Lackluster Elections Benefits Whom?
By Brig. (r) Junaid Zaman • Feb 9th, 2008 • Category: Pakistan Vote'08, Politics • No Responses •Recent terrorist incident in the ANP’s election rally in Charsadda has once again cast very gray shadows on an already dull campaign, which is yet to heat up amidst cold weather, fear of bloodshed and little hope for change.
It’s not that nation is that much weak to not to rally behind their leaders in chilling weather, but the reason behind the cold response from the masses mainly can be attributed to the uncertainty in many matters.
The first and foremost doubt nation is about the fairness of these polls. Partisan Election Commission, hand-picked PML-Qish interim government, large-scale transfers of polling staff, pre-poll rigging, partisan local government, are all supporting the allegations of PML-N and PPP candidates about the rigging.
When the top judiciary of the country is under house arrest along with many notable lawyers, and the media has been threatened and controlled by the state, whereas police is always on the hunt for the dissenters, then there is little chance left for populace to get excited about the elections.
Perhaps that’s what They want.
