Murree Declaration : PML-N, PPP take Musharraf Head On
By Ghazala Khan • Mar 9th, 2008 • Category: Politics, Worth A Second Look • 8 Comments •Say it the the stroke of coincidence or the lesson of history that on 9th March 2007 process of deposition of judiciary was started by General (r) Pervez Musharraf, and now on 9th March 2008 though the sixty judges including Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhary remains deposed and locked up, at last the newly elected winning parties PPP and PML-N has announced that the judges will be restored within 30 days after the first session of new assembly through a resolution in the parliament.
This is the one thing which is the decisive factor between the forces of status quo and the forces of change. Forces of status quo which are led by President Musharraf with the help of establishment and lotas of PML-Q and opportunists of MQM and covert JUI-F are nail bitingly fighting for their grim survival while the forces of change have signed the Murree Declaration in which they have decided on various factors for the flourish and flowering of democracy and justice.
On the eve of this joint declaration, some rifts in the PPP have also surfaced. Makhdoom Amin Fahim wasn’t present at the meeting in Murree and he was really angry and demanding at the channels that the PM should be from Sindh, while another PPP leader Ahmad Mukhtar was demanding that PM should be from Punjab. But these petty clashes within the PPP are not that much important and they fail to mar the fragrance which is coming out of the joint declaration.
This declaration charts out many pertinent and important things for the future, like the speaker and deputy speaker of national assembly will be from PPP while PML-N will hold these slots in the Punjab. Give and take policy was seen at the meeting, when PML-N conceded that though they didn’t deem it appropriate but they would take oath from Pervez Musharraf and would join the federal cabinet, and PML-N would support the PPP candidate for the premiership.
I wonder what the President Musharraf would be thinking. One thing is clear and done that he wont’ be thinking of retreat. He has said the CJP the ‘Scum of Earth and a third rate person’. Musharraf also intends to stay for another five years. Will Musharraf allow the reinstatement of the judges? In the presence of 58 2B, and if history is any guide, then only a fool could believe that Musharraf would accept this declaration gleefully.
We can only hope that the establishment doesn’t get too excited and try to rollback this newly aligned democratic process. If it does so, it will be quick curtains for the establishment, and this time revolution is round the corner if they don’t allow democracy to have its way.

Todays development in Bhurban, Murree by the two major parties of Pakistan is a yet another great step in the right direction. Both sides has shown extremely accommodating stance towards each other on all the major issues. Musharaf will be at a loss if he does not take the exit route in a respectable manner, otherwise he will get the worst humiliation. The decision is in his hands, as to how to say “good bye mere aziz humwatno”
Supposing and ideal scenario where President Pervez Musharraf retreats, the Judges are reinstated, article 58 2b is banished, the establishment remains inactive and the army moves back to the barracks. Then democracy would definitely have its way without a revolution.
The picture doesn’t get clear over here. What’s next?
Post 9/11, United States has invested almost 10 billion dollars in Pakistan fighting war against terrorism. Where masses have shown great deal of interest in the recent election that they don’t want a Pro American Pakistani government at all. Either the New Govt. Falls out with the people of Pakistan the way the previous Govt. did or may be this is the time has come to fall out with the strategic partner in war. If in case Govt. do falls out with the US then, would it take us back in to the same stage where Pakistan once was threatened to be sent in the Stone Age.
The new breed of terrorism which we have seen in last 6-7 years in Pakistan that is turning the generations in to headless chickens. Hundreds of miles away in the tribal areas schools, mosques and houses are been targeted and countless people die in those attacks by kinetic operations led my United States with full intelligence sharing with Pakistani Armed Forces and then I see suicide bombings in my own city killing several people including those who are with Anti US sentiments or thoughts. (The real target is missing all the time in both situations respectively)
In the beginning of these comments I came up with an assumption and with all those Ifs. The reason of that is none of Political Leaders who are busy in forming the new Govt. came up with a solid statement over this strategic partnership on war against terrorism, that they would redirect the policy in the light of pure Muslim interest or may be I am not getting it at all. On the other side of the world the Potential Candidate running for the US Election is showing lot of concern over US PAK policy she said that if voted to power she would change the US’ policy towards Pakistan because it focuses too much pro-Musharraf while ignoring other issues.
please notify me if i am commenting wrong on this article because i am a newbie on this webiste and subject
“and let slip the dogs of war”, something or someone will have to go !
God save Pakistan.
Zardari and Nawaz are showing lot of maturity gained may be in jail and exile while the likes of Fahim and others are not able to see that it is late Benazir who was singlularly responsible for the DEAL WITH MUSHARAFF which made this revolution possible. She was also responsible for nawaz joining the electoral fray unlike Imran. Fahim has to understand that it is her lagacy which got the votes. He has to lump the leadership of Zardari for the sake of pakistan.
Every leader of Pakistan(both military and elected) died violently and pakistan is the loser due to lack of expertise. Today Zardari and Nawaz are showing maturity and i hope the youth and lawyers show same maturity. they must march to Democracy one step at a time not like Yeltsin who broke the country.
Two big thieves could not stay together at one place for a long time. And people will see soon that PML Q will form the govt. in Centre and in Punjab with Amin Faim as their candidate for the Premiership with MQM and allies.
God will save the country from these crooks by this way, even Pakistanis had chosen themselves desaster by electing these looters and plunderers of national wealth during 1988-1999
All right!! so you are runnig wesite with one-sided storeis. This is your struggle of independent media
You Pakistan Spectators!!???
You have deleted my six comments till now. I too have the right to express my feelings or not.
Anti-Musharraf Spectator??????
Here is why we cannot trust Nawaz [the self acclaimed ami-ul-mumineen]
Nawaz fought with 4 Army Chiefs…. General Kakar (over Ghulam Ishaq), General Asif nawaz (over operation clean-up), General Karamat (over NSC) and General Musharraf (when he appointed a ISI Ziauddin butt as COAS)….. when you kick someone…. why shouldn’t someone else kick you ????
Nawaz fought with 2 Presidents. Ghulam Ishaq Khan and Leghari.
Nawaz fought with Public, when he froze their $ 10 billion Foreign Currency Accounts. When he started operation clean-up.
Nawaz fought with Media, when he halted their paper supplies on KHI Port. When he merged private STN into PTV. When he had beaten & locked-up Najam Sethi of Dailytimes. When he had Ittifaq foundry’s Union leader thrown in Fire in BATTI.
