Self-finance: No more in medical colleges.

The recent announcement of Punjab Chief Minister regarding abolition of self-finance scheme for the admission to medical colleges has given hope to hundreds of competent students studying in schools and colleges. The step is taken to ensure that only prospective students get admission to these educational institutions.

The self-finance scheme was depriving a large number of prospective and competent students of admission to government medical colleges because they were unable to afford the hefty tuition and hostel fees. According to Punjab Health Secretary Anwaar A Khan there were around 250 students between the last student admitted on merit and the top student admitted under the self-finance scheme. He said the new policy would allow at least 380 students to get admission to eight public medical colleges of the province on merit. He said the revenue generated through the self-finance scheme was Rs100 million to Rs120 million, which was only peanuts compared to the provincial health budget of Rs15 billion.

The announcement has given hope to students who are studying in other demand driven disciplines like engineering, pharmacy and business management. Students have welcomed the said step and are positive that government will ensure merit based admissions in all disciplines without any discrimination.

According to the Punjab University (PU) website a student seeking admission on self-finance basis has to pay Rs. 250,000 for admission in, any one of, pharmacy, architecture and engineering programme of the university whereas Rs. 200,000 are charged from a student seeking admission in BBA (Hons) in Banking and Finance, Insurance and Risk Management, MBA, BCom and MCom etc under the said scheme. Many other public sector institutes offer admissions on self finance.

It is very much required that government should reduce their non productive expenditures and invest funds in education, health and other welfare sectors to uplift the living standard of whole society. Government should strictly follow merit at every level to ensure equal rights for every body in society.

  1. Good news for students. I hope other provinces will follow the same and will allow competent students to get admission on merit. Pakistan is already facing severe problem of shortage of skilled human resourse and brain drain is creating problem on long run. Atleast poor promising students will remain in Pakistan and it will result positive no country.

  2. Saleem Khan, great! This should be our ultimate demand and ultimate goal. Lets join hands and ask others to come in and support following agenda as you have put forawrd.

It is very much required that government should reduce their non productive expenditures and invest funds in :
    - education,
    - health and other
    - welfare sectors to uplift the living standard of whole society.

Government should strictly follow merit at every level to ensure equal rights for every body in society.”

  3. NWFP not following it, they must also decide in facour of students

  4. selling of education should be stopped at all level, govt should provide opportunity to all students and should all setup career counselling system.

  5. Dear farid bhai,

As I studied in NWFP, I found it more ideal as compared to Punjab Education level. I’m not trying to argue with you but just for the information of others… Peshawar is the only city in Pakistan where main Public Colleges, Universities, professional colleges are at same place. Like Islamia College, Fatima Jinnah Degree College for women, Khyber Medical College, Nursing College, Dental College, Engineering Universities, Peshawar University, Agriculture College, Quaid e Azam Business College and University, College of home economics and Residential area for all their staff and hostels are situated at one place. It looks like one unit. The land was gifted by Sardar Abdul Rub Nishtar but their NWFP used it in right direction. Standard of teaching is far better than Punjab. Student unions are not as strong as works in Punjab University. Just see… Jamat e Islami majority is from NWFP but they are creating problems for Punjab University not for Peshawar University.

No doubt self finance scheme is present in NWFP and should be abolished on priority from whole country.
