Still Time For Musharaf

By Dr. Hassan Isfahani • Mar 26th, 2008 • Category: Politics • 39 Comments • Email This Post Email This Post

I still wish that someone put some sense in General (r) Pervez Musharraf ans he quits now, because there still is time when he could bolt with some semblance of respect and regard. The more time he spends in the office the more insult will be hurled towards him.

The way Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gillani has ordered the release of the incarcerated judges in the clear violation of Musharrafian Code and the fact that both Asif Ali Zardari the head of PPP and the Mian Nawaz Sharif the head of PML-N were conspicuously absent from the oath-taking ceremony of Prime Minister tells how much unwanted Musharraf has become for the parliament.

Is there no one in the Army House to tell him the truth? Is there no one in the President House to show him the mirror? For him, things are not that difficult, he should say sorry and just go quietly. Ok, do not say sorry, just go quietly. Ok Don’t go quietly. Go however you want, but GO.

  1. At least give credit to your source - “The last whimper” By Kamran Shafi (Another chronic Musharraf basher!) in DAWN (Tuesday 25), otherwise you are just following the tradition started by all hose not so great beacons of knowledge at the PU. Guess you know that I am talking about all those plagiarists The former teachers of Punjab University, Fazl-i-Azeem, Rashid Ahmed, Sohail Afzal Tahir, M. Alam Saeed and Maqsood Ahmad, have been forced into retirement. I ask why? Why retirement - they must be fired without honours. Sending on retirement would mean they keep all their entitlements, it is not fair. They are guilty of plagiarism, that equals THEFT! They are thieves and must be treated accordingly.Another professor, Dr Mian Aftab Ahmad,of the PU is dismissed reported in DAWN of March 18. Crime as usual PLAGIARISM. With this speed soon PU would stand for PU!

  2. President Pervez Mushrraf is the President of Pakistan till such time that you can constittuitonally (if thats what Democracy is all about) replace him.…. and it is disgusting to see such comments on blogs and also rude remarks being aired by the Media and by some of our leaders specially the N league . It is heartening to see that the PPP Leaders are much more balanced… I think we owe some decency and courtesy to our President .. When will me mature enought to make a change gracefully instead of mud slinging .. enough is enough .. Media should also stop ‘BREAKING THE NEWS” and stop creating rifts in the system ….for God sake let us move on … The New PM is determined to take the coutnry forward by there are forces who are more intrested in revenge and vandetta …

  3. And one more thing - Prime Minister - Yusuf Raza Gillani - who himself gave due respect to President Pervez Mushrraf by calling him a part of Parliament at the Oath taking ceremony. ….
the fact that those guyes were absent from the oath-taking ceremony - tells how sincere they are to the Democratic Process…..There is still time for Pakistan …. if only we give it a chance …

  4. Aftab: With all due respect you need to learn what plagiarism is. I read the column of Mr. Shafi after your mention, and yes he discusses what I discuss and we both seems to be of the view that its time Musharraf should go now, and so is the view of millions of voters who showed their intent on 18th Feb. In your love for Musharraf, please be fair at least.

  5. Yeah Aftab should tone down a little. There is no copy/paste here of Kamran Shafi and Dr. Hassan. I have compared it verbatim. Both are Musharraf Basher, and they both seem ill at ease with him :) ans that is what is irking Aftab. He seems to be the true lover of Mush.

  6. It really amazes me as to see that few dozen people in Pakistan (including Chaudharies of Gujrat) still support Musharraf. You spoke my words Mr. Isfahani. Allah Bless You.

  7. Suddenly I get the feeling that it is the learned elite of this country that is taking Pakistan down - by refusing to accept anything Gracefully. It is long debate … how or who were the millions that voted…. But I still say ..there is Still time for Pakistan … only if our learned community instead of bashing got down to educating …. Gor God Sake ….

  8. … Doctors, Professors, Media Experts, Political Leaders …. for God Sake .. give the 16 Crore Awam a chance to breath with ease and … solve their problems instead of what you are doing .. day and day out … Let a new ray of Hope Shine by moving forward …

  9. Few people around us are still unable to make sense that how Musharraf got so weak in just one year…. March 9 2007 to date. These are those people who are raising slogans of Musharaff is Constitutional Presindent regard less of their old stupid stance that ‘We will make Musharraf as President, 10 times with Uniform” Hahaha. They should raise same voice or should at least stick to one point. Kabbhi Uniform, kabhi constitutional saddar, kabhi general…aur Kabhi Wardi Meri Khall Hai.

This so called Constitutional President has undermine same Constitution more than tens of time to reach this status. I know its just compromising status for him because he was believing that he will remain in KHALL (Uniform) till his death. But who can fight with Allah’s plans. I salute Majority of Pakisatni Nation that due to their struggle, we are feeling comfortable about our future. Long Live Pakistan.

  10. Dr Hassan Isfahani:

Keep spreading awareness in society. Well done.

  11. I am highly perturbed at the comment of Mohammad Khan. Does he really think that only the elite is against Musharraf? Who is elite? This establishment, top army brass is the acutal elite. And to whom they support? Musharraf. Because he represents the forces of Full Stop.

Wake Up. This is a changing Pakistan, and we are no longer cajoled enough to support dictators, no matter what. Elite comprises of just few thousands of people in Pakistan, while those who voted on 18th February comprises of millions.

    Yeah, Go Musharraf Go.

  12. Nai Subah hai anay wali,
    Aman, Taraqi aur Khushali

  13. There is nothing personal - I support nobody - I am against nobody - I am only for the New Seeds of Democracy which are about to take roots. Please try to understand - at this time President Musharraf represents the Federation of Pakistan and any disrespect for him is a disgrace for us Pakistanis. We call ourselves Civil Society .. let us then behave like one …. There is still time for Pakistan …

  14. Doctor Sahib and others - In your hate for Musharraf, please be fair at least … give credit where it is due … and I fail to understand what we are trying to achieve here …. Musharraf or No Musharraf or Go Musharraf … and the BREAKING OF NEWS by the Media … The Ball to Ball Commentaries …..There is still time for Pakistan .. Please give it a Chance …. Let us engage in more fruitfull and constructive discussions ….

  15. As Pakistani Politicians and Elite class can’t reach at one point agenda to build Pakistan as successful country, we can’t agree on one point also. Mr Muhammad Khan, its not my or your fault. We are growing up in spoiled society. I welcomed Mr Musharraf in 1999 but I haven’t felt a change even for a single day. I’m neither relative nor emeny of him. I want to see my Pakistan on running track. Why we are more against him or his last governement because he tookover this country from hands of politicians just to make it ideal country or atleast reach his 7 point agenda. With due sorry, he started doing same things which our politicians did in 1990’s. He freed all those culprits with his williness who accepted to join his party PMLQ. These culprits were same who were part of last government. It wasn’t demand to Pakistani Nation to include them in his government. He did it just for the sake of Int’l media and for raising slogans in his favors.

We were expecting that he will address those Pakistan’s core issues which are still unresolved because Military dictator don’t need any support. He is always strong because of guns and tanks and army also. So why he not addressed those issues. He remained busy in making himself strong in all his tenure. No doubt he did few good works but question is at what cost??? At the cost of high inflation, high service charges of banks, high risk rates for companies, lowest saving rates for poor people savings, high taxation of utility commodities, high project costs, high electric break downs, high gas shortages, high water shortages and high death rate in these years. Every sensible man first calculates opportunity cost before starting any thing. if its feasible then he do it. he didn’t even bothered about it.

We must give him credit that he strengthened his Army (not PAF and Navy) by buying poor people agriculural lands aroung big cities at government rates and then constructing Askari, DHA, Army Officers big big housing schemes for obliging them. He filled Pakistan’s public organizations with Army generals and Brigadiers. Then these Generals made their chain by bringing all retired stuff in these organizations and their relatives. Big examples are NADRA, PTA, PTCL, Public Universities, PIA, Pakistan Steel Mills, Ministries and all regulatory authorites. This retired force became pesticide for country. Who is paying cost of them??? You know better.

These are just examples of his actions which are behind the curtains. No body knows, except who are analyzing him and Army critically. I’m not saying that all other rulers were good. But question is this that if you takeover country and kicks out elected governement by excuse that you are one in whole Pakistan who is sincere and wnat to make country right then why you are doing same things rather worst than before. Our nation haven’t received so many death bodies in thier 50 years, as his policies and rigidity gave us in just 8 years. Whether they are Balochi, Pakhtoon, Jamia Hifza girls, innocent children died due to basant, army personnels died in suicide attacks, police men died in attacks, 6 women died just because road was blocked between RWP (army house) to ISB (President house) because he had to go through it, and thousands of innocent citizens. We must keep their blood also in our mind before giving final verdict. We haven’t at least saw this in 1990’s. We were never so uncertain about our life before as we are today.

If he is so sincere then at least he can facilitate poor people by shifting to President house. why he is still living 31 KM away Army house. and still blocks whole highway for his convoy. Average cost of this convoy and personnels used in his security on 31 KM long route is Rs. 45 million per month. Can he not at least save this for nation by shifting to President House. These are examples that how much he was and he is sincere to us. If you want to see the time required to change system of country then see historical examples of France, UK, Iran, South Korea, Malaysia. their leaders came and changed whole system in few years. Not 8 years and situation is worst than before.

In short, we need change but not through Military ruler. Let this democracy go on. You will find changes. As far Landlords and feudalism in politics is concerned, they will also be excluded in next one decade. Transfer of power is shifting from hands of landlord to business community and professionals. so things are changing worldwide. it will surely change our country’s old system also.

Just pray for good the change in life and attitudes of Pakistanis. Allah Bless Pakistan.

  16. Dear Dr. Isfahani, also with due respects. Of course I have no illusion about a learned person like your good- self knowing the definition of ‘Plagiarism’. However, a cursory look into ‘WIKIPEDIA’ explains it for my benefit : Plagiarism is the practice of claiming or implying original authorship of (or incorporating material from) someone else’s written or creative work, in whole or in part, into one’s own without adequate acknowledgement. Unlike cases of forgery, in which the authenticity of the writing, document, or some other kind of object itself is in question, plagiarism is concerned with the issue of false attribution.

As we see, one does not need to take someone’s work in verbatim (cut and paste or copying) even incorporation of paraphrased version of someone’s ideas demands citation and credit. However, I have no reason to question your integrity and your claim that it’s merely a coincidence that two Musharraf bashers were not only simultaneously thinking even writing alike. I am giving all this explaination to clarify where I am coming from- lets leave this here - I do confess ‘Mea culpa’ and beg for your pardon.

Now, one more point. My disgust is not due to my personal love for Musharraf (which I do have and have no reason to feel bad about!) that try to stand for him; I just respect the highest office in the land, the Presidency. I have no problem, personally, seeing him leave the office either by his resignation or through the impeachment proceedings in the joint session of both the Houses(though I want to see him where he is for next five years with that proverbial ‘Danda’ in his hand to prevent any attempts of thuggery, which all have witnessed in the past and know what our politicians are capable of - they have themselves proved many a times in the past) . I thinking by disgracing our President, we are already starting a wrong tradition and that is hurting the Institution of the Presidency. Of course, it’s your prerogative to choose your method as it remains mine to oppose such cheap and cruel below the belt blows.

It pains me to see that we, all of us, conveniently refer to masses voting against Mr. Musharraf’s regime; lets be honest to ourselves and accept the truth that the masses are hardly in a position to really judge and compare performance of those who have managed to manipulate the public opinion in their favour(an illiterate and uneducated people can easily be manipulated by a well organized disinformation campaign - right?) . Will you disagree with me that we can’t have a national amnesia, it was not even 10 years ago and all and sundry were demanding dismissal of the then party in government. We can’t possibily forget what was going on in the coridors of power. And that’s why I happen to believe that it’s your duty and mine to not let our personal preferences come in the way of telling the truth and provide quality information and groom a better and as our President would say a more “Enlightened Society”.

As far as the Constitution of 1972 is concerned we all know how brutally we have allowed its castration right in its infancy - declartion of emergency on the 3rd day of its enactment. How about the 14th Amendment through which the heavy mandated government of PML(N) (of course “democratically elected” in “fair” and “free” elections) forced our elected representatives to give up their power and their concience with it. Is it democracy? Masses have neither any idea or interest in such chicanery and acts of knavery. Masses don’t express themselves because we have, as society, failed to educate them.

    Respects.

  17. Just a few words - this is just the point I wanted to make … no government Military or Civil wants to educate the people … Just wait and see what this Democratically Elected Government has in store for the Awam … that is if they get the time from personal agenda … God save Pakistan .. Aameen …

In these Blogs - instead of giving to the point views and suggestion for a Better Pakistan - we are at each others throats with long personally attacking sermons .. (nobody bothers to read them anyway) .

  18. Mohammed Khan Saheb, you are absolutely right (nobody bothers to read them anyway). It is true and it’s sad. Let me give you an example, two actually! if I may.

One - couple of weeks ago I was among couple of people of mixed nationalities. During an informal (even friendly!) discussion I mentioned something that Prof. Amartya Sen wrote in his book ‘The Argumentative Indian’. It just so happend that a Pakistani retorted, “who has time to read BOOKS and “woh bhi” written by a Hindu”(his tone and style was extremely accusatory) . An american knew about Prof. Sen and most of his work. The third person who is of Indian background appeared genuinely sorry (for himself) that he somehow had not read this book so far and was really interested.

Two - About a year back, I decided to start (on my own small personal way) a campaign to bring awareness about importance of trees. Who would be better lot to start with than (in my opinion) well educated people. I collected some addresses of IBA graduates, thinking that they are not only educated but also reasonably better placed. I sent about 650 letters with an article (recent) written by Mr. Ardeshir Cowasjee on this issue and a short article about an individual who alone all by himself created a whole forest. “My request was simple it said - Please, plant a tree or two or just help someone plant a tree or two.” I got 6 responses! Three of them called me names and told me that they are not interested “even in reading” such nonsense. Two asked if I was an old friend who they somehow lost track of. One, just one person was interested but felt that this whole “PROJECT” needs an organizational set up etc. etc. I requested him to just plant one tree and tell his friends and neighbors etc. to do so if they liked. HE TOLD ME HE WILL - I wonder if he did. Recently I inquired how the tree was doing without a response.

Now, this is the prevailing attitude among us about “Reading” or anything of any social value.

I hope that you did bother to read the above anyway!
Please, do enlighten me with your views on this.

    Respects.

  19. MY message was :

    PLANT A TREE OR TWO!
Someone, wise enough, said that a person starts discovering meaning of human life when he/she decides to plant a shade tree under which he won’t ever sit. Anyone who plants a tree loves someone other than oneself, and the best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago – the second best time is now. Please, plant a tree or two now or help someone plant one. You can try to convince people that best way to remember friends and loved ones is to plant a tree in their name. A tree planted in the name of even those loved ones who are not there any more will make their memories eternal.
Know and tell others that: TREES, provide shade, beautify our surroundings, absorb carbon dioxide, supply oxygen, help the environment, conserve water, reduce soil erosion, give wildlife a home, decrease energy use, increase property value, lessen noise pollution, lower air temperature, add character to neighborhood, and give the individual a sense of peace and tranquility. So, lets plant a TREE or two
