AKP Escape Narrowly

By M. Waqas (MPA) • Aug 3rd, 2008 • Category: Politics • One Response •

Turkish courts on Wednesday rejected the plea of prosecutor to put ban on ruling AKP and their prominent leaders’ Premier Recep Erdogan and President Abdullah gul.

The verdict ended months of political uncertainty which has hit Turkish financial markets, at the same time it’s a serious blow to the secularist who wanted to win the lost battle in the premises of court.

The European union which turkey hopes to join, has also criticized the case saying the kind of charges raised by the prosecutor should be debated in parliament and decided through the ballot box, not in the court room. In this context the present court decision is victory of Turkish democracy.

It will be interesting to mention that some years earlier one Turkish parliamentarian lost her membership of parliament because she insisted to wear scarf while sitting in parliament. But now the same parliament is passing laws to allow head scarf in public places colleges, universities and offices. However constitutional court scraps the law but with the passage of time all of this will be a matter of history and Turkish people will be liberated from the cruel clutches of secularism.
