Pharma Mafia
By The Pakistani Spectator • May 8th, 2007 • Category: Uncategorized • 2 Comments •When we are sick we visit the doctor of our choice, whom we trust because of the medicines he gives provide us relief. Most of the doctors only prescribe the medicines which are available at the pharmacy within the same hospital. If you miss to take medicines from there you may not be able to purchase all medicines from the any other medical store. Why it happens?
This is because doctors are bound to write medicines of those pharma companies which gives him healthy kick-backs. Some forms are mentioned below:
1. Doctors is offered different souvenirs for his clinic and for his personnel use.
2. Clinic of the doctors is renovated by the sales staff of drugs marketing company.
3. Paid mobile connections are provided to the doctors.
4. A doctor working in a medium sized hospital is offered a car or so.
5. A doctors working in a big government / private hospital may be offered foreign family trips to get approval for the supply of medicine.
6. Many other shapes of kick backs.
What I am writing is not a new story, if we view the whole situation these all cost are charged to medicines, which is paid by the patients. In the case of small hospitals, if pharmacy owner and hospital is a different person, the owner of pharmacy pays the rent of the building of the hospital.
Doctor in response has to meet the targets given by the pharma companies. There may be many other shapes of incentives after meeting the targets given.
