Shameful Scandal

The Pakistani consulate in Houston had been involved in issuing a passport to a wanted criminal, who was not even of Pakistani origin, is scandalous to say the least. Investigations into the escape of the felon by the US FBI uncovered a scam in which the former consul general at the mission was engaged in giving out passports in exchange for large sums paid as bribes. The diplomat is today serving as ambassador in another country. An assistant is under investigation by NAB, after being sent back to Pakistan.

The scam once more exposes corruption at Pakistani missions in other countries. Reports of a similar nature have surfaced in the past. It is important that these practices, which bring a bad name to the country, be sternly dealt with. In the first place, the senior diplomat stated to be involved in the affair, who had indeed authorized an assistant to sign passports, must also be brought to book.

In many cases, corruption takes places only with the connivance of high-ranking officials. Yet, too often, they escape punishment, while minions are made scapegoats. This must not happen in this case too, and Pakistan must set an example that can deter others by proving it is determined to go after those who engage in such malpractice without compromise and without an attempt at a cover-up.
