BBC World News to broadcast special news reports live from Pakistan

- Matt Frei returns to present two special news reports from Pakistan -
London, June 23 2009. BBC World News presents three days of extensive coverage looking at the issues facing Pakistan and Afghanistan from Wednesday 24 to Friday 26 June. The in-depth news reports will air on BBC World News’ BBC World News America programme at 23.00 GMT.
On Wednesday and Thursday, BBC World News America will be co-presented live by Matt Frei in Pakistan and Katty Kay in Washington DC. All three days will feature interviews with major players and in depth investigative reports from the BBC’s specialist correspondents on the ground.
“The ongoing struggles in Pakistan and Afghanistan are absolutely crucial to global security, and there is no news organisation in the world better equipped to tell this vital story well”, says executive producer Rome Hartman. He adds, “Matt Frei reported from the region just after the 9/11 attacks, and now he returns to lead a crack team of BBC correspondents covering every angle…military, political, and humanitarian.”
Key programming elements include:
· Matt Frei interviews major players including Hamid Gul, former head of the ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence), Pakistan’s intelligence service.
· A report looks at the controversial detention and interrogation of terrorist suspects at Bagram, a U.S.-run prison in Afghanistan. The BBC’s Ian Pannell talks to a number of prisoners who allege physical and psychological abuse where thousands of detainees are being held. The Obama administration maintains the prisoners are terrorist suspects and enemy fighters and is trying to stop any change to their legal status.
· An inside look at how security forces in Lahore are combating the rising threat of terrorism. BBC correspondent Orla Guerin goes on patrol with police as they search for Taliban operatives and talks to a suicide bomber who was recently arrested.
· Matt Frei looks at how Pakistan’s middle class has responded to the problems facing their country, why they have not been more visible, and the part they might play in shaping their country’s future.
BBC World News America will also deliver all the latest U.S. and international news of the day.
