Sawara and Wani : Forced Marriages for Murder
By Amna Gilani • Apr 15th, 2008 • Category: Misc, Worth A Second Look • (3,449 views) • 3 CommentsThere are enough problems in our society like poverty, unemployment, load-shedding of gas and electricity, food shortage, medicine shortage, law and order and political restiveness, that social problems like Sawara and Wani don’t get much of a spotlight and just act as an interesting topic for the drama serials or an excuse for the NGOs to entice more aid from the donors.
In the rural (sometimes in the urban) societies of Pakistani areas, centuries old customs like Sawara and Wanni are the forced marriage of girls to resolve conflict generated through murders. The elders of the girls are of the opinion that sawara and wanni prevent further bloodshed and are best for conflict resolution. This tribal tradition makes the life of thousands of girls a living hell every year.
Because of half-hearted efforts of government and ostentatious efforts of NGOs, this inhuman act is going on openly in our areas with all the false pride.

Hi,
Is it a tribal custom? Does it have no sanctity in Islam? Why the learned scholars in Islam not protesting against it? They jump when inheritance and maintenance is given to widows or divorced.

Islamic scholars have not enough time for these kind of matters. The old custom of burying your daughters alive is still there. It has only changed its shape.

I believe the Custom of Sawara and Wani are not based on any Islamic teachings. These are customs inherited by tribes and are used and misused to achieve political aims.
Our Islamic scholars (not all) are too busy in politics or have very low wisdom levels to have a clear understanding of the issue,
Islam is a Religion, If is appled in its true spirit will bring peace, harmony, human rights or in the nutshell whatever is good for a Human conducting his or her life.
In Pakistan ,most of the people generaly do no respect women and subdue them werever they can, The men provide only lip service and apply double standards when it comestotheirown households.
I thing an Average Pakistani does not know what Freedom is ,thus will never apply the same in their own life.
Women have been made too Inspire the Men in the Form of a Mother, sister, wife and daughter. It is sad that we cannot get taht emotion,
