Something’s Amiss

By Adnan Farooqui • Aug 9th, 2009 • Category: Politics, Worth A Second Look • 25 Comments

“Something’s Amiss” as the famous detective Sherlock Holmes would have retorted would he have been presented the case of the peaceful community of lawyers turning into brutes.

The events that have happened over the past few weeks need no explanation. Every child in this beloved country of ours has witnessed the lawyers getting out of hand and literally turning into brutes, frankly this is something one could not expect out of a highly educated and sensible fraternity.

Keeping the history aside, because we know of the scuffles that broke out during the lawyers movement, although it is known that it was the police who started harassing these custodians of law while they wished to lead their movement to a peaceful victory, now of course, both sides of the picture should be reviewed before jumping to any conclusions and pointing fingers at one another.

We know and we have seen the footage of the Chief Justice of Pakistan being manhandled by policemen, a person of his stature certainly has dignity and that certain incident is very sad indeed. We know that his counsel, Aitzaz Ahsan, also a prominent figure in the lawyers movement, was taken into custody from somewhere on the Motorway, and was exposed to literally freezing temperatures with no protection whatsoever by policemen.

Now if today, lawyers manhandle an ASI, of which I do not approve of, why does the media call for cancellation of their licenses, why don’t they call for those policemen to be dismissed from their duties who handled the most senior man of the judiciary like an animal?

I have to say that yes, the lawyers who manhandled the ASI should be brought to justice, as no one should be allowed to take the law in their own hands. No matter what walk of life he belongs to or whatever might his profession be.

While the movement for the restoration of judiciary was going on in the country, there were some reports from ;lawyers saying that they did not recognize some people in their gatherings who were dressed as lawyers and who were resorting to rioting while the whole movement was supposed to be peaceful. Senior analysts saw this as an attempt to sabotage the movement which was gradually getting much praise from the people of the country, and this was also seen as an attempt by the government to thwart the efforts of the lawyers for a free judiciary, and come to think of it, it actually feels like it was true.

Keeping the same scenario in mind, looking at the present situation where in one week, reports of manhandling of three men, one policeman and two reporters, have came forward, in all cases, the lawyers were seen carrying out these acts so the point of false accusations can be left out.

Has that same group of people returned to now tarnish the popular image of lawyers in front of the country? Or is it really that the lawyers are now considering themselves above the law?

  1. That doesn’t matter whether they are fake or real , they have caught in camera and action have been started.they should be punished as per state law and no one is allowed to follow the code of terror and horror. All heads of lawyers and political parties have started collecting evidences and they must be punished.
We cant afford any other terror and horror culture after Karachi where now after 15 years atlaf dada is realizing that how important is our CJP for giving justice to them.

  2. These criminal lawyers must be brought to justice. Just because they’ve been at the front-lines of the ‘justice movement’ doesn’t give them a license to take law into their own hands. President Musharraf did the right thing to keep them at bay, by ordering a crackdown on these criminals. Its high time that the judiciary popular for taking Suo Moto actions takes notice of the virulent activities of these thug lawyers!

  3. I also think it doesn’t matter how they clean the mess they created, to begin with, and we should not give it more importance than it deserves. It is just gang wars - let them take care of each other. Just watch patiently - they will do the real job on themselves. Frankly I consider this whole episode the murkiest of all in our history and I don’t want any government agencies being part of this mafia struggle at all otherwise they will turn around and give it a different colour. Just sit back let them finish themselves off, just like what the terrorists are busy doing where ever they are - who is shedding a drop of tear if one of them does it to other.

  4. Justice should be followed in its true essence. No body is above the law. I totally agree that the involved lawyers must by punished as per law and make an example for the future. Really if people will see justice then our confidence will resume on government and its institutions. I know giving justice is the most difficult thing on this earth but we have to support it without if and but.

  5. This is interesting to see the leaders and followers of terror and horror are giving us lectures of crack down on criminals, mannerism, patience, suo motto actions. This is good to see on worst matters of law and order in Karachi all become summun bukman(deaf and dumb) like sheep and on others matters start roaring like lion of telephone.

  6. No one giving anyone any lectures; lecture are given to people who have the brains. What more can you expect from some plain & simple minded than ’sheep’ & ‘lions’ - after all for simple people these are symbols of strength. Remember that poor sick over fed grown up child who wishes to be a ‘tiger’ but consents like a bitch (you know when) - and still is innocent like a goat - SC says so!

Can you shift your focus from”worst matters of law and order in Karachi” and tell us what happened in gojra and who did it?

  8. @5 I think Aftab Bhai has responded well. However I may like to add a few words here.

The law and order situation in Karachi never deteriorated to the extent that ‘lawyers thugs’ start terrorizing judges and law enforcement officials. These ‘justice movement’ of thug lawyers was utterly rejected by the people of Karachi and this is the prime reason that they don’t dare to indulge in criminal activity there as they know that the people may lynch them!

Talking of shifting focus, well, let’s turn the focus onto the exigent events of Gojra. Tell us what happened in Gojra. Who did it? Wasn’t you PML MPA the one who instigated violence against our fellow countrymen? Why didn’t the Punjab government prevent it ? Was it because it was their own MP who led the riots? Please please enlighten us on the matter!

  9. @7
You think that gojra and karachi has same level of law and order situation see the difference of actions taken by state in a deprived area of Punjab for lower class minority. What ever negligence was made there at least all govt departments showed their actions, concern and trying to catch the culprits.
Is it same happened in Karachi any time???
All see live coverage of crime scenes in karachi and all is quite in govt department except condemnation calls with lot of sympathetic messages for target victims from UK office and heads of law enforcing agencies.
    for your refreshment only(dawn Aug 8 2009)
An anti-terrorism court judge sent 61 accused of the Gojra incident on judicial remand and granted 14 days physical remand of six others here on Friday. The Gojra Sadar police produced 48 accused in the court and sought physical remand of six for 20 days for seizure of weapons and looted belongings of Christians. However, the court granted 14 days remand and sent 42 accused on judicial remand.

The police are investigating the incident of Korian village in which scores of houses were set on fire by a mob on July 30 when they were informed that a few Christians had desecrated the Holy Quran. Gojra police produced 19 accused nominated in the supplementary statement. The police are still clueless about the accused named in the FIR who torched Christian’s homes in Gojra city on Saturday. Resultantly, seven people were burnt alive.

Meanwhile, some PML-N leaders of Gojra have condemned the arrests saying that those who have been implicated in the case (including politicians) are actually ‘peacemakers’ who tried to convince the Muslims to avoid the attack on Christians. At a press conference in Toba Tek Singh on Friday, they said that who instigated the people against Christians were enjoying immunity. The nominated accused in the FIR include politicians Malik Qadeer Awan, a PML-N city president and Jamaat-i-Islami (Gojra) leader Rehmatullah Arshad, who remained busy in making announcements in mosques to urge the citizens not to let loose their ire against Christians. They alleged that Awan had been made an accused in the FIR on the pressure of a former MNA of Gojra.

They said when the desecration of the Holy Quran took place at Chak 95-JB, the police arrested chief suspect Talib Masih but he was later released on the pressure of the MNA. The public got provoked on seeing Talib roaming around in the village and torched more than 100 houses, they said. Another reason that fanned the flame of Gojra violence was the shortage of policemen due to which Christians shot at and injured 13 Muslims (who are still under treatment), provoking the majority to retaliate. They demanded immediate withdrawal of a case against Qadeer Awan. Meanwhile, religious scholars hit out at the Gojra police for arresting hundreds of Muslims on the charges of involvement in Gojra violence. They took Friday sermons as an opportunity to vent their feelings, accusing the police of abusing power and trampling the sanctity of households during raids. They said the police had taken possession of hundreds of mobile phone sets and licenced arms during raids and detained scores of people at unknown places, inflicting physical and mental scars on them. They demanded immediate arrest of those who desecrated the Quran. The civil society in Gojra and Toba Tek Singh tehsils has planned to organize a solidarity conference to promote peace and harmony on Saturday (today) at Gojra bar room.

INQUIRY: Justice Iqbal Hameedur Rehman of the Lahore High Court recorded statements of 20 Christians on the second day of proceedings in the additional district and sessions judge’s court.

SECTION 144: District Nazim Chaudhry Abdul Sattar on Friday imposed Section 144 all over the district, barring assembly of five or more persons at a place. The order will remain operative till further instructions.

  10. @9 We all know what happened in Gojra. Your Noon League government is the one responsible for this massacre. Copying bits from here and there…..well it won’t help!

Let’s see if justice is done and the PML-N is punished!

  11. We dont need help of law breakers or terrorists group running the karachi affairs as laws of jungles on the following basis.
-Shoot your opponents( no mess no fuss)
-follow the order from UK office running by absconders of state and intelligence agencies.
-through out oppos and abus CJP or opponents of dictators and then start sending love letters to him instead of giving -charge sheet to his representatives in assemblies for last 15years.
Nothing would help you people who are terror and horror blind
I am just showing you the right steps toward giving them justice to even poor class of society is being done in remote punjab area.
but do you dare to tell me who is responsible of 800 target killings in last six months of karachi
You people have always gastric problems on other’s issues without seeing the darkness in your own house.
Give justice and sense of security to your people in karachi
sorry sorry what a stupid request I made to you, you people cant give security clearance to your hero of UK to show him development of Venice of East, our karachi the city of lights(until sun remain risen)
    for last 18 years
so how can you do this unimaginable desire of common person like me.
again lot of apologizes on this absurd request
This report is just showing you that how state personals and its departments should react to give concept of sense of security to its people nothing more than it as I know this is out of course procedure for you people.

  12. @11
Your explanations on the Gojra massacre are as terribly convoluted, I’m afraid. Prevaricating in defence of Noon League, on this serious issue won’t help as, the details keep on emerging, thanks to free media. It was not just a failure on part of your NOON league government to prevent the carnage, but also there’s said to be substantial evidence of direct involvement of one of PML Noon’s MPAs in unleashing blatant violence against a minority community. Such a shame. While at the same time, your justice movement “ghunda” lawyers have found a new pastime of terrorizing journalists, civil judges, even law enforcement officials and all this is happening under the nose of your “na-ahl” (inept) CM Shahbaz Sharif.

Punjab was better off under Governor’s rule!

  13. Carefully see by using your longsighted glasses that it was not my explanation it is news and events generated in dawn newspaper. As it explicitly covers all actions so I presented to you for your General knowledge that is not coming out of governor house ,
N league is the most active and reactive party at this moment as all others are busy in hanky panky in govt deals.
Any how its good to see that dr asim ultimately decided to give up after being targeted of worst criticism on fuel price issues from general public.I hope he has decided this act as voice of his conscience that is lacking in all advisers and ministers.Sherry and raza rabbani were also in this queue.
Give him some more courage so he can point out what was actually done under his ministry that made him to quit.

  14. @11
“I am just showing you the right steps toward giving them justice to even poor class of society is being done in remote punjab area.”

    Justice?

Oh yeah its your form of justice. Primitive breed of beasts in dark skins (lawyers) let loose on the streets of Lahore to terrorize the general public and your noon league adminsitration orders no arrests even as the culprits are caught on tape. And traitor Aitzaz Ahsan calls it a conspiracy of PCO judges….Lol..is he deliberately being obtuse here or does he really mean it? What about thief Shumaila Rana case? What about the rapist MPA Munawar? We haven’t seen any justice done.

Where really is Noon’s good governance? PPP spokeswoman Fouzia Wahab disclosed yesterday how the noon league has squandered millions of rupees on the fictitious ‘Food Stamp” programme. And they call it good governance.

Your province deserves to be under Governor’s Rule…..period!

  15. PML-N is a virus!

  16. Noon league’s is a government of gangsters and prostitutes!

  17. If your eyesight is weak, your memory is lost and couldnt read updates news then who can help you.Just try to come out of maize of blog life and see the ground realities. All your highlighted cases have been proceeded under the state laws and nobody ignored them whether it is media or political party or law enforcing agency.
If shumaila is keep of zara’s husband then along with her, zara’s husband would also be caught who often did such acts to please his girl friend.
Rapist shut his mouth after receiving heavy money from munawar shaibs accounts.
Chooran ko par gay moor so like our respectable lady who had leaked our nuclear smuggling issue, this woman also cashed his love affairs to our MPA who had kept him in waiting list of wife for many years. So beware of revenge of woman as after that dhobi ka kutha na ghar ka na ghat ka rehata hay.
Disclosure of fauzia whaib on N league oh what a high profile discovery of secret from fuzia
if you rely on such goof sources then sorry dont waste my time to dig into your sunken brain.
so excuse me of your good intelligence source and let us to enjoy our system of governance,

  18. Just one question: Why so many rapists, cheaters, thieves, hate mongers, gangsters of all sort in only Noon League? Why haven’t we ever heard of such breed, forming such great proportion of any other party?

    Please think over it!

  19. and if this were not enough, the ‘fourth foot of Noon-league’, laard Nazir is also a convicted criminal!

  20. You are asking me whose ideal leader had almost 80 deadly cases when he left Pakistan.
if people clean wash them through NRO black deals then what is need of this merry go round like useless discussion.
why babar ghori avoided his inquiry in ship scandal in which zardari had to intervene for shutting the mouth of nabeel gabbol.
Why audit of local govt of karachi was rejected by mqm and still not a single audit was allowed at the end of tenure of this LG.
Why dr asim is quietly resigned on big scams of privatization of some gas fields and transfer of money from petroleum money to private funds instead of giving them to IPPs for relieving people of Pakistan from worst kind of load shedding in 62 years history of Pakistan.
