Line of Action by Presidency Over NRO

By Salman Mugsi • Nov 23rd, 2009 • Category: Politics, Worth A Second Look • 8 Comments

If ther has ever come a crossroad in the history of Pakistan, then it is now. The decision which is pending with the Presidential camp over the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) will decide the fate of the democracy and the country too.

What are the options available for the government in this regard:

  • Just let the NRO expire on 28th November and let the courts do whatevery they do
  • Issue yet another ordinance to protect the NRO
  • Voluntarily announce that the NRO beneficiaries will themselves let go of NRO benefits and go to the courts
  • All NRO beneficiaries including President resign
  • All NRO beneficiaries excluding President resign
  • Admit the crimes, ask for national forgiveness, return the money, and quit

All these options are quite valid. Some are principled which seem unworkable for the government given thier previous track record. But perhaps the presidency still think that it’s a dead issue and they don’t have to worry about anything.

The presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar has said many legal experts were of the view that the cases under the NRO stood terminated. “However, this matter is before the court and it is up to the court to decide.” The question is that whether the presidency will maintain its wait and see policy till the court comes out with the verdict regarding NRO, or they do some behind the scene manipulation?

This is perhaps the first real test for the Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry. He must not shift his wait to somebody else and take up this case, which has become the top issue in the country, when our very survival is at stake.

  1. When we talk of a ‘National Reconciliation Order’ it means that a corrupt nation was made to bow down to repent its past sins and they openly admit that although they robbed, they plundered but from now on, they will no more indulge in any such business in the future….and although they went astray but they kept the faith and that they love their country.
The history should be counting the NRO as the stepping stone in the life of people—but have we got all that?
The answer may be Big Nay.
Then this inert business of NRO adopted in Pakistan is serving whom that it does not hold any waters or bears any credibility— then what is this for——-except for the few who came in ridding on its wings and very conveniently took over the rein of this country.

papa aap ki harkaton ki waja se nana(ZAB) k khandaan ki izzat pe daagh lag gaya jai

    Zardari (with his colgate smile):
Beta daagh tou chala jaye ga , yeh waqat phir nae aaye ga

  4. It has been said that the Presidential camp over the NRO will decide the fate of the country. How is that helping the cause? There is enough panic due to terrorist activity, and that is the real issue at hand, and collectively we can fix it.

  5. NRO IS actually a tool devised to bring in Civlian democrasy with leaders who were all impl;icated in corruption by various Military regimes who ruled without any care.and kept the civilians in tightl leash. It is not that Zardari the 10%, nawaz sheriff or others like MQM leadership are angels except may be Imran type aristocrasy who always had support of Army chaps.
Chief justice must show wisdom to bury the past so that the infant democrasy grows. No politician whether in west or east or NOT corrupt. It is that they know how to hide better.

  6. I am totatally dis agreed with Mr Johann…
coz if we start to buree every thing of past then what would be remain with us,,obviously nothing…we as a nation will lost all creadability as well as the looted capital of the tax payers….we have to think now and keep the accountability process transparent and speedy..so it is request to the so called honour elleged members that please step down and return what you looted of our nation…all elleged members have nothing to live more life…ten years,ok twenty, let us assume 40 more years…then what….why they are choosing the wrong path which is ending at the ditch of HELL…..

  7. Johann, you really are not aware of the ground realities in Pak.
