Pakistan Election 2008 : A Milestone, Not Destination
By The Pakistani Spectator • Feb 17th, 2008 • Category: Pakistan Vote'08, Politics, Worth A Second Look • One Response •Campaign for the Election 2008 has entered into its final stages, and lasts bid are on offer by all the parties. These elections are a huge turning point in our turbulent history. Though these elections have got immense potential to change the way we used to exist on the map of the world, but in a more realistic and objective way, these elections are just a catalyst in ensuring the better future for Pakistan.
One fact which is as obvious as daylight is that establishment never wanted to hold elections in Pakistan, and the current situation in the country has compelled it to do so, but it’s trying hard to ensure the heart-favorite results for it. Level-playing field hasn’t been offered to all the parties, and the way state machinery is being used by PML-Q, it’s not difficult to see at whose side the hearts of establishment are.
Nonetheless, the credit must be given to the boycotting lawyers and the brave judiciary which forced them to hold elections, no matter how much rigged they are. These elections aren’t going to restore democracy in the country, and these elections are not going to reinstate the deposed judges. These elections wouldn’t result in the termination of crisis which have infested our social lives, and these elections are not simply going to eliminate terrorism from our society.
These elections would determine the future of President General (r) Pervez Musharraf, and these elections are going to facilitate the welcome of true democracy in future. If you closely see the post-election scenario, you would be surprised as how good things look for Pakistan in any case.
If PML-N and PPP wins then it would be a huge step towards the destination of true democracy. If the victor is PML-Q, which is only possible after massive rigging, then the opposition parties, lawyers, media, APDM and nationalists would automatically unite and their struggle would be extremely hard to suppress for anyone, and hence the the process of change will begin.
Now if only the regime shows prudence and don’t fight the inevitable then Pakistan would be saved from chaos and more turbulent times. The sun of change has risen, and it’s only a matter of time that Pakistan Shines.
