It’s Not End of the World
By Salman Mugsi • Sep 2nd, 2008 • Category: Politics • 2 CommentsI never ever fully fathomed the notion of working relationship between Pakistan People’s Party and Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz. It was more like mingling violet with the velvet. Their very core is miles apart and their natural and logical position is to go after each other. Bipartisanship is a boon for any country’s democratic roots and their ill-fated marriage was hampering the democracy.
Now as the logical end of the coalition has reached, it’s time to look towards the future and both parties should align themselves clearly on the opposite pillars to sustain the edifice of democracy in Pakistan. PPP, as they are in government must not get carried away and adopt the legacy of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto who became chief Marital Law administrator and got himself hanged and we saw eleven years of choked status-quo-ed country. They need to be on their toes to act and they should utilize the still untapped tool of parliament to take and implement decisions. Zardari House (or from 6th Sept. on) President House must not be the origin of all decisions and wisdom. Gilani has to rise to the occasion.
PML-N has got a fine chance to payback of their follies of the ninties. Just like PPP, they have remained in the character assassinations, mudslinging, manipulating judiciary, confronting military and maligning establishment. The good thing is that the Nawaz Sharif of 2008 is a very changed man and he has proved that with his actions. He must also instill that approach in his acolytes like Chaudhary Nisar, Ahsan Iqbal and host of others, who are spewing fire without cue. They are a very strong opposition, and that’s a good omen for the country. PML-N has also got to rise to the occasion.
Both Nawaz Sharif and Zardari should establish some minimum working relationship and they both should discourage the fireband bugs like Salman Taseer, Chaudhary Nisar, etc etc on either side.

A fairly decent and reasonably neutral analysis and recommendation. Salam, I am sure that you also wish, like I do, that such a sensible and common interest had been the guiding principles for these two politicians right from the beginning immediately after the elections. Had they been guided by such wisdom and acute need of our circumstances, I am certain, we already would have witnessed ourselves marching, with our heads high, on that much desired road to fulfill our desire and make our dreams come true.
Lets hope it is still not too late - I do!
