Haqqani’s contract expires in May

By Guest Blogger • Mar 5th, 2010 • Category: Features • 7 Comments

“The News” has gone into overdrive these days. Anonymous sources confided “The News” that Ambassador Haqqani’s contract is going to expire in May and reports speak of Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir being posted to Washington to replace Haqqani. This big and false rumor to begin to agitate again, I surmise. If you go through this story, you feel doubt about credibility of this report.

There are two things which need to be discussed with reference to this report:

1.    Credibility of Source.

2.    Foreign Secretary Replaces Ambassador.

Most readers and journalists agree that rewards can outweigh the risk of reporting based on anonymous sources. Still, a significant number of readers say the media would be better off not using them, even if that means waiting longer for an important story. Researchers have shown once again that the use of anonymous sources harms the credibility of news stories, according to a recent study published in Newspaper Research Journal. Readers sometimes believe sources have a vested interest in being anonymous, and they may also interpret the use of un-named sources as reporter incompetence, according to the study. Either way, the result is lower credibility. Anonymity brings with it a willingness to cast light into the dark places that hide secrets about what we all need to know. On the other hand, the use of anonymous sources makes the media a dupe for putting out unreliable stories. I don’t consider that any news source as credible. I apply a generous dose of critical thinking and common sense and then do my own analysis. I also watch/listen closely to how a newscaster makes a report. If too much personal opinion (for those programs that are not an obvious opinion-based talk program) or bias colors a report, I know to be careful in believing all they say.

There should be a limit to lies and propaganda. Senior reporters are not expected of blatantly twisting the facts as is done in this case. A foreign secretary is the boss of an ambassador or high commissioner deputed anywhere. How a foreign secretary is supposed to willingly demote himself just to become an ambassador is beyond any logical understanding?

The reporter cunningly cited an example but in a different perspective. Shamshad Ahmad was sent to Pakistani mission in New York but it was a routine transfer within same rank and he went there on deputation. A foreign secretary is the boss of an ambassador and how can he demote himself to become an ambassador.

  1. Maleeha Lodhi is going to take over from haqqani

  2. I have also read this hilarious report. It says that “Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir is likely to replace Hussain Haqqani as the country’s Ambassador to the United States”. The story never ends here it goes to fill Foreign Secretary’s position in this fashion. “Pakistan’s Envoy to China Masood Khan will be replacing Bashir”. This is very bad precedent to set. Pakistan is already passing through a critical face and it cannot bear such jokes especially when they emerge from leading news paper. For me, Hussain Haqqani is an inspirational man. He really worked hard for promotion of Pakistan’s interests; he should continue work as Ambassador. Apart from being a dynamic man with an impressive personality he has a number of outstanding achievements to his name and has worked for Pakistan and served internationally at various fronts. He has remained spokesperson, special assistant and campaigner for members of the Pakistani Government from time to time. During his tenure he has represented Pakistan in international forums such as the SAARC and Common Wealth Summits. He has also personally accompanied the heads of the state on their official visits to other countries for talks and negotiations.

  3. Is that the guy from dumb & dumber!? Such a Manipulator indeed assumes himself he is king of ORATORS to deliver in English & in Urdu in an amazing speed. This guy knew about the Kerry Lugar Bill Controversy Matter & with his crooked face & twisted lips he will sit with Americans & lie through it all before this poor & ignored nation of Pakistan on behalf of Zardari unlimited support.

May be Hussain Haqqani did not take any lesson of this following song:

All I know HUSSAIN HAQQANI will be remembered forever basis in Pakistani Political History as a declared “TRAITOR”

Listen with all ears Hussien Haqqani now you’re crying over split milk under American Pressure of War Against Terror — I’ve already incorporated almost seven years back & categorically stated at South Asia Tribune of Shaheen Sehbai the Washington DC based Internet Magazine that — “You Americans have been UNDERESTIMATING to Muslims as they are not like Japanese or Germans” — at that time Americans, Britishers & Indians Made fun of mine Claim but TIME has been proving I was Right!

  4. Hussain Haqqani is there to stay and by the way, why government would be unhappy with this guy? He is doing tremendous job for Pakistan. He represents Pakistan as well as the Muslims worldwide through his writings and works. Moreover, he has frequently been invited to comment upon and discuss issues regarding Pakistan, South Asian affairs, Afghanistan, Islamic politics and radicalism on various TV news channels which include the likes of BBC, CNN, NBC, PBS, CBS and ABC. There should be an end to this conspiracy against Hussain Haqqani. Let me tell you, this false report can’t change or demoralize him; it was actually made to divert attention of the government from other issues. Jang group and The News must stop propaganda against government. Geo Channel only chants “Jeo Aur Jeeny Do” but how pensive their actions are, we all know very well.

  5. Jaffar Abbass leave Geo & rest of other Channels - Just pivotal point is HH/he was author/drafter of KL Bill & before the same his own published book. — May I remind you or you would accept what he had incorporated in his own words which are being denied, manipulated or twisted various time in his own presentation even on Geo TV according to you if HH was correct then why HH asked for PARDON before Kamran Khan of Geo TV — HH should have firmly STAND on his previously stance.

Hence Jaffar Abbass accept the same other wise I would provide the entire necessary links here-at this forum.

*Durgat Buntee = What will be the after affects right after discussion with me “Don’t Care.” as you Mr. Jaffar Abbass is smart enough to handle the same if you may think fit for the same.

  6. In November, Syed Saleem Shahzad, Pakistan Bureau Chief of Asia Times Online, wrote that Rehman Malik was at the top of a list of names that the military asked Zardari to remove from office following the publication of American journalist Seymour Hersh’s article about Pakistan’s nuclear aresenal.

“The military establishment has seized the moment to hand over a list of names to Zardari of people it believes should be immediately replaced. At the top of the list is the ambassador to Washington, Husain Haqqani, whom the army has always regarded as a foe for being too close to the American administration. Minister of the Interior Rahman Malik is second in line”.

Neither Haqqani nor Malik were replaced. Once again, the pattern plays out the same way: a Wishful Journalist writes his wish; if it doesn’t come true, the Wishful Journalists wait a few months and wish again. It seems that too many of our prominent journalists spent their time writing out their wishes rather than simply reporting facts.

  7. There is a difference between wishing for something and reporting something. Unfortunately, this is too often lost on our journalists who prefer to actual reporting to only say something that they wish would come true even if it is not based in any facts. This is not journalism. It is only wishing. Making wishes is not the same as proper journalism. It is fine for me to wish to be rich and good looking, but no matter how many times I write an article saying I am rich and good looking, it does not make it come true. Actually, it is just a waste of everyone’s time.
