Dubai Crashing Down : Gwadar Should Benefit
By Dr. Hassan Isfahani • Nov 30th, 2009 • Category: Politics, Worth A Second Look • 8 CommentsThe Dubai authorities used every kind of tactic to keep the Gwadar port project of Pakistan underdeveloped and underutilized. There was no brotherhood in that regard as usual and as we are dependent upon their aid and oil and we die to work in those countries, we didn’t utter a protesting squeal for our right. Now the fake facade of Dubai is crumbling and though the rulers of Dubai refuse to accept and face the reality, their ambitious and foolish projects like Dubai World have proven last nail in the coffin of Dubai Bubble.
Media is the witness that the arrogant ruler of Dubai, Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, had continually dismissed concerns over the city-state’s liquidity and claims it overreached during the good times. When asked about the debt, he confidently assured reporters in a rare meeting two months ago that “we are all right” and “we are not worried,” leaving details of a recovery plan – if such a plan exists – to everyone’s guess. Then, earlier this month, he told Dubai’s critics to “shut up.” We feel sorry for the people and media of Dubai that they cannot even say what we have just said about the ruler and his dopey projects.
Dubai World, and other projects including a tower even taller than the Burj Dubai and satellite cities in the desert have punctured the balloon and now Dubai is nothing but a debt-laden state, which doesn’t have any oil or industry or anything else to offer to get out of this dilemma. That is the difference between a One Man Show and the proper accountable government. Just compare Dubai with Singapore and you will understand what I exactly mean. Moreover, Singapore hasn’t even wealthy, oil-rich neighbor like Abu Dhabi.
Another reason why Dubai was bound to meltdown was the way it treated its human resource which all comprised of expatriates from Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh. It never respected them and gave them true regard. It always took them as paid-servants. Some naive Muslim people from Pakistan, India and Bangladesh went to Dubai with the misconcpetion that they would be treated as Muslim brothers as they share the Islamic nexus with Dubai, but their misconception often got evaporated right as they landed at Dubai Airport.
Pakistan should build up Gwadar Port and attract the returning, heavily skilled, and experienced human resource from Dubai. Along with Balochistan government, the federal government should develop industrial zones, promote shipping industries, improve fisheries to leverage full potential of the port. We must give shutup call to anybody from across the sea.

I fully agree with the thought provoking ideas of Dr.Hassan Isfahani, my heartfelt compliments goes to him on this very true picture and authentic suggestion for our policy makers. I would only add, “The province of Balochistan has to be on board”, (the provincial government, the social and political leadership, the media and the youth of Balochistan) infact they should play a leading role (as they have already suffered a lot since the independence due to the federal control.
Sharing my dreams with Dr.Hassan Isfahani and our Baloch brothers and sisters I really hope that Gwader can be a revolutionary project for the development of Balochistan (especially interior where citizens of Islamic Republic of Pakistan are still living in the Stone Age!) which would ultimately help Pakistan’s image, and economy in the whole.
That’s why I request the Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani to announce a ‘Advisory Borad’ for this particuler project. InshaAllah this will help our exports, tourism, industry, general image as a country. At the end I would say ” Pakistan doesnt have much better opportunity then this and we should take it as “blessing of Almighty Allah”!!

Dear Dr.Hassan,
Please read my post in TPS ” Jihadies of South asia ponder”. I agree with you completely but as an educated Pakistani , can you absolve yourself the responsibility of NOT pointing out the clever games Sheikhs and Kings in Middle east play against common people of Subcontinent by Using the Feudal political leadership (using Army leadership In Pakistan ) while blackmailing Indian Big fat cats through D company goons.
Exploiting ordinary South asians who work in Dubai is common story and especially maids are also sexually exploited. Basically every Indian,Pakistani,Bangladeshi is looked down upon because of their poverty while the Arabs lick the white Europeans who LORD over them while getting 10 times more salary than Asians for similar work.
The sabotaging of Indian Cricket by terror especially IPL while the pakistani Cricket is killed by the SriLankan assault and black mailing through DRUG MAFIA.. Why Pakistani cricket is played in Dubai or Sharajah?
KARACHI, BOMBAY USED TO BE FINANCIAL CAPITAL OF WHOLE OF ASIA EVEN RIVALLING SINGAPORE when Dubai was not even known. Today?
PAKISTANIES MUST PONDER.
Dubai is not going down so soon. UAE will blanket it. While Gwadar is being haggled over by the world powers.
Pretty ambitious doctor, but I appreciate your initiative.
I agree with you on treatment of folks from sub-continent being treated like slaves in middle east specially emirates. They work on nominal salaries, have no rights and in some cases even though they give their full lives to emirates don’t get the same benefits as a local.
Gawadar is still some way from capturing the same position as Dubai or Bandar Abbas in Iran.
Dubai would have never raised like that if we would developed Karachi at early time but zia ul haq policy of creation of mqm like parties had destroyed the goals of this economic hub and at that moments UAE got its momentum to raise its financial status in international world. We are decelerating from our original position due to our narrow mindedness as our leaders are not coming out of their ethnic differences.
Gwadar port is in control of army men and they are not allowing balochi govt to get share from it that is why handpicked Baloch representatives are being killed by our agencies or local rivals having back support of army. This is creating huge sentiments of hatred among locals. At this moment FC is controlling his provincial matters and no rule and state writ is being seen everywhere in whole Baluchistan.
So projecting gwadar as safe and prosperous port is a dream of any patriotic and ambitious Pakistani but when our army is busy in war, suicidal bombers are roaming in our streets, Political ambiguity is dominating in our state matters, no body can think of shaping this dream.
