PTCL Workers Woes and Etisalat
By Fatima Tassaduq • Jul 17th, 2008 • Category: Politics • (3,481 views) • 4 CommentsEtisalat has 40 per cent share and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has got 60 per cent share in the Pakistan Telecommunication Company Ltd (PTCL), which has been privatized and Etisalat is now running the management of the PTCL, and since the time of privatization, the plight of PTCL has gone rock bottom, and both customers and the employees are unhappy about the management.
Right now PTCL workers in protest mode, and they are raising hell from Karachi to Khyber and have clashed with the security forces at multiple places during their rallies. They are protesting against the Unified Pay Scale (UPS) by terming it as an axe over their already limited salaries. With July 21 set as the deadline, employees are being forced to sign documents giving the management the right to freeze their employment benefits at June 30, 2008 levels even if they have 10 years or more left to serve the organisation.
The employers of PTCL are also showing their ire about the Voluntary Separation Scheme (VSS) introduced by Etisalat which has hurted the employers and organization more than it has benefited, and most of the technical staff has left the company, and there is dearth of the technical capability in the PTCL now.
Though the efficiency of the PTCL has never been exemplary and they have also contributed their share in adding to the miseries of the people, and also their staff and officers never treat the common people with respect, even then PTA should look into the matter and they should resolve the issue, and they must not let anybody disrupt the telecommunication services in the country.

Privatization without planning results in same manner. Neither Etisalat is happy on buying this PTCL nor employees are happy on this Privatization. The man who is happy, is sitting in USA.

Age is a factor that continuously wean off the tendency of the human to react and respond in need of requirement.
Education uplifts the response in reaction by articulating the backup knowledge.
Exposure prepare for the recommended reaction.
Advancement procures new modes to counter.
Merit assimilates these factors in to separate shining slots so to bring change.
It is this loss of merit that has entered the system thereby sabotaging the entire element including norms and tradition as professionals.
In my opinion, service rules and regulation, need to be reviewed and strict obligatory rules in terms of expulsion should be applied whenever there is a breach of such obligatory acts of professionalism are crossed and sacrificed , with standing operative procedure in terms of laid down legislation to hold the act ,so to be challenged in any court of law .
However high level scrutiny with in the premises of the organization in judicial custody as reinforcement and check need to be the part for such actions.
