By Ali Yar Khan • Aug 18th, 2008 • Category: Politics, Worth A Second Look • 16 CommentsWhether through the charismatic diplomacy and pleading of the interlocutors of Musharraf or through the back door convincing of Saudis or through the behind the scenes arm-twisting of American, at least Pakistanis have seen the materialization of their mandate given on the 18th February and the tinpot dictator is no more at the helm of the affairs and the fortified Presidential Palace has released it’s captive to the abatement of many.
Next Issue, “Safe Passage to Musharraf”? Why in the hell? Why are we still living in the 1971, when the leaders and the people were alike in the awe of the generals, no matter if they had equal share of dissecting the country int two. Why is it that we are still in the rigmarole of whether Musharraf should be brought to justice or not, why is it that we are still unable to shed our cringing grovel of dictators? History has shown us again and again as how fragile, frail and fallible these dictators and how they are handled by the time itself. Take the example of Ayub Khan, Yahya and the most recent one Ziaul Haq. The time has also brought down the Pharaoh of Musharraf into a bleating hunted looking for a safe life.
Pakistan Army’s current chief General Ashfaq Kayani is the gent who knows what it takes to remain like a gem despite of living side by side of the disgust and dirt of the politics and why should the organized and immaculate military should refrain from taking part in the civilian affairs. That is why he allowed a transparent elections, and that is why he hasn’t come to the rescue of his former boss, who has broken every record of shamelessness and stubbornness, and now people had to drag him out of his den.
Esteemed nations don’t let their criminals go without justice. We have suffered enough through the hands of Musharraf and now it’s the time of payback. Make him a precedence, so that no dictator would ever again try to hijack the country.

President Musharraf announces resignation:
President Pervez Musharraf announced in a televised address to the nation Monday that he had decided to resign after nine years in power to avoid the threat of impeachment.
“After viewing the situation and consulting legal advisers and political allies, with their advice I have decided to resign,” a grim-faced Musharraf said, backed by Pakistani flags and a portrait of the country’s founder.
“I leave my future in the hands of people.”
Musharraf made the shock announcement after denying that any of the impeachment charges against him could stand and launching into a lengthy defence of his time in power.
“Not a single charge in the impeachment can stand against me,” Musharraf said. “No charge can be proved against me because I never did anything for myself, it was all for Pakistan.”
He said that there was now law and order in the country, that human rights and democracy had been improved and that Pakistan was now an crucial country internationally.
“On the map of the world, Pakistan is now an important country, by the grace of Allah,” he said.
The President dismissed the “false allegations” being leveled against him by the coalition government and said he was neither afraid of the charges against him, nor shy to face these through impeachment.
“For me it is always Pakistan first”, Musharraf said and added that politics of confrontation must come to an end and instead a policy of reconciliation be pursued.
He stressed immediate measure be taken to arrest the economic downturn and said the nation has the resilience to withstand any challenge.
He said it was not a time to show bravado, but to get serious as country’s dignity was at stake, the office of Presidency would bear the brunt.
“For 44 years I have safeguarded the country and will continue to do so.”
“No charge sheet can stand against me. Not even a single charge can be proven against me as I have full trust in Allah Almighty and I did everything with the belief of Pakistan First.”
The President said he took all decisions with consultation, took all stakeholders onboard, on the most difficult decisions.
“All stake holders, whether they were soldiers, politicians, bureaucrats, members of civil society, Ulema were consulted in all decisions. “I have nothing to worry about the charge sheet,” Musharraf said.

“Esteemed nations don’t let their criminals go without justice.” Unless they are democratically elected, is that it? Given the chance, I would hang both Nawaz and Zardari, and their followers before I would touch Musharraf.
If you had a memory that extended beyond the last two years, beyond the last nine years, you would be singing a different tune today. In fact, if you had a blog that went back to 11 years of Democratic rule, you would no doubt be eating your own words, because you seem to be one of those people bent on criticizing whoever is in power.
I look forward to coming back to your blog in a year’s time, and making sure that you do, indeed, eat your own words.

You are right but please don’t put every body in one line. There are few good people, who always stands with their views and arguments. You must keep visiting TPS and comment. We need to chance the system, not personalities. Today one of my fellow wished me on his resignation and asked whether it is good or bad. I couldn’t answer his question because I’m unable to foresee any sudden change in near future. We don’t have clear direction at all.
Ms. Sofia, I often wrote this line on this blog that WE ARE LIKE HEARD OF SHEEP. After few year Shepard changes but his work remains the same. Just see and observe this line by practically applying in any field of life. Lets select Education: In 80’s… every body wanted to be Doctor and Engineer. In 90’s… trend changed toward Social Sciences Studies like MBA. In late 90’s…It turned toward IT… In early 2K’s… It shifted toward Telecom Engineering and MBA/IT etc etc. wholes Nation runs towards one side in Education. Reason is Lack of Vision and clear guidance. We can’t select good people for governance when we believes in Materialistic and Short term Goals. Our country actually believes in it. Short Cut and Immediate Response.
Allah! please guide us on right path and show us right direction. Keep us united and dedicated.

President Musharraf at least proved that he has always kept the interest of Pakistan ahead of anything. After fighting all alone for six months with the opportunists of the time and serpents like zardari and nawaz sharif, he gracefully addressed the nation, prayed for its future and called it a day.
He will be remembered in the history as the only able leader of Pakistan, who tried to change the fate of this nation and almost put it on the road to prosperity.
Unfortunately we are made hostage to a handful of greedy political families who never want to release this nation out of their clutches. They want to keep all resources under their control and treat the ordinary people as slaves.
I was astonished to know that when sardar Mengal was offered the post of President of Pakistan he replied ‘I prefer to be a peon in a liberated Baluchisatan than to become president of this country’. What a shame. These are the real traitors and looters of our country.

Who made them to come back and rule us again???? Why country couldn’t produce a single leader in these 9 years who could win the hearts of people. after all people had no option left to select same people when they saw that no new face is here and people sticking with Musharraf are the same, who are part of every party since 1980’s.
It is easy to condemn politicians but same politicians were never allowed to work freely. In one way or another, President/Army Chief was like horror on them. When ever some one tried to ditch these both positions… nation see another long dictator rule. Is Dictatorship only option left to tackle bad governance? In short, it is only power game going on in the country. Who every gets power…he tries to throw other out of ring and so on….
Now Army position is weak in politics so they decided to be neutral in this present fight. If it would be strong then we would welcome an other Dictator. Lets pray for better future which is also a dream for me right now.

I will tell you now. a year from now the economy is going to be in complete shambles, mullahs/taleban will rule the streets of Pakistan, all girl schools will be burnt to the ground and our foreign reserves will be -ve….You can sit on this forum then (which tends to attract loads of people with no vision and common sense) and talk about how effective the Zardari/the bauld man was and the whole transition to the fake democracy!!….

I don’t think so. The hand over of the military powers to new COAS, sending of Army to barracks and later holding of fair and transparent election cum transfer of power to civilian government was all planned, executed and all delivered by Ex-President Musharraf himself. He delivered and delivered it on very clear terms. Let’s give the credit to a man who deserves.
He appeared on the Pakistan horizon of Pakistan and against all the odds planned an enlightened life for ordinary Pakistanis. He has the zest, ingenuity and resourcefulness and really relished his stay and enjoyed his tenure. He delivered what all he planned and is now gone.
He saved this Pakistan then when Pakistan was in a fix and the thick of aftermath of 9/11. He sacrificed his own seat even now and has saved Pakistan from anarchy, turmoil and mayhem.
He came on the scene from military or civil; what ever he was; he was a loyal patriot Pakistani. History will certainly remember him as a saviour.
In my opinion whatever has happened had happened indeed, and their is no use to cry over the spilt milk but to infer various lessons from it and to look ahead towards the future.
Truly and frankly speaking it has been a day of mixed emotions for me. It has been a sad day and has been a happy one too.
Despite all my diffrences over the Judical crisis and the way Dr AQ Khan issue was handled (the reason of which I completely understand from the Retired General’s prespective) I regarded hium as a fine man.
During his era atleast we had a continuity of policies, watever they were. Let us be fair in analyzing the present situation in view of International situation, the inflaion is currently a global phenomena and therefore it could not be blamed in any way on one person.
His actions in Balochistan, how much condemnable must be looked into with the past history of Nawab Akbar Bugti himself spearheading a millitary operation against Khan of Kalat and others back in 70’s and that too under an elected government leadership.
Bugti was no angel. However we, the nation tend to be too eager to jump on a bandwagon and are quite good at wailing at any and all the death’s wether they be of some martyrs or rebellions. Please take it here that I consider Nawab sb as neitehr of the two but our nation did take it in either of the two categories.
The actions that rocked the ship of the Commando President were that pretaining to Judical crisis. The crisis in itself was a self-made one, thanks to the advisers and the leeches around the President and his advisers. However being a head of state he can never be absolved of his actions only because he was given a wrong advice for ultimately the question is where did the buck stop???
I felt juvilant when I heard him say he resigned for being a member of this vast nation I too did take part in Judical restoration camapign and in the heat of moment raised many “untheical/immoral slogans” against the Ex-President.
However what saddens me is the fact of the matter that he leaves the country in the hands of the people who are no lesser innocent then him if not more the culprits.
Zardari announces the plan of Impeachment right after the last of the cases agaisnt him have been withdrawn. Nawaz is on a personal vendetta spree and that was the reason he so eagerly put Restoration of Judicary as a second point on the agenda list.
Of the two above mentioned, Zardari has been accussed of massive corrupttion. Someone asks me that hey, you people go on drumming about on Zardari’s corrupttion, has anything been proved in a court of law???
My humble reply to all those is well their is a diffrence between white color corrupttion and a blue collor corrupttion. What our great kingmaker has done has always been the former. And despite the fact that he has amassed such huge wealth and despite the fact that so many cases have been persecuted against him he was inteeligent enough to cover his tracks.
And those doubting his intelligencia should look the way he acted in this particular Impeachment issue.
With regards to the fact that wether the General should be prosecuted for his actions…………….my reply would be “Yes indeed he should be but so should all the others be re-prosecuted whose Swiss cases and Murder cases had been shut with the help of NRO”. I say he should be prosecuted so that we the nation know the reason and evidence that he had in his hand while acting the way he did. And find out from his prespective that wether his actions deemed to be necessary from where he sat or not.
It should not be out of a political vendetta or a personal vendetta. Ch Nisar Ali Khan has been drumming around alongwith Nawaz Sharif for a trial but it has nothing to with finding the facts but it has only been to please themselves (Nisar is calling so because he was the one who recommended Musharraf and feels guilt for all the mess created later on).
Let the public find out the reasons behind the decisions of Lal Masjid operation or claiming the Bajur attack to be ours while it wasnt the case.
Let the general public find out that how much weak we were as a nation on the eve of Sept 11 2001 that we had to necessarily take that U turn on Afghan issue.
Let the general public find out why so many people are missing ( and I do believe that most of the people and I say not all are indeed meddled up in some fishy affairs which pretain to National Security however I do not support this action).
Let the general public find this all out via an open trial because our Media is free but noit fair.
Our media has become a party to the present scenarion. Our media has decided to take upon itself the role of a prosecuter rather than that of audience.
Our Media has lost it all, the analysts have become biased, those who were found praising the government before March 9th have become critical of actions of the government even before that.
Our Media has decided to get into mudslinging and portarying one-sided story for that is what indeed could be sold these days. And its all about selling. The credibility of not going on air after Nov 3rd has been lost by the observations of the estemeed journalists. ( I frankly guess they are aiming for a couple of Ministerial posts like Shery Rehman or chairmanship of some corporation like Dr Shahid Masood).
In the end let me just state that let us move towards the future with an eye towards the past so as not to repeat those mistakes.
Let us move ahead in the future with the hope that with the Joint Enemy No 1 of both the coalition partners they still continue to work together and that too for the betterment of this nation and not for themselves or thei families.

Reading articles and comments today has been like they are “press releases” from both camps. It is called spinning the truth by both sides. At least the Pakistanis have learned something from the American political system.
I sincerely pray for the country and the people. You all need to work together and heal. The issues ahead are not just terrorism, but most importantly improving the living condition of the common man along with the economy. Knowing the people of the country of birth, they are easily incited and emotions are high. Sweets are being distributed by the “winning side” and “mourning and funeral prayers” by the followers of ex-President Musharraf. A man is being made a myth and new fears are being created of the “what ifs” of what is to follow. The end reality more illusions being created. Both sides are guilty of this.
I pray, I am proven wrong and that the people come together and not just in the interest of the few, but in the interest of the country and people as a whole. The blessed month of Ramadan is coming and let’s pray that God sends His Mercy to Pakistan and all Pakistanis, ameen.

Its the greatest loss that would haunt the pakistani nation for decades. Musharraf is a man of honour. The current parties are the most corrupt ever known in the history of this country. Its a pity that we all will have to face the deteriorating situation further and there is no one to take of all the nonsense the ruling parties bring with them. A TOTAL DISASTER FOR THE COUNTRY PLUNGED INTO FURTHER INSECURITIES IN ALL SPHERES OF LIFE.
