Rights of the Disabled

United nations convention on the rights of Persons with disabilities was adopted on December 13, 2006. It was opened for signature on march 30, 2007. An estimated 80% of people with disabilities live in developing countries and there is significant correlation between poverty and disability.

As of 15th may 2008, the convention had won 129 signatures and 26 ratifications and the optional protocol had 71 signatures and 16 ratifications. In SAARC , it is NOT India which is showing the lead but BANGLADESH. It has ratified both the convention and the additional protocol. India ratified the convention on October 2007 but yet to ratify the optional protocol.

Pakistan is way behind in the cause of disabled as we in south Asia always considered the disabled as a burden to be looked after but without any rights. It is the DUTY OF EDUCATED PEOPLE who have disabled in the family to move forward and demand for the rights of the disabled. In India we are fighting still for the psycho social disabled (disabled due to mental illness and not retarded) as the bureaucratic mindset still lives on the Indian lunacy act of 1912.

There are plenty of lawyers in this forum fighting for the 60 odd justices and their rights. Hope they also look at the RIGHTS OF THE DISABLED IN THEIR COUNTRY who form 10% of the nations population..
