Load-Shedding Dances Nude in Pakistan
By Gul Raiz • Oct 31st, 2008 • Category: Politics, Worth A Second Look • One Response •Darkness has become the fate of Pakistanis. Power breakdowns, load-shedding, power-shedding and the hide n seek of electricity have become the part of routine Pakistani lives. Nobody is taking appraisals of the worsening power crisis, and instead the ruling party’s leaders are pointing fingers at the opposition for the violent protests staged by the people around the Punjab and NWFP province.
There is no urgency on the part of the WAPDA officials. The power breakdown across the country is so widespread that it involves the entire electricity generation, transmission and distribution system of the country. Although, there has been no end or reduction in frequent load-shedding, there is little or no evidence available on the ground to see any substantial steps taken by the WAPDA management to improve, upgrade or expand the capacity and working of the overloaded electricity system.
In the villages of all the provinces, the power comes just for 2 or 1 hour. In the cities it comes for 6 or 7 hours. In the mega cities like Karachi, Lahore and Faisalabad, the industry and business has come to a standstill due to the unavailability of the electricity, and the education of children is suffering due to of hours’ long power outage. Jobs are being lost and business are being closed by the monster of darkness.
And yet there is no urgency or measures on the war footings by our so cherished democratic rulers.
