Interview with Blogger Richard Sung
By The Pakistani Spectator • Jul 22nd, 2008 • Category: Interviews • No ResponsesWould you please tell us something about you and your site? The site provides a daily look at important technology issues that intersect with several domains, including telecom, software, and consumer electronics. With so many big themes taking place at present, understanding the big picture is tough, and hopefully, my site provides some valuable insights into this dynamic.
Do you feel that you continue to grow in your writing the longer you write? Why is that important to you?
The short answer is yes. Conveying the message effectively is the most important area to improve in especially since technology jargon can be very confusing!
I’m wondering what some of your memorable experiences are with blogging?
I’ve been blogging while traveling through Europe over the past three months, and has been a welcome constant for me. But blogging as an activity hasn’t been especially memorable - I just remember a lot of hard work!
What do you do in order to keep up your communication with other bloggers?
I don’t communicate with other bloggers.
What do you think is the most exciting or most innovative use of technology in politics right now?
In my view, the most exciting aspect of blogging is that it provides a platform for anyone to publish their views, and if a blogger can consistently post compelling content, he/she should be able to gather a significant following. Replacing traditional media to some extent is a good thing.
Do you think that these new technologies are effective in making people more responsive?
Yes. The fact that blogs are well-read means that incumbent parties that can control traditional media outlets don’t drown out other voices.
What do you think sets Your site apart from others?
I can write on a lot of different technology topics with credibility because I’ve worked in those areas before. Technologists generally aren’t drawn to writing, which is a good thing for me.
If you could choose one characteristic you have that brought you success in life, what would it be?
Persistance has been important.
What was the happiest and gloomiest moment of your life?
I can’t remember.
If you could pick a travel destination, anywhere in the world, with no worries about how it’s paid for - what would your top 3 choices be?
Iceland, Africa, Australia
What is your favorite book and why?
Catch-22 by Joseph Heller - a great introduction to the humour inherent in hopeless situations.
What’s the first thing you notice about a person (whether you know them or not)?
Whether they make eye contact with you or not.
Is there anyone from your past that once told you you couldn’t write?
No.
How bloggers can benefit from blogs financially?
Absolutely. Disclosing what that financial relationship though is important to maintain credibility.
Is it true that who has a successful blog has an awful lot of time on their hands?
That’s probably true. Putting up unique content takes a lot of time.
What role can bloggers of the world play to make this world more friendlier and less hostile?
By playing nice I suppose. Taking shots at someone when you wouldn’t say it to their face is cowardly.
Who are your top five favourite bloggers?
Robert X. Cringely
Walt Mossberg
Is there one observation or column or post that has gotten the most powerful reaction from people?
No.
What is your perception about Pakistan and its people?
Positive. I’m looking forward to visiting one day soon.
Have you ever become stunned by the uniqueness of any blogger?
No.
What is the most striking difference between a developed country and a developing country?
The disparity between the rich and poor in those countries.
What is the future of blogging?
Blogging’s future is bright.
You have also got a blogging life, how has it directly affected both your personal and professional life?
It’s been a big consumer of my time. But I love it so far.
What are your future plans?
Undetermined at present. I’ll likely find a job later this year though will continue blogging hopefully.
