NRO EXPIRES
By Ali Yar Khan • Nov 28th, 2009 • Category: Politics, Worth A Second Look • 9 CommentsMany vultures are giving out final touches to the cases they have prepared with meticulous research, extreme funding and multi-agents support to attack at the President Asif Ali Zardari and his many close companions as NRO amnesty protecting high-ranking politicians, bureaucrats, ambassadors and others expires on 28th Novemeber.
The present regime has the credibility problem. They even got it inherently as they selected their men to rule the Pakistan. From Charter of Democracy (CoD), 17th amendement to the implementation of the commitments, this setup has failed to deliver. Lack of governance, facilitated by the new emerging corruption stories and now with NRO genie out of the bottle, things are very bleak and gloomy for the many in Islamabad.
MQM is the biggest beneficiary after the PPP. In benefitting from NRO, MQM wins when it comes to the quantity and PPP takes lead when it comes to the quality. The recent pouncing of PPP and MQM upon each other is nothing but a lame effort on part of both to divert the attention of people from the real issue of NRO. This is all farce and hogwash and PPP and MQM are in it jointly and they both are hurling mud at each other to muddy the water and to distract the people from the NRO, which they both enjoy and want to protect.
But that is not going to work. Several court petitions are prepared, including cases against Mr Zardari’s right to be president and lawsuits that will test the limits of presidential immunity. One lawsuit will even challenge the president’s mental health ñ another ground for removal from office. Lawyes are also ready to lodge cases against MQM for 12th May massacre and the incident in which allegedly MQM burned some lawyers alive.
Sadly enough, morality is not an issue in this whole insulting saga. MQM calls NRO a black law but in the same breath refuses to surrender the benefits it accrued from it. The pressure upon the co-chairman of PPP and the president of Pakistan and his acolytes is mounting to step down and face the charges in the courts. As NRO expires hundreds of cases will be renewed against President Zardari and his allies including Rehman Malik, interior minister, and the ambassadors to London and Washington.
Nothing can be said about the future of Pakistani politics and the fate of the government but whatever the outcome of Zardari’s latest round of legal troubles and the political crisis they portend, their effect is likely to be a further weakening of his grip on power and a very dark future for the party of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.

I don’t think MQM and PPP are staging any drama. MQM leadership has it’s fingers on pulse of the people and it already took advantage of NRO, hence the ditching saga. Zardari too have cleared some cases when PCO judges were on the helm. He was using Murree declaration and COD to pressurize the PCO judges and cleared some of the cases. Now he is president and it will be very difficult to overturn the immunity the he has. But at the time of his election if he stated anything in his nomination papers, which can help prosecution overturn the immunity will be the main theme. It is worth noting that PPP leaders cry their guts out that Zardari spent years in prisons but they don’t mention the fact that he submitted numerous medical reports to get medical relief from the courts which was also a huge factor in delay.
The essence of Reconciliation or the rudiment which form its nuclease of reality—can be summed up as—- ‘Tauba’; which we know that it is a sincere repentance of ones sins of the past. It means that man was basically the culprit but his or hers repentance may avail them a sigh of relief or chance to float and now onward they need to display a better conduct in the future.
NRO person is as some one who is released on parole or can be said—— is on probation.
But it is certainly not a certificate got issued to use it as his or hers being—– free scot.
Any how let this bubble of NRO bust—and when every body comes to senses —–they will realize that there is no way out—but to repent sincerely.
So the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) beneficiaries list comes out. The media is happy that those persons who enjoyed taking advantage of the NRO have light casted upon them, while the government is trying to push forward the argument of how they have respected the Supreme Court’s judgment and have publicized the list. It seems to be a win-win situation for all parties. But is it really? Calls for the resignation of ministries and portfolios have echoed from all corners. How has this zero-sum game turned into a finger-pointing-name-calling battle?

From this Rs.308 billion around 65% was being utilized for debt servicing. In 1988 Pakistan’s foreign debt was $18 billion, but at the end of 1999 it had accumulated to become $38 billion. The vision and policies helped Pakistan come out of the list of Highly Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) while setting it on path of prosperity, growth and economic reforms. The world financial institutions like the World Bank[51] and IMF[52] and ADB[53] have been praising Pakistan for its reforms, fiscal policies and macro-economic achievements.
