Instead of Salary Increase, Number of Judges Should be Raised

May be, may be the government has once again given a handsome and lucrative pay raise to the judges to generate some dislike among the populace. This move by the government has angered the government employees who are waiting for the recommendations by the pay and pension commission for ages, but havent got any relief.

President Asif Ali Zardari on Tuesday approved an increase in the salaries and judicial allowances of the judges of the Supreme Court and high courts after amendments to President’s Orders 1, 2 & 3 as recommended by the prime minister in a summary.

One wonders why the pay and pension commission wasnt consulted before this salary raise?

Even if pay and pension commission of Pakistan doesnt deal with the salaries of judges, is it ethical for the judges to accept this raise, when the other government employees are suffering?

Apart from the salary, the judicial allowance of the judges of the Supreme Court and high courts has also been increased. The chief justice and judges of the Supreme Court would now be taking a judicial allowance of Rs 113,750 per month as against Rs 87,500.

Similarly, chief justices and judges of high courts will now be getting Rs 91,000 as against Rs 70,000 after increase in their judicial allowance. The salary and allowances are allowed to the judges of the Supreme Court under paras 1 and 2 of the Fifth Schedule of the Constitution (Supreme Court part) while the salary and allowances of the judges of high court are allowed under paras 1 and 2 of the Fifth Schedule (high court part) of the Constitution.

Is this the justice?

Would Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, the celebrated chief justice of Pakistan return this raise and would ask government to first give a raise to the lower government employees?

  1. This is not necessary. If people are dying no matter, the influentials should accept this as granted. No rules and laws for the lawsuit bearers and the ones sitting as rulers. The only sufferer will ultimately be the poor and hungry. Shame on this system. Only a revolution based on economy and humanity can do some good to poor’s life.
