Naeem Bhai, over all you are right. If you let me, there’s a point or two on which I wish to differ with you. But, please do not consider this difference as an attempt at proving the points as deficiant. While you are right that we joined the Americans in their campaign against the then USSR in Afghanistan; will you agree that the Russian invasion of Afghanistan had created great anxiety and concern among us, Pakistanis, due to their perceived interest, or suspected, or possible interest to roll down to our coast lines in Balochistan. At the same time, is it not true that this commonality of the American suspicions and our apprehension about the Soviet design was a suitable conincidence and suited us both mutually; so our joinging them was not an act of mere friendship, or kowtowing American intesrests, or our being American Scouts. It was, as we saw it, in our interest to contain and ideally help chase the Soviets out of Afghanistan.
The second point is, in your sarcasm somehow you appear to give an impression as if living peacefully the way other people live their lives in their countries is something to laugh at. I am sure it is meant to be otherway round. Isn’t it?
There can’t be any two opinions that the this Afghanistan and their inspired fundos are a serious threat to our sovereignity and we must crush them now no matter what it costs. We have to whole heartedly resist this and fight with all our might. Pakistan is under siege and we must break it immediately. Afghanistan is a quagmire and the Afghans may it into along with all the other enemies of Pakistan and its people.
Thanks for your comments Aftab sahib! To this extent I agree that Soviet containment was imperative for security of Pakistan. The real issue is “how” that situation was handled by those at the helm of affairs in 1979 till 1988 (Zia & company). The similarity between Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and events of September 11th, 2001 is visible. I agree that had any civilian been in chair at 9/11, he or she would have done the same but the irony of fate is the short-sightedness of Mush, again the reason that HOW the issue was handled. Zia and Mush, both acted like stooges of US at cost of their own rule totally shelving the interests of the state. To perpetuate his (mis)rule has always been the first and last agenda item of any dictator.
The aftermath is extremely threatening to the state of Pakistan. Now Afghanistan problem and the militants have become cancerous for the state.
Genuine leaders do foresee future, ours did not. You will get more answers to your questions after you will read my fresh column, again on foreign policy issues, to be published in Daily Express on Saturday June 28th.
Thanks again for your comment. I do appreciate it.
