Post Election Scenario: Retreat, Surrender or Impeachment

By Farid Masood • Feb 21st, 2008 • Category: Politics, Worth A Second Look • (819 views) • One Response

Nation’s verdict is crystal clear, if we see towards inclination of voters the things begun to clear that there is three categories of polled votes:

1. Anti-Musharraf Vote to PML(N) and PPP
2. Sympathy Vote to PPP
3. Anti-American Vote

If we see towards all above-mentioned categories directly or indirectly are Anti-Musharraf Vote. Therefore, the pressure is building around the President which may force him to retreat from his point of views and compromise what the political parties demand and cooperate with them on their positive and meaningful terms.

Second option is that he surrenders and gives his seat to any suitable civilian, whom the political parties nominate.

Third, and a hard one for the country and for the President that he present himself for impeachment. For impeachment of the President two third majority’s consent in the National Assembly is required, which seems possible at this stage.

Official results are awaited from the Election Commission, which shall endorse the winning candidates status. There are still ambiguities in the electoral process, for example, there are constituencies from where PML-Q candidates won the elections with a small margin and the vote cancelled in those constituencies are more than that. So there are chances of winning anti-Musharaf candidate which may add to the worries of the President.

On the other hand the national and international pressure is building on the President to re-instate the undermined judiciary. Mr Nawaz Sharif, Leader of PML(N) has categorically stated his pre-election stand point to leave no stone un-turned to re-instate judiciary at the position of November 3, 2007 (Pre-Emergency), and leaders of Pakistan People’s Party are supporting this issue at the backend. Both the parties have demanded for the ouster of the President. Demand is tough, and this may start widening chasm between the two parties and the President. And in such a case the future of current elected government is dark.

If it judiciary is re-instated, the case of President’s candidature may re-open and the President may be forced to opt for out without any retreat, surrender or impeachment.

    Imran Says:

We are in still state on what is going to happen. Because PPP’s stance is not clear about judiciary. PML-N is clear but they have to deal with PPP in order to fulfill their promises that they did with the Nation before Elections.
