches and the succeddful on at Karachi…….and so on so forth.

What precisely matters is and fer which Qazi sb undoubtedly gets the credit………..he made sure that JI keeps the street politics alive…………probably the sort of thing in making huge transitions in a nation as we saw in Long March.

  5. Qazi sahab has made JI more robust ever… May allah (swt) give him ajar for his efforts…. He was a truly great leader…

May allah (swt) help Syed Munawar Hasan to take JI to new peaks… ameen

  6. One must give the credit of teaching JI members and supporter the art of using all kind of weapons, and create fear and panic among the general population. Above all now all the ‘Jamatias’ can perform music and dance, almost best ‘bhangra’ dancers of the country are among the mullahs of this Jamaat. One more credit goes to this qazi, he helped alienating the party from its traditonal vote bank; this qazi single handedly managed total routing of his religious party from the main spectrum. Now, the jamaat can be proud of largest number of hooligans among its ranks. One more thing that this qazi must get credit for is converting his party as a strong hold of terrorists and supporters of terrorism.

  7. We need to know more about JI and it policies….A matter of fact JI Amir has not much liberty such as other Democratic (in fact Democratic Dictators) Leaders has….
in JI there are two superior bodies which are called Majlis e Shura and Majlis e Aamla, and Amir e Jamaat is bound to follow the given lines by the Shura. Let me add few more things in this that, Mr. Khurram Murad introduced the idea of Pasban ( An organization for the youths who were not active in politics) and Mohammad Ali Durrani (Former Information Minister in Musharaf regime) was the Chief of Pasban.
Khurram Murad promote the idea that JI should be more open for the common people of Pakistan, and he was inspired by the practice of Islamic Salvation Front of Algeria. Jamaat contested in 1993 elections with the name of Pakistan Islamic Front this was the Inspiration from ISF.
JI resist Communism Pakistan in Syed Modudi’s era, afterwards in the leadership of Mian Tufail, JI did resist Soviet occupation in Afghanistan with the People of Afghanistan.
They were stand agains Russia, after that they stand against USA with the People of Afghanistan.
Milli Yakjehti Council (MYC) was the results of Qazi Hussain Ahmed efforts…..MYC become a MMA…

Qazi Hussain Ahmed resigned from assembly on the issue of Lal Masjid….
Siraj ul Haq and Haroon Rashid resigned from assembly on the issue of American drone attack on a Madrasah in Bajour….

There are many ups and downs which took place under Qazi Hussain Ahmed Captainship..

What is the credit goes to JI, it is the Strong Institutional setup……. Qazi Hussain Ahemd is not being replaced by hi son or any relatives………and indeed there is no serious corruption charges against JI leadership…… this is the only example in Pakistani politics and all of us should appreciate this……bcoz in Pakistan there is no such example set by any political or religious party… even our main stream political parties are being ruled by strong families, like Bhuttos and Sharifs….. in the same manner religious parties….such as Maulana Fazal Reham, Moulana Sami ul Haq and JUP Noorani Group….. Even Dr. Israr Ahmed who believes in Khilafat and strugling for it was replace by his Son Hafiz Akif Saeed….. Bilawal Zardari, Hamza Sharif, Moonis Elahi, Awais Laghari and so many others are the Fathers or Uncles men…………………..

  8. @ Mirza,

Before joining JI, Munawar Hassan was Nazim e Ala (President) of Islami Jamiat Talaba. and befor IJT Munawar Hassan was the president of NSF (National Students Federation)….

  9. Everyone here is so fed up of corruption of political leadership that uncorrupted Jamaat-e-islami looks to be a principled party.
But people have to see the history of this party.
It opposed creation of Pakistan and opposed Jinnah from beginning. Why?
It also was instrumental in banning the Ahmediay and lahori community as non muslims
It was also responsible for creation of AL BADR which killed Bengalies as thier culture is not fit for Islam. This created the seed for Bangladesh.
It is also responsible for Hudood ordinance.
Its student wing never allowed any other student body to be created.

It was created in 1941 and also during similar time the RSS by the British. RSS job is to fight the quit India movement of Congress so that Hindus will join Britsh army .”Hinduise military and militarize Hinduism” is the call by RSS.Why British created these two diametrically hostile organizations should be known to an impartial observer
WHO FUNDS THIS ORGANISATION ? IT IS SAUDI ARABIA ON INSTRUCTIONS FROM USA from the time Pakistan was created. It suited the capitalists of Pakistan as it was used to oppose leftists and communists in labour and student movement of pakistan. Pakistani army,LET,JUD, all have ideological inspiration from this organisation.

  10. JI is nothing but extension of the Akhwan in Egypt who were well taken care of by
President Gemal Abdel Nasser the great Egyption leader of the time and still loved & revered by his people. President Ayub Khan should have taken care of this menace of JI in Pakistan also at the same time like the Egyptians did theirs. JI is the mother of all evils over here in Pakistan; they are responsible for creating this jingoistic mind set here; they are the main inspiration for terrorism in the name of our sacred religion of peace and tranquility (Amn & Salamati). They have created the rift in main stream Islam, they have prevented our country from prospering and our nation from becoming a true, patriotic Pakistani nation. They were opposed to the idea of Pakistan to begin with and named it “kafiristan” at the time of creation of our great country. They have never accepted it and are hallucinated by their fantasy of a ‘Fundo Land’ (call it Emirate of Fundistan if you will, or may be a Voodoo State).

  11. Syed Munawar Hassan
    An Introduction…………………

Syed Munawar Hassan is the President of Jamaat-e-Islami of Pakistan.
Syed Munawwar Hasan hails from a distinguished family, based at Delhi before the Partition of the sub-continent. Syed Munawwar Hasan is well versed in English. He is a welcome speaker in the country and abroad. . He heads a number of planning and research bodies within the Jamaat.

  12. @# 11: “He heads a number of planning and research bodies within the Jamaat.”

You forgotten to mention his specialities:

    (a) Planning: All the terrorist activities / future attacks / the targets.

    (b) Research: On application of all destructive materials for maximum havoc they can cause / The most horrible and effective turture techniques available as well as development of such tactics.

  13. @ Aftab S. Alam, Johann

    Dear Sir,

In my opinion JI was the hardcore party struggling to reinstate the Judges of Supreme court in Pakistan.. and Alhmadulillah Chief Justice have taken charge….. i would suggest we should provide any sort of evidence and should go straight to court against each and every criminal individual and group include JI as well……but if u haven’t any evidence then please don’t blame any one with out any evidence… its not a healthy sign….

JI never oppose the creation of Pakistan…. As Faiz Ahmed Faiz (Famous Poet) once said:

یہ توپا کستان کے بعد انکشا ف کیا گیا ہے کہ وہ پاکستان کے مخا لف تھے ورنہ پا کستان بننے سےقبل تو مسلم لیگ کے ورکر مولانا مودودی کی تحریروں کو پاکستان کے حق میں اور کا نگریس ے مقا بلے کے لیئے استعما کرتے تھے۔

    Let me update you guys…

Maulana Maudodi was invited from Hyderabad to Pathan-kot by Allama Iqbal to establish an institution, based on Islamic teachings…… Syed Maudodi was invited to address on Radio Pakistan by Quid e Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah and he made several speeches… anyone can get these speeches from radio pakistan……

In Bangladesh formerly known East Pakistan, the Bengali workers of JI fought against the invasion of Indian regular army along with Pakistan army…… do you think it was wrong?
What you would do if you face the same situation in present in Pakistan? you wont establish your own Al-badr against any invasion?

Strange for me….. Ayub Khan a military dictator is being criticized for the act that he did’t punish a civilian group for their activities………….how much democratic thoughts you have………. very sad…

We need to be more Democratic…..Practical and Clear about the facts……………..

  14. Sami Ullah Khan: Following are few lines written on this issue of JI etc and Mr Maudoodi, it is extracted from a comment here on TPS in August 2008 in response to a certain Mr Waqas a fake claiment to membership of Punjab Assembly also a jamatia or sorts. See, if it might help you understand the JI and its position and its latent agenda about Pakistan. Here it follows:

Are you familiar with the slogan “NaPakistan” ? Do you know, who coined it? It was Maulana Maudoodi the “grand godfather” of JIP - and do you know that all those youngsters who are not in the business of gangsterism and terrorism (on the behest of your political party in the name of Islam!) in the educational institutions of Pakistan know this fact (their fathers and grand fathers are still around and have never forgiven your party for this insult to PAKISTAN). Sir, are you aware of the fact that the maulvis of the time called our great and the only leader (The Quid-e-Azam), do you know what the maulvis called our Quaid-e-Azam? They called him - “Kafir-e-Azam”.

Waqas Sahib, people are not as stupid as you all assume and people do not forget or forgive such insults to Pakistan or Quaid-e-Azam. Pakistan is not and never was “NaPakistan” as Maudoodi called nor Quaid-e-Azam was “Kafir-e-Azam” as other maulvis declared him to be.

  15. Guys! We really need to know more about JAMAT’s system. I am not a member of Jamat but I gone thru literature and the structure of JI at some extend. Therefore I am surprised by reading these comments that..taking JI like other Individual led parties. I believe there wud be no structural difference between Qazi’s JI and Munwar JI..because its history shows the continuty of policies and dominancy of the institutions (like Majlis Shura and Amla) on the individuals ideas & intentions.

Please stop portraying individuals like Khurram Murad Marhoom as creator of Pasban..or Qazi as one-man-show. Even a commenter has not left Molana Modoodi (RA) by accusing him as traitor of Pak & Jinnah.
Anyway every1 has right to say what he want but shud be in logical way…

  16. Mr. Aftab,

Again i am requesting you…. Sir please produced any sort of proof………..you are just in blame game… i have no affiliation with JI but what is the difference between you and me…. i have a deep study regarding the issue, but i guess your source of information is just nothing than a blog or net forum……..where one can hardly find any original thought…………

You can concern any scholar in Pakistan i would be thankful if anyone can prove that JI was against of creation of Pakistan………………. in fact Syed Maudodi was not satisfied with the team of Quid e Azam, and a famous quotation is referred to Mr. Jinnah that once he called the Muslim League leadership as KHOTAI SIKKAI…

Let me update you again Moudodi never called Mr. Jinnah as Kafir e Azam, but what i know this credit goes to Majlis e Ahrar………

Once again be humble and polite when you come to any debate………….. don’t lose your temper… it shows that there is something your personal problem with JI……..other wise if JI is not that good than other Parties, in the same manner i m sure JI is not that bad more than others………so why only JI…….? but one credit goes to JI which is the democratic culture with in JI…….and JI is the only party which hold this honour,,,,,, MR. Aftab please may i know from you any example of it???? I challenge you………….. you cant…………… never and ever……………………..readers will decide who is right…. so try to develop the habit of reading……..unfortunately here on blogs most of us have no ground for any debate or any ability to produce any genuine thought…….

    @ Mr. Zulqarnain,

Sir…..I do agree with you….. what i mentioned here before was just that…… Mr. Khurram Murad brought the idea into being of Pasban. definitely Shura is the superior forum to plan and approve the idea..So i never said that Khurram Murad or anyone else had the authority in JI to decide the things…….even this right was never given to Syed Maudodi…………………….

  17. Samiullah Khan Sahib, it is fine with me, you may or may not be their supporter, member whatever, do what you like. As far as I am concerned, they all and their kind may go where their ‘godfather’ has gone - to hell!

  18. JAMAT e ISLAMI really sets an example for all(repeat all) the political parties who talk of democracy to atleast first have democracy within their parties first.
    welldone… Jamat e islami.
Pakistan is proud to have a party along with tahreek e insaf who is not involved in any kind of corruption and have its own stong way of accountability.
    welldone again..
    Keep it up Munawar.

  19. Whoever or whatever one say about this party but it is written on history pages that it was always this party who has given concrete foundation to our dictators from where they started their dictatorial rules with all legitimate powers granted to them by this jammat. Now they are kicked out from the good books of international forces and JUI f and mqm are swapping them in national politics to provide strong support to military dictators in coming future.

  20. @ Nazia….

Name the single person or party in Pakistan who never been in support of army or supported by army?
