Aga Khan Injured

By MK • Mar 14th, 2008 • Category: Misc • (2,070 views) • 6 Comments

The spiritual leader of the Ismaili community has been severely injured in a skiing accident. He was flown to a hospital in Boston where he remained admitted before being flown back to his Paris estate. But interestingly this incident has been kept under the rugs and away from the scrutiny of public eye. Some of this secrecy is understandable given the precarious position in which His Highness finds himself. He is an old man and there are rumors on the future of succession in his community.

Prince Karim Aga Khan has three children. Princess Zahra is the eldest of the three but ineligible for the post of Imam because she is a women. She however is Aga Khan’s right hand in managing his estate and business, spread all over the world. The other two choices are princes Rahim and Hussain.

Aga Khan has a budding community spread in more than 35 countries of the world. The number is estimated to be around 12 million. Some of the good work done by the Aga Khan Development Network include establishment of institutions of learning ranging from primary schools to a university, promotion of Muslim architecture and alleviation of poverty.

Some of the elements within our society have religious reservations about the Ismaili community. But in my observation these reservations are often based on hearsay and rumors. Some of the reservations are a part of a misunderstanding growing from lack of intermingling.

It is unfortunate that the Aga Khan is hurt in an accident. What is so interesting about it, why must everything be sensationalized. What has gone wrong with Pakistani mentality, why can’t we learn to respect the sentiments of our other fellow citizens. The Aga Khan is the spritual leader of the Ismaili Community and they are very close to him and usually do not like his name to be dragged around in the context of Pakistani way of looking at everything.

Aftab to be clear Aga Khan is not a Pakistani citizen, he holds French nationality. Second of all there is nothing sensational about the news itself. Third of all talking about his injuries shouldn’t in any way hurt the feelings of anyone.
What is the Pakistani way of looking at everything?
Reporting about his injury is not ‘dragging his name around’.
How does talking about his injury or accident belittle him? I fail to understand.

I am a member of the Ismaili community and would like to comment. I think its wrong to suggest that the Aga Khan was “severely” injured in a skiing. That he was injured is true but I don’t think any rational person would consider it to be severe. In fact the Aga Khan has been very active since his injury occurred and in no way has the incident been “kept under the rugs” . If this was the case you would not be reading about it on the internet and I would not be commenting on it. This is not to downplay the injury but to create a sense of balance regarding its nature.

Also I would like to make it clear that in no way is his position as Spiritual Leader of the Ismailis precarious nor are there any rumours or speculation surrounding his succession. On the contrary the Ismaili community are celebrating the Golden jubilee of Aga Khan’s ascension to the Imamat of the Ismailis. Moreover, like his Grandfather before him we look forward to a platinum and diamond jubilee in the future.

He is not Pakistani, he more than a Pakistani. Agha Khan is one of the most respected leader all over the world. Pakistan is grateful to Ismaili community and Agha Khan family for their firm and un conditional love and support in present and past.
