Legal Committee for Judges Crumbling

By Sameer Shaharyar • May 6th, 2008 • Category: Politics • 7 Comments •

After the resignation of Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim from the legal committee for the judges, Aitzaz Ahsan, the president of Supreme Court Bar Association has also expressed his disappointment over the proceedings. He has told law minister Farooq H. Naek that if committee doesn’t finalize the recommendations today, then he would also leave the committee.

The reason why Fakhruddin and Aitzaz are upset by the committee is due to the dominating and dictating attitude of PPP members Farooq H. Naek and Rehman Malik. Their other reason is the presence of former law minister Abdul Hafeez Pirzada who represents President Musharraf and insisting on the inclusion of all the Nov. 3 PCO judges in the next formation of the apex court.

There is very little hope that this committee would achieve anything. PPP’s attitude towards the reinstatement of judiciary has become pretty much clear, and it’s very unlikely that this committee would come out with anything positive provided it remains intact till the 12th May comes.

A new struggle is on the cards for sure.

  1. Whatever it is, it is not in the supreme national interest. It is an act of monstrous impropriety and it’s shaking the very foundation of our country, this has to and must be stopped. One can not remain silent at this tragedy it’s contemptuous and the damages it is causing are irreversible.

Shame! Shame! Shame! on all these so called friends of the Rule of Law.

  2. The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn. — Alvin Toffler

  3. THE REASON WHY THE “LEARNED” MEMBERS ARE LEAVING THE COMMITTEE IS BECAUSE THEY KNOW THAT THEY WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ACHIEVE THEIR “ULTERIOR MOTIVES” - AND WOULD RATHER STAY OUT AND SAY “I TOLD YOU SO…… ” . TO HELL WITH THE …. LET US MOVE ON AND SOLVE THE PROBLEMS OF THE COMMON MAN.

  4. Hafeez Peerzada, who was a participant of the talk show with Mr Ahsan, said he was not representing President Pervez Musharraf in the committee and his name was suggested by heads of the coalition parties.

However, he said that recommendations of the committee could not be made effective without constitutional amendments. He said the executive order needed to reinstate the judges would flow only through such a legislation.

  5. SIR - NOBODY IS INTERESTED WHO DOES AND WHO DOES NOT - AND HOW OR WHAT THEY DO WITH THE JUDGES … AS FAR AS THE COMMON MAN IS CONCERENED … TO HELL WITH IT …. IF ONLY THE “CHANNELS” HAS THE COURAGE TO ASK AND PROPOGATE THE VIEWS OF THE MAN ON THE STREET .. THE WHOLE NATION WOULD KNOW HOW MUCH WE CARE ABOUT THE “INDEPENDENT JUDICIARY” THEY MAY COME ACROSS WORDS THAT THEY WILL BE ASHAMED TO SHOW … FOR GOD SAKE LET US MOVE ON ……

  6. I get comment # 2 above and it’s splashed all over.

Ghazala, someone has to take the responsibility of raising such issues threatening lives of the less advantaged in our society. You have proved to be a person with conscience and you are brave enough to listen and communicate the voice of your conscience. Bless you & more courage to you!

On the one hand we have people being crushed by the hardships for no fault of theirs; on the other we have this display of self importance. No matter how hard one tries, but it’s impossible to come to the conclusion that some former judges deserve all our attention than those of us, certainly with lesser status in society, whose very existence is in jeopardy and many who find it impossible to carry on the burden any more. Country’s economy is collapsing, the whole government machinery is busy massaging some bruised egos. This is absurd. Ordinary citizens have every reason to detest and to distrust the motives of those who are draining the nation with their love for justice. What can be greater injustice than death for economic reasons. Let the champions of justice ask the mourners of Bushra and Mohammad Shafiq the meaning of justice. Saima and Zubair will tell us what we understand about justice and what they think of us the nation.
