Musharraf, Nawaz and Hijacking from Ground
By A Khokar • Apr 24th, 2010 • Category: Politics • 9 CommentsIn the light of the new book published; MUSHARRAF, NAWAZ & HIJACKING FROM THE GROUND by the AminUllah Choudhry, DG Aviation; the man who was at the helm of the affairs of famous hijack case prior to the coup of 12 Oct 1999. He very unequivocally alleges General Musharraf for the hijack. An interview of the author was also telecast by Dunya TV- host Najam Sethi; editor The Daily Times on 21 April 2010.
Earlier on Nawaz Sharif was relieved of any such criminal charges of hijacking as PM what so ever in this case and his punishments as such remitted by the honorable court. He was awarded a clean slate by the court.
All this leaves the common man in the street in illusion that whether —General Pervez Musharraf and his military colleagues—they orchestrated this mellow drama in order to take over the country and come in power…. which they had and remained in charge of this land for long 8 years.
I think that General Pervez Musharraf will have to come forward with suitable reply to all these allegations. This leaves the ball in General Sahib’s court.

MUSHARRAF, NAWAZ & HIJACKING FROM THE GROUND
The Bizarre Story of PK 805 by Aminullah Chaudry
Publication Date: 2010 –Extent: 350 pages
The Book:
Early the same afternoon, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had dismissed Musharraf, away on a visit to Sri Lanka, and replaced him with Gen Ziauddin. When the latter was not allowed to assume command by a section of the army, he turned to Nawaz Sharif for help. The Prime Minister then ordered Aminullah Chaudry to divert PK 805, the flight on which Musharraf was returning home, away from Karachi and preferably out of the country. As the Civil Aviation Ordinance permitted the Prime Minister to divert any commercial flight from its specified route, and the Director General to close down any airport, Aminullah denied the use of Karachi and its designed alternative Nawabshah to PK 805. When the pilot of PK 805 informed the tower that he was running short of fuel, he was cleared to land at Nawabshah. Before he could do this, the army stormed the control tower in Quaid-e-Azam International Airport and order PK 805 to return to Karachi. Despite this, Musharraf, now in the cockpit of PK 805, remained airborne for another thirty eight minutes until he was sure that the army had deposed Nawaz Sharif.
Although only a diversion was ordered, Nawaz Sharif and six others were charged with hijacking PK 805. Working under the shadow of Musharraf’s autocratic regime, the Courts convicted Nawaz Sharif. Amiullah Chaudry was also arrested, kept in solitary confinement, and forced to testify against Sharif.
Having witnessed farcical trial at first hand, Aminullah is one person who can give a firsthand account of a grossly flowed judicial process. He shows how the legal process was distorted and the fundamentals of Aviation Law disregarded.
The Author: Aminullah Chaudry joined the Civil Service of Pakistan in 1967. In 1998, he was appointed Director General, Civil Aviation Authority of Pakistan and in early 1999, Secretary Aviation, and Government of Pakistan. He was serving in these positions at the time of the coup of 12 October 1999, which brought Chief of Army Staff Gen Pervez Musharraf into power.

Exposing Nawaz Sharif’s corruptionThe following is an excellent programme exposing some of the corruption conducted by Nawaz Sharif by the host of DM Digital, Farhan Aslam, who also used to work for ARY Digital a few years ago.
The report has been divided into six segments. I will offer a short summary of the discussion, followed by the clips themselves.
Brief summary
Nawaz Sharif’s only agenda was to make money. In order to achieve this goal, he formed/changed laws and policies for his personal benefit and expanded his business empire by misusing his authority as Prime Minister.
Interestingly enough and ironically, the PPP played a major role in exposing the corruption of Nawaz Sharif and his family. The Jamaat-e-Islami had also levelled a number of corruption allegations upon Nawaz Sharif. As we know, later Sharif and his cronies also played a role in exposing the corruption of Benazir Bhutto and her PPP. In other words, both Sharif and Bhutto have been busy over the years actively accusing each other of committing corruption.
Nawaz Sharif is widely acknowledged to be a highly incompetent person, with a mediocre I.Q. level. The brain behind him was that of his late “Abba Jee” (‘daddy’) – the mastermind and the main decision maker behind the scene.
In order to consolidate and attain more power, N. Sharif attacked every individual and institutions he felt could get in the way challenge his authority. In order to get rid of the then Chief Justice Sajjad Ali Shah, who was despised by Sharif, the later created divisions among the judges to make life difficult for the Chief Justice. A group of judges refused to acknowledge Shah as the Chief Justice and things got so bad that a number of junior judges put hurdles in the way of the Chief Justice in order to make it difficult for him to carry out his duties. Eventually, Sharif ordered his thugs to attack the Supreme Court in order to prevent the Chief Justice from giving a ruling against him.
The police did nothing to stop Sharif’s thugs as they attacked and entered the Supreme Court. The judges inside the building barely managed to escape. The thugs, led by Sajjad Naseem and Mushtaq Tahir, Nawaz Sharif’s political secretaries, entered the court chanting anti-Sajjad slogans and destroyed the furniture.
Next, consider Nawaz Sharif’s relationship with the press and media. Two examples will suffice. On 8th May 1999, Najam Sethi, a prominent journalist of Pakistan, was arrested by the police on the orders of Sharif. Sethi has committed the crime of annoying Nawaz Sharif by writing a critical essay against him. The police broke into Sethi’s house at around 2 am and beat him up in his bedroom in front of his wife, after which he was transported off to a secret location. The police trashed Sethi’s house, broke the furniture and beat him up quite bad. Sethi was only released after a lot of international pressure had built up against Sharif. Sharif also demanded the Jang Group to get rid of all the journalists who were critical of him. To achieve this goal, Sharif and his cronies used a variety of legal and illegal means to pressure the Jang Group into compliance.
There is probably no institution in Pakistan which Nawaz Sharif did not aggressively confront in order make them comply to his wishes. Besides picking on a fight with the President, the Judiciary and the already restricted/limited media, Sharif also decided to have a confrontation with the army, the only viable institution left in Pakistan. Chief of Army Staff, General Jehangir Karamat, and Nawaz Sharif had a conflict over an issue pertaining to the national security council and both entered into a heated discussion, after which Gen. Karamat had to offer his resignation. Jehangir Karamat thus became the first Chief of Army Staff in the history of Pakistan to have left the army in this prematurely in this manner.
One by one all challenges and potential obstacles were removed from the way by Nawaz Sharif. Ghulam Ishaq Khan, Farooq Leghari, Sajjad Ali Shah, and Jehangir Karamat, as well as others, were all removed from the scene by Sharif.
After the removal of Jehangir Karamat, Sharif appointed Pervaiz Musharraf as the Chief of Army Staff. Some analysts at the time said that Sharif made this decision thinking that Pervaiz Musharraf was an Urdu speaker and did not belong to a Punjabi army family, thus very unlikely to be a threat to Sharif!
Things became sour between Sharif and Musharraf during the Kargil episode. Later, once a relative of Sharif was removed from the army by Musharraf, that was the final nail in the coffin. Sharif then decided to take his revenge and replace Gen. Musharraf with a fellow of his liking who would be controllable (the head of the I.S.I. at the time).
Farhan Aslam also comments upon the ill-advised economic decisions of Sharif which made Pakistan’s situation from bad to worse. Moreover, he comments upon the Sharif family’s personal business empire and how it grew exponentially through questionable means.

I am just flabbergasted to know that there are still some people around who support and are willing to go to great lengths to defend this despicable character. By large, this guy looted our country and created mayhem. He attacked every institution within the country, not even sparing the army, and even dreamt of becoming the so-called “Amir ul-Mumineen”!
Listen to any of his recent talks and interviews and all you encounter is the usual waffle, empty rhetoric and emotions. This is all he has to misled the masses and the sad part is that there are people around who find his rubbish convincing!
If you vote and support this guy, then you deserve to be looted by him since you are worse than him. WAKE UP!

Why has the commando run away?
I understand he has music parties arranged for him wherever he goes and likes to sing with the performer.
Of course he staged the hijacking in collusion with military’s top brass.
If Nawaz Sharif was smart he should have sent MUSHI to Washington.
The important point is that Military dictator Musharraf had complete control of Pakistan from Oct 1999 through February 2008.
The fact is that he had a good enlightened run, enjoyed himself through fancy foreign trips and a book launching, while nothing concrete was done to control extremism and improve the lives of average Pakistanis.
He left us a Pakistan where:
* The Taliban and extremists are out of control
* Not single power plant was set up to support the DHA’s and Bharias and increasing population.
* NRO (National Rape Ordinance) instituted by Musharraf to save his presidency has cost Pakistan billions and has brought back looters with their loot intact.
* After all this drama, the commando runs away to London to a life of fun and travel.
* he abandoned his political party PML Q. He was their undisputed leader.
* While trying to create PMLQ he destroyed the political system in Pakistan……………………we should commit Musharraf to the dustbin of follies.
If Musharraf was so good how come every province gave a vote of no-confidence against him
If Musharaf is so good and has such a great record, then why not return to Pakistan and challenge the incumbents with these numbers.
Atleast Musharraf had the courage to accept his mistakes and resign. Does any political leaders like Nawaz Sharif or Asif Zardari have the courage to resign from being the Quaid or Co-Chairman of there Parties. They are all sinners and no saints and all of them run to foreign destination when there time on the Chair is over. It is the poor pakistani nation who is to suffer the wrath of IMF, World Bank etc whenever these democratic forces come to power. I didnt have to hear about IMF and World Bank setting conditions on us for last 8 years why now?

Mr Ashiq and Friends,
Well Mr Ashiq You may be in knowledge of it that I am supporter of no one; My Motto remains: seeker of Truth and Wisdom.
This is also not the case that who is patriot here and who is not? And whether someone is corrupt in his general conduct in life or otherwise—- this is irrelevant. We will have to be case specific only.
We may like it or not; Courts verdict, is the order of the day which remains supreme. In order to evaluate that whether Nawaz Sharif did this hijack operation on purpose or not; the matter of the fact is that charges levelled up against Nawaz Sharif by the prosecution in the courts have since been set aside in appeal case—- having no substantive evidence value. So Nawaz is free of any charge relating to the hijack. We know that man is marching on to Islamabad to have his go now and be the executive—in the reins of power.
At the moment this case in the court is lost; which means that this hijacking as a game was orchestrated, initiated and conducted by military. The onus of proof now lies with General Musharraf and his bygone government.
By the way Nawaz Sharif could not be charged on hijacking crime as this section of law of Hijacking in Pakistan Penal code did not exist then. He was finally charged for endangering the life of 198 passengers— for not allowing the flight PK 805 to land at Karachi.
This is pertinent to note also that Pilot Sarwat of PK 805 in any case did not declare emergency on board to allow him the emergency landing as reportedly aeroplane was in danger being on low fuel. In the absence of this declaring of emergency by the pilot in charge; the setting aside of the charges as well the awarded of punishment in the appeal court is in order.
Diverting of flight to Nawb shah air port or to any other air port by the airport tower is legal and in order.
Dear Danish,
I think the time of differentiating between the sinner and saint is over. I don’t know when we will realize that this nation is already under going the phases of wrath of our angry God:-
The wrath of the suppressors like USA and its Allies that they are all out in subjugation of our masses through their depletion tools like World Bank, IMF. Their forces are rattling their sabres on our borders and their agents like TTP are unleashing havoc in the society through their subversive acts.
As if this all was enough that; a corruption ridden present government is also imposed on us. They have made life of common people; a Hell. No power(electricity) ,no jobs, nothing to eat, void of any shelter or help for the poor.
If all above is not a wrath of God then what else is this?
Last paragraph; please read
As if this all was NOT enough that; a,,,,
Thanks
There is other side of the picture also:
… that after nuclear detonation test in 1998. Pakistan faced the worst type of political crises as well as Economic sanctions put by the international community—US being in the leading role.
But subsequent events like Cruise missile attack by Clinton on Afghanistan, the Military takeover by Musharraf in Pakistan and later 9/11 incident; and then the miseries of the war on Terror after 9/11.
All this did help put the entire sanctions quagmire of nuclear detonation at the back burner; and you know— out of all this—- Who benefitted the most—-Pakistan.
No wonder; Musharraf job in this complex and pickl-ish situ can be graded as best which he conducted in most dignified manners as possible.
Which we may say that; Thank you Musharraf for taking care of this country and handing the rein back to the Civil government.
Following is the recount of the incident published by BBC on 23 August 2007. Hopefully this will make us understsnd that:
How the 1999 Pakistan coup unfolded
On Tuesday 12 October 1999 it took Pakistan’s military just 17 hours to overthrow the government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and replace him with army chief General Pervez Musharraf.
Events began when Gen Musharraf, on a visit to Sri Lanka, received word that Mr Sharif and intelligence chief General Ziauddin, secretly meeting in Islamabad, were to move against him that very day.
The sacking would be presented as a “retirement” and Gen Ziauddin would step into the most powerful job in the military.
In response, Gen Musharraf raced to Colombo airport boarding a Pakistan International Airlines flight to Karachi.
Back in Islamabad army chiefs loyal to Gen Musharraf began to mobilise troops stationed in nearby Rawalpindi.
Mr Sharif formally appointed Gen Ziauddin as the new head of the military at his official residence in Islamabad that afternoon. But from the start it appeared things were not going to plan - with every senior officer reportedly refusing to accept his command.
Suspecting that something was up, Mr Sharif and Gen Ziauddin realised they had to prevent Gen Musharraf from returning.
At about 1600, the prime minister’s office announced Gen Musharraf’s retirement.
It was the excuse the army high command needed to react, and an hour later troops from 111 Brigade of the 10th Corps were on their way to Islamabad.
House arrest
As troops poured onto the streets of the capital, the 111 Brigade stormed the state television station in Islamabad and shut down the signal.
At Mr Sharif’s residence, troops disarmed the guards and entered the home.
Mr Sharif refused to resign or rescind his orders to sack the army chief of staff, so he was escorted from the building and placed in a guest house close to the airport.
Soldiers fanned out across the nation, taking control of administrative buildings in every province and placing Sharif loyalists and the cabinet under house arrest.
But one man was still needed to complete the coup, and he was still in the air.
Gen Musharraf’s flight approached Karachi airport at about 1830. But air traffic control refused permission for the plane, holding some 200 passengers, to land.
According to charges later laid against Mr Sharif, air traffic controllers ordered the flight to Nawabshah in Sindh province where, it is believed, the prime minister had despatched his own jet and security team to take the general into custody.
National address
Smelling a rat, Gen Musharraf apparently ordered the pilot to ignore the order and continue circling Karachi, despite the fact that fuel was running low.
The general is said to have personally spoken with air traffic controllers, demanding the right to land.
The controllers initially refused, but as soldiers surrounded the control tower they allowed the plane to land, with Gen Musharraf finally reaching home soil at 1947.
Gen Musharraf later said the plane had only seven minutes of fuel remaining.
As the general was whisked away from the airport, officers across the nation reported that the coup was virtually complete.
They controlled the TV stations, administrative buildings, the power and communications infrastructure - and had the entire cabinet under guard.
At 2215 the army restored television broadcasts and minutes later an announcement ran across the bottom of the screen stating that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had been dismissed.
At 0250 on Wednesday morning Gen Musharraf addressed the nation in a pre-recorded message, bringing the Sharif era to a close.
