Options For General Musharraf
By Sameer Shaharyar • Aug 17th, 2008 • Category: Politics • No Responses •In the fatherland, always the democratic governments come during the brief periods when armed governments decide to take rest. This time a new thing has happened as a democratic government has come, when still there is a dictator present and the democratic governments are bent on ousting that president without any help from the Army.
Army’s role is also very commendable as they have not only refused to help the tinpot dictator in his endevours to stick to the rule for an indefinite period of time, but they also helped in ensuring that dictator doesn’t get the favorite results in the general elections. Army has also ensured that establishment doesn’t play games once again and entice army back into the throes of the power corridors of civilian politics, and the credit wholly goes to the new Army chief General Ashfaq Pervaiz Kayani, who is a professional soldier through and through.
Now General Musharraf has got three options available to him. All of them without any much esteem, but only when of them to assure some sort of safe passage for him. The first one to get impeached by the coalition government and get himself deprived of any benefits and then face charges. The second one to dissolve the assemblies by using 58(2)B, which would result in the new elections after 90 days but that is out of question as Army doesn’t facilitate Musharraf in that. The third and only viable option for Musharraf is to resign and through interlocutors get a safe corridor to the life of namelessness.
