Moral Fiber of Pakistan Army

The magnificent performance of the rank and file of the Army fighting the counter-insurgency in Swat is no surprise. Whether in Kashmir in 1947-48, Dir in 1958 and 1976, the Rann of Kutch, occupied Kashmir (Operation Gibraltar) and later in the full-fledged war of 1965, during the 1971 war, in the Balochistan counter-insurgency in 1973-5, Siachen continuously since 1985, in Kargil in 1998 and in FATA since 2004 (and many more small conflicts that would take many more pages), officers and men have kept their commitment.

The average officer-to-soldier ratio in combat fatalities during conventional operations being 1:17 or 1:18 in most Armies represents the command structure at the field level functioning adequately, young officers (including lieutenant colonels) leading rather than sending men to their deaths. In the Pakistan Army and the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF), the superior 1:10 or 1:11 average through many conflicts means that the young officers are far more enthusiastic at leading from the front in the face of fire. This ratio is also usually higher among commandos (Special Forces).

The 100-plus fatalities to-date reveals a disproportionate number of officers in combat-related deaths, the ratio in Swat reportedly 1:5 or 1:6 being unusually high. Sons of a number of ex-servicemen (including friends of mine) have given the ultimate sacrifice for their nation, this is a great indication (and vindication) of the moral fibre of this Army. One cannot eulogise such men, fathers and sons, in mere words.

  1. Agreed, that’s what is the core of our armed forces. And due to this only I always argue with my friends that we cannot blame all army due to actions of some.

  2. We are not only fighting the war of our nations but the world
But still the Indians are saying that we are under prasure.
this is my message to the Indians.
you have no idea what pain is!!!!!!!
what it is like to see the inocent faces of dead children!!
in worldtradecenter more then 3000 people were killed.
in Pakistan more then 5000 people have been killed.
yea right we are not serious!!!!!

  3. War against terrorism is a war for the very Survival of Pakistan.

This war is a battle between democracy and oppression; a battle between Secularism and Mullahism.

InshaAllah our forces of freedom, liberty and democracy will prevail and we will crush the terrorists forever!

  4. Dear Friends,

There is no doubt that in the past the military top brass is found repeatedly louvered in;—— ad is seen resorting to lateral entries to come in and been holding the rein of power in the country. There may be many reasons for that— but it must be understood that institution of Pak army as such has always managed to stay at distance and got nothing to do with such melodramas which have often been staged at our national political scenes.

While handling the rein of power the top brass has always been in the spotlight for an extensive criticism also. Supposedly they always took over the rein at the most testing times and in the best interest of the nation. But rather than reaping some appreciations for it, the end game has always been rather downcast murky and dismal— earning scorn and dejection for the institution also.

Invariably two out of three past military regimes have brought the modernity and advancement in the society and that they always moved in as a saviour when political forces were found failing. It has always been a rescue operation,—- rather demanded by the nation and this input may not be disregarded.

The present-day military operations Rah e Rast as well as Rah e Nijat are the operations under taken by the army to restore the lost national territories in the fields of ideology as well as to secure the governmental writ in the lost grounds at the hands of traitors and enemy of this nation where ironically some political parties are found working as abettors.

  5. OK I am a bit confused after reading the title for this short article with the actual content or body of this article. I feel it stopped too short, yes there is no doubt the fighting ranks have the best interest of nation and country deep at there heart, but once they cross a Colonel’s rank most of them are completely transformed, may it would have been nice if the author followed that.
Power is very addictive, and the top brass is addicted to not only power but money as well. As long as army does not address this core issue of corruption among itself it can not resolve the issues.

  6. I agree with Khan bro!
