Interview with Blogger Arfa Siddiqi
By The Pakistani Spectator • Mar 19th, 2009 • Category: Interviews • 23 CommentsWould you please tell us something about you and your site?
I’m a person with many facets to my personality. I’m analytical, a walking contradiction and everything you wouldn’t expect me to be. I enjoy debating and discussing issues that broaden my horizons. I’ve always been very fierce against injustice, and thus law is a profession I’m naturally inclined towards.
My blog was a way for me to vent-out political, religious, cultural and personal issues that were ripping each other’s head off in my mind. It was a way for me to reach out to an audience that would engage in interesting topics that I otherwise didn’t have a chance to discuss with people around me, and being an introvert and non-verbose in public didn’t exactly help either. The lack of public-speaking and a mind full of opinions gave birth to what we now know as BoogieMonsterMan (www.boogiemonsterman.blogspot.com), formerly known as PoisonedApple08.
Do you feel that you continue to grow in your writing the longer you write? Why is that important to you?
I definitely feel like I’ve grown in my writing skills, because of the feedback I get from readers and critics over time. The mass amount of blogs available out there helps you to compare your writing skills with more experienced bloggers and helps you learn from them, which in turn improves your writing as you learn from their styles. This develops not only your own unique way of writing, which is present among every writer, but also takes away the flaws in writing.
I feel it’s important to grow as a writer because I being the person I am, I wish to inspire, to bring about a change in someone’s life, provoke their thoughts, change their actions. And in order to do that, one needs to captivate the audience with their words to spark inspiration.
I’m wondering what some of your memorable experiences are with blogging?
I don’t know about memorable, but one of the most important ones was when a favourite free-lance writer for this magazine read my blog and advised me on my choice of words. That day was when I really grew as a blogger.
What do you do in order to keep up your communication with other bloggers?
Make a pact to trade comments ;). Nah, I’m just kidding. It just sort of happens, really. They visit yours, you visit theirs, it’s blog-to-blog, hopping around on the blogosphere.
What do you think is the most exciting or most innovative use of technology in politics right now?
Animations, no doubt. C’mon now, we all know what this is pointing towards! xD
Do you think that these new technologies are effective in making people more responsive?
Definitely. Even if it’s not voiced, it doesn’t cease to inspire.
What do you think sets Your site apart from others?
The fact that it covers the most random topics of all sorts one can expect to find. From religion, politics, languages, culture to random teenage moments, poetry, music, etc.
If you could choose one characteristic you have that brought you success in life, what would it be?
Being a Muslimah.
What was the happiest and gloomiest moment of your life?
As Paulo Coelho puts it: “Some people appear to be happy, but they simply don’t give it much thought. Others make plans..and while they’re busy doing that, they’re like bulls looking for the bullfighter: they react instinctively, they blunder on, with no idea where the target is. They get their car, sometimes even a Ferrari, and they thing that’s the meaning of life. They never question it. Yet their eyes betray the sadness that even they don’t know they carry in their soul.”
I guess it sums up pretty much everything. I haven’t found the meaning of happiness.
If you could pick a travel destination, anywhere in the world, with no worries about how it’s paid for - what would your top 3 choices be?
Turkey, Italy, France.
What is your favorite book and why?
The Zahir- it’s one of those thought-provoking books that just speaks your hidden thoughts.
What’s the first thing you notice about a person (whether you know them or not)?
It’s a tough one between the eyes, hands and their facial expression.
Is there anyone from your past that once told you you couldn’t write?
Not that I remember, then again, saying that my memory is horrible would be quite an understatement, I suppose.
How bloggers can benefit from blogs financially?
I don’t think blogs are meant to be financially rewarding. It’s more like a way of connecting with people around the world and sharing thoughts and experiences.
Is it true that who has a successful blog has an awful lot of time on their hands?
Depends on how you define successful =]
There is no clear way of defining success on the blogosphere, specially since it’s something so widespread and has so many variations in its kind.
What role can bloggers of the world play to make this world more friendlier and less hostile?
As I said, write to inspire. Captivate the readers with your well-voiced thoughts to wake up a sleeping-conscience.
Who are your top five favourite bloggers?
Seher- www.2short2sweet.blogspot.com
Shahnaz- www.shahnazness.blogspot.com
UglyDuckling- www.uglyduckling91.blogspot.com
Homer- www.smacula.blogspot.com
Mubi- www.goldenpages-mubi.blogspot.com
Is there one observation or column or post that has gotten the most powerful reaction from people?
I think it’s got to be one of my poems or article pondering on life.
What is your perception about Pakistan and its people?
I believe in Pakistan, in its people, and in their abilities. I believe that they are one of the most hard-working and dedicated people, however, they need to be more knowledgeable, and by that I don’t mean just books, I mean ideas. Visions need to be broadened. One last thing, all that’s missing in our society is persistence. Life will keep failing you, it’s you who has to get up and fight back and prove it wrong.
I think Dufferistan is pretty rad, although it’s really hard for me to read that blog because it’s in Urdu.
What is the most striking difference between a developed country and a developing country?
That majority of even the most uneducated people in a developed country are open-minded, as and when compared to developing countries.
What is the future of blogging?
I do not believe that a thing such as blogging has a “future”. I mean, it has started, but
it’s something that is based upon each individual. It happens to be a hobby or passion for most, not just a fad or occupation for which there is scope in the future/present.
You have also got a blogging life, how has it directly affected both your personal and professional life?
Blogging for the most part, has helped me gain confidence in my writing abilities. Knowing that someone has been inspired makes you want to be even better, and this in turn, will help me in my currently non-existent professional life, since a career in creative writing is also one of the things that I wish to pursue.
I plan to complete my O-levels and look for an appropriate course for a bachelors degree in law.
Read, inspire, be inspired, so that we can strive to make this world a better place.
