Implications of NRO Verdict

By Shayan Khan • Dec 17th, 2009 • Category: Politics, Worth A Second Look • 10 Comments

Candidly speaking, everyone is asking around as now what is the status and future of the President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari after the historical verdict dished out by the 17-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, in his short order.

Though 8000+ people have benefitted from the infamous National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO), people of Pakistan are interested in the status of the people who hold the public offices. Ok, the president of Pakistan has got the indemnity from the punishment due to his office (though some consider this untrue), but what about the Rehman Malik, Wajid Shamsul Hassan and host of others in the present dispensation.

President Zardari was convicted in Swiss cases by the Swiss courts and conviction was for 180 days. If the NRO is null and void since 5th October 2007, then was the election of president was legal?

The verdict against the NRO is a resounding slap on the ominous face of dictatorship. Pervaiz Musharraf struck the NRO with the late Benazir Bhutto, and the deal was to give both parties power and other bounties for a long time while forgiving the past crimes. But destiny has the final say and then Musharraf was gone, and Zardari became president. Now NRO is no more. Swiss cases are opened now. In Swiss cases, the cases are Asif Zardari versus Government of Pakistan. Now Asif Zardari is the president of Pakistan. That’s one heck of a perplexing situation.

Oh, and forget about the moral and ethical dimensions of this whole filthy issue. Had they been so ethical, they would have never done the NRO.

  1. why could he resign coz he was elected by 2/3rd majority in parliament.

  2. It seems that Punjab is slowly accusing and punishing leaders from the three provinces. Sometimes it is judicial process (Bhutto, Zardari etc) and sometimes open killings (Bhutto family, Bugti, Karachi operation etc). Shameful times for the two parties originating from Sindh. Our dear leader Nawaz SHARIF is conspicuous by his absence at critical times as usual.

  3. If you have good intention behind any decision that gives strength to national structure and help to root out the termite of corruption then what is fear of its implication or complication.Main thing is execution of its canceling order and that is now implemented by the power of 17 superior judges. Now it is pressure of media, public , some sincere representatives and few honest executives that would make the difference in coming days.Army establishment has also got blow that the pawns which they prepared to work under their agenda on govt houses becomes impotent in each passing day. they are also in confusion how to bear the burden of these liabilities in coming days.
One thing is minutely observed that no doubt SC trapped the politicians, bureaucrats, army officers and civilians who got benefits through this NRO but why they ignored its real designers who actually floated and offered this notorious and anti state option to absconders of state. So it looks that SC is still under constraints of army mafia and how they are threatening them is not clear as we all know that in an Islamic society the person who offer or accepts bribes do come on same level of punishment.

  4. After Miss Benazir Bhutto, the assuming of seat of power by Asif Ali Zardari is just incidental that after her sad demise; PPP could reap a sweeping sympathy vote and man being the widower of Benazir was crowned on top to occupy an ancestral seat of his party. His entry is simply incidental. Under the circumstances he may be seen as a beneficiary of NRO also that he came in Benazir Bhutto’s knapsack as luggage —but to blemish him being the prime suspected character in NRO scandal is not justified.

  5. lets not stay at one point or focus on one thing for a long time guys. Pakistan has a long way. I thing the NRO has been finished last time. Let the judiciary do its job and we the people should be more focused to speak against the extremism that is growing in the northern parts of our country.

  6. @2 I miss your valuable comments.
I give another conclusion in your Punjabi target tone that all bhutoos and bugti were killed under the eras of military dictators and all dictators who directly took the responsibility of their killings on the name of national interests. One of dictator was Punjabi and other was Urdu speaking so conclusive point is that its not ethnic difference that made this thing possible but it is their power of greed of military dictator that made this daylight killing possible.I think Bugtis’ heirs are much loyal to their father who at least still raising their legal attacks on musahrf but all heirs of bhuttos have been proved to be cowards and opportunists who just used the dead bodies of their leaders as ladder to top seats. They ignored the interferenc/presence of dictators on the murder of their leaders and never ever dare to bring them under the difficulties of probes and legal charge.
Oh sure only restrained themselves on verbal attack on dictators.
Same response is being seen from shairf and Co on dictators but as they are out of power control so one can give them benefit of doubt but PPP officially and legally missed this chance twice and now they actually lost their destination of politics too,
Who is stopping you not ot take actions against sharif.Altaf dada gave verbal allegations on the account of sharif for 1992 massacre so prepare the case and indict him in court. We would be first one to appreciate all this but don’t limit your blame game in artificial wailing as it is kind of womanish act and real leadership should avoid this comedic session.

  7. No. 5, Hira Mir,
You are right but too shortsighted. Does trimming the leaves benefits more than cutting the roots? Definitely not. These corrupt elites are the rootcause of all evils, including extremism which is actually an outcome of the sense of deprivation and discrimination among the masses.

  8. PPP is writing new kind of history as democracy loving party which made 1973 constitution is protecting its chair person under the amendments and NRO made by zia ulhaq and Musharraf respectively .Both dictators were directly and indirectly involved in Bhuttos’ murders.
So tragic scene in PPP that how Bhutto name is being misused by its heirs that none of them as ever shown such daring spirit for which he has earned life time support in the field of politics.

  9. Our leaders are innocently ignorant to the word of Democracy. Democracy is the rule of Law, not the rule of Zardari, Altaf or N-sharif. As such there is no Democracy. Corrupt leadership must stepdown to save democracy.

  10. @All,
Simply any body from any party on any position must go under a legal evaluation and then be called innocent or criminal. NRO etc. are not as per constitutio and ethical, just to protect few peoples many people were given opportunity to hide their corruption and crimes, all must go under a trial whether PPP MQM , buearucracy etc etc etc…

in the end i would like to say
    Jeay BHuttoo………..
    Pakistan Khappay….
    lolz
