Interview with Blogger Adnan Zahid
By The Pakistani Spectator • Feb 27th, 2009 • Category: Interviews • One ResponseCould you tell us what made you decide to blog, and what was the inspiration behind it?
I started the blog to give voice to the strong feeling of frustration I experience when I speak to people about Pakistan. I was fed up with the pessimism that had taken hold of people in Pakistan. I found that many criticize, but very few are interested in exerting efforts in constructive work. Because of my studies I cannot return until October of 2010. I decided to blog about life in Pakistan, the idea was to at least present an optimistic perspective, until I was able to return and do something constructive.
What do you think sets Your blog apart from other blogs?
I would like to say that the blog successfully evokes nostalgia for a simpler life in Pakistan, which unfortunately will be forgotten, unless a concerted effort is made to preserve it.
If you could choose one characteristic you have that brought you success in life, what would it be?
Trust in Allah.
What was the happiest and gloomiest moment of your life?
I look forward to the happiest moment and hope I never have a gloomiest moment.
Urdu Blogs have got huge potential, when do you think they will really take on the online horizon in Pakistan?
The day our educated class is able to get over the inferiority complex and embrace our language.
It is not money that is stopping me from traveling to my favorite travel destinations. It is not so much different places that fascinate me, but rather, different times. Today, all places in the world have this stale taste of sameness.
What is your favorite book and why?
Some sort of a legal penalty should apply to people who are able to answer this question with a single book.
What is your favorite meal, dress, and sport?
Mutton Biryani cooked by my Chachi, followed by sainwyaan cooked by another chachi.
Which are the top 3 places in Pakistan for honeymoon?
Have no experience of honeymoons.
What’s the first thing you notice about a person (whether you know them or not)?
As the saying go: “Eyes are windows to the soul”
Whose Future is more bright in Pakistan; English blogs or Urdu Blogs?
English blogs.
I have never thought about benefiting financially from a blog.
Do you think Pakistani bloggers tend to remain somewhat self-centered and really don’t go out of their shells? Is it the oriental style of blogging, or they are still unsure about it?
The act of writing sometimes requires exposing ourselves in ways that people belonging to conservative cultures meet with some apprehension. I like it this way.
What do you think where the Pakistani blogosphere is right now?
Infancy.
Who are your top five favourite bloggers in Pakistan?
Pakistaniat
Chaiwala
Cyclewala
Not really.
What is the future of blogging in Pakistan?
I think the number of blogs will increase but I fear the content will not be impressive.
You have also got a blogging life, how has it directly affected both your personal and professional life?
According to research people who keep diaries are happier. Also, traditional wisdom suggests that sharing your life with other people brings happiness. My experience confirms these two propositions.
What are your future plans?
I do not plan much. For now I want to finish my PhD. Return to Pakistan. And once I am back then I will probably think about other plans.
