A True Story of 9th April: Existence of Latent Terrorism?

By Farid Masood • Apr 19th, 2008 • Category: Politics • 25 Comments •

This is a true story of a person who faced the riots in Karachi on 9th April 2008. The identifications have been eliminated due to some specific reasons. Brother of that affected person has told us this story, it is being appended in his words:

“My brother is a government officer and residing there for years. Therefore, his face seems like residents of Karachi and his accent is also like them. I heard the news on TV and called my brother and asked him to be careful while returning home and avoid such and such areas. He replied I do not have to pass through that area, so have peace of mind. I instructed him to call me after reaching home. After one hour I called his wife and asked about his return, her reply was negative, then I called him but could not connect to him. We all became worried about his whereabouts praying to God for his life”.

“After four hours he contacted me and told the story in my brother’s words is as under”:

“We reach that place and some people was firing in the air and asked us to stop and come out. Then they asked us to remove our shows, which we did. They pointed gun on me and I shouted that I belong to your community. Then they turned to my driver who is a Sindhi and started to beat him in-humanly. I appealed them that he is my driver and I take full responsibility of him, then they stop beating him and asked us to flee and set my car on fire.

We ran away and searched for a hide nearby as there were some important documents were in my car and I wanted to see them burning completely. We remained in that hide until my car was completely burnt then I returned home”.

This is one story out of many of 9th April. There were many other stories of May 12, 2007 and stories of those who died in various other events like these two.

Who were those guys holding arms?
Who were those upon telling that I belong to your community left that government officer?
Do they belong to ANP, JI, MQM, Sunni Tehrik, . . . ?
Why they are wondering all over Karachi?
If they are such powerful that they can do anything, then they also may forward illegal demands in near future?
Is there exists a latent terrorism?
Is there rule of law exists?
Who is involved in weapons supply in that city?
Who has the power to put containers to block roads?
Is there a need to make it an arm free city?
If the state’s allies are doing this then the writ of state is challenged?
Who are in power can they be declared as terrorists or this applies only to then who are waiting for their turn?

Above questions are burning in the mind of every Pakistani, is there any answer to this or we should close our eyes like a pigeon when the cat comes?

  1. Please correct severe grammar errors. Very distracting. Just use MS Word for God’s sake.

  2. What you are doing is called - FEAR MONGERING. There are better things to talk about than these “inside” “firsthand” base less and useless rumors. Keep on doing your job - you will fail as people are smarter than your estimation. Tough luck for you and your kind of rumor mongers.

  3. Aftab S Alam

Just read the title of the article, Its not the stage to tell the readers a rumour.

  4. And off-course the actions of the government is also telling the same thing after the incident of 9th April, so come on its time to open our eyes in every front if we have to live with respect and safety in this country and if we have to give our next generation a peace ful land not a fearful jungle.

  5. Mr farid masood . It is impressing that your are striving your best to impart your thoughts and and ideas in to words ,at and on the verge of terrifying and terrible climax and terror . but your inquisition if I perceive in the light of a writer or columnist is not more than a person craving to get attention of community by floating ideas based on self induced ,innate ,dominant ,bias ,malifide ,and self cultivated monticule.
My dear ,what is the core point of your discussion ,and what is the idea behind ?do you want to say all this in the contest of existing political forcein karachi .If yes ,then i would say that ,being a writer you should highlight your reservation in a clear and clean theme.
in my opinion if i scrutinize your expressionless expressions and quality of twist that you tried to paint, has lexis your motive and core idea .you have indicated your reservation by owing a community of sindh and disregarding the other as urdu speaking, thusin a real sense floated the idea that perhaps it was a riot that took place against some ccommunity based motive.
Mr massod, what is the point of igniting the issue in the theme of racial cadre? may i know your intentions and motive behind to utilize such a platform of intellects and communication for your kiddish and very untoward and malafide thinking?what is the point of floating such weird , creepy and self narrated story .
Mr massod did you gone through the latest riot that took place in multan ,were you not oriented to see similar show of weapons in the mob .why is it the pinching point for you if similar weapons are now the priority of karachiites as it was the honour of pakhtoon ,baloach ,and sindhis.why are you so worried about to make karachi as a arm free city ,why dont you use this word for whole of pakistan?
how many places in pakistan ,you had the opportunity to visit ?how many times you had the opportunity to interact different peoples and races in pakistan? in my opinion its the system of people of similar thoughts that are the main nuisance that are neting the distances in our nation.how many times did you visited karachi .there is nothing like that between any community bearing and breathing in karachi .sindhis ,pathans and baloch are normally assign very important duties at our residences and major institutions are employed as gun mansand security holders .which is the responsibility delivered to the indivisual that is credible in the eyes of the employer .similarly every community is satisfactorily regulating and running every busines and social organisation with no heart feelings and reservation, like a single karachi based origin. i suggest to hold such exploiting reservation that ignite and create distances betwen our brothers of different caste cadre, and races .regards

  6. Perhaps due to lack of command on English, Farid Masood is unable to convey his true feelings? Dr Raza, perhaps may be he doesn’t truly mean what he wants to say?

  7. But this is good generous thing on the part of Pakspectator that they are giving chance to not-so-lucid-English-writers and grooming the writers along with some best writers in the town at their site. All in all Pakspectator is a grand and chic place to relish the words.

Keep up the good work, and Mr. Dr. Raza, I liked your comments too.

  8. Fareed Masood wrote “Is there a need to make it an arm free city?”

Why not make whole Pakistan, including Baluchistan & NWFP, as weapons-free? This is the kind of double standards and bias which leads to extermism and anger among the people. More people died recently in NWFP in a feud between two groups than on April 9th, how come no one is saying that NWFP should be arms-free?

Very interesting that it is claimed as part of tradition and culture to own and display arms for those outside of urban Sind but when Karachites are forced to arm themselve just like the rest then it becomes a national issue and grounds for security operations !

    Your

  9. Clarification to my earlier message - “Your” in the end was left by mistake. Sorry.

  10. dr razahaider & Zaib Awan

i have conveyed my observation in a silent manners. And I bet that I have visited Pakistan than any body else visiting TPS, Just see blow:

I have visited almost 75% of Balouchistan, 30% of Sindh, 80% of Punjab and 25% of NWFP. I have met with many families and poor people living in rural and urban areas arround the four provinces of Pakistan.

    Kheshgi

I append part of my comment # 4:

“in this country and if we have to give our next generation a peace ful land not a fearful jungle.” so my thoughts are not limited to one city.

  11. Clear directions are hidden in words of article, left it for the readers who point out mistake in english (present or not) but cannot understand the point of view

  12. Farid Masood, I simply have to stick to my comment above which I need not repeat. But if you like I might add, your views are so weird that one might just as well reject them as merely frivolous. Such narration of “truth” coming from “direct” source is a load of bull…. and must be treated the way it deserves, just leave it with the initiator and don’t propagate such crap. It is useless at best and injurious at worst. So, please!

    Respects.

  13. dear mr farid masood .sir there is nothing in the the run that may be regarded as element of annoyance ,shout and anger .i appologise if any content of my thoughts were painful and reserving for your kind soul. you see comments on such platform are liquidated to get the view of a community of intellects and readers so to reach a possible conclusion in the form of opinion at large .being writer one has to face multiple criticism in the form and format of words ,abuse and some times physically .quality of the writer is that he affectionately accept all such reservations of his reader and rectify the same on his next entry in the syllabi.this is developed by continous and static maintainence of temprament and expertise on skill with research before getting on air . expressing and floatings comments that may open up a controversial discussion should never be floated on the policy of compulsion but it is exercised from credible platform in which writer is the principle element of credibility and his weightage should always be exemplified in the light of his reader as ,geuinine speaker with a reppport of non bias ,origin and city based belonginings .any person floating idaes from different sites ,scenes ,places ,origin and belonginging can not criticise the community based issue and if it does he would have to face such retaliation.my point is just visiting such place does not qualify a subject to express his opinion as legitimate opinion holder .you got to interact ,reside.and communicate before you can express the feel of your opinion..as to your attitude as a writter ,i will suggest few point so to pay attention on how a writer need to play after he puts somethiong on air .there are few sugesstion ,you should try to follow these .
nevert revert back on the topic.
reversion and contesting reader on comments explains that your subject was faulty.
let criticism be carry out .
see if this criticism is valid or in valid .if invalid be calm and quite ,people will know them selves after multiple such opinions.
if criticism is valid rectify and sort out the inquiry and rectify it .
read multiple times before delivering on air .try to get opinion of people around and expert in vocbulary and literature.there is no harm and to shy in it .english is not our mother tongue.
these sugesstion will definately assist to groom and improve you as a future writter.regards.

  14. dr razahaider

Just check the spelling of your word “vocbulary ” or the commas separating sentence should be with the ending sentence and not with the opening sentence. any how If the message is understood then the language is right. If i point out corrections in your comment # 13 then it will create a rift between you and me. I being very open to comments don’t want it. I think the theme of this post has gone in the back ground. I write it again here:

who-so-ever is involved in riots in any city of my motherland should be punished with an iron hand, the Karachi has proved to be a city of riots then the same feelings are there for the betterment of city peace, safety and prosperity.

    kind regards

  15. It looks from your article that you are engulfed in the flames of hatred and animosity to Mohajirs. Punjabis has never learnt any lesson from the past especially fall of Dhaka.

I am ashamed of being a punjabi myself and I know we are usurping rights of others for sixty nasty years, capturing 97% of Pakistan’s resources instead of 66% (which we actually deserved if on the basis of population)

They were not immigrants but the owners of the newly formed motherland. You would nevere get this country freed from Hindus and British empire without the sacrifices of the forefathers of these immigrants or Mohajirs (TUFF Hey tum per!!).

I am a punjabi myself but our stupid freinds/brothers hd started problems first when they started calling them ‘Mohajirs’ and now they calling themselves mohajir and everybody gets irritated.

Think and Think (all my freinds) if they could get a country fighting two enemies they can get another one fighting just one enemy.

You must accept MQM as a reality and be responsible in writing dubious languge and using bad name for them.

I think, they are better Pakistanis than ‘Punjabi’ who wanted to come to Lahore in Indian tank, a ‘Sindhi’ who wanted India to attack Pakistan to give Musharraf punishment, a ‘Pathan’ who wanted to bury in Afghanistan and was against the formation of Pakistan and a ‘Baloch’ who said during 1971 war we were waiting with garlands for Indian army wishing them to enter Baluchistan

I request everyone don’t try to open a Pandora box you all living in Glass House and don’t try to corner MQM for any reason it would only be good for our common enemy.

  16. First i think we should not talk about sindhi ,balochi ,pathan or mohajirs as our Qauid has always said.We have great challenges ahead of us both domestically and internationally. We can only face them if we stop talking this shit.As for MQM is concerned i think nobody has a problem with it.Only problem is anarchy and terrorism they are pursuing in karachi.
So nobody is against the MQM

  17. My friends
The concept of creation as a writer is equally as important as it is for the critic to analyse with appropriate care and consideration. We all talk of “tolerance” but it is important that we display these attributes when it comes to words as it is important for all to understand. No one is perfect and as long as the message is understood then I think its suffice enough to pursue the conversation with logic and wisdom. And nowadays even the media, writers, and all who are in the publishing industry and print have to face the same problem and accomodate this level of intolrance and logic.

As far as the message of this article is concerned, I believe that we all have to think very hard as writers and as readers that we too are part of this society and as Pakistanis we must protest for all things that are bad and highlight.

An age old saying in a utopian world that we may never be able to please all, but enough to understand that pointing out something wrong is not a sin, and accepting our shortcomings tells a lot about the person and its character. So lets work as a united force and remove all elements of hatred and perceptions amongst ourselves.

  18. Latest “words of wisdom” as per Farid Masood:

Farid Masood says : “Clear directions are hidden in words of article…” ! ! !

Help, please! The man seems to be a little confused, correction, very confused! Fareed Maso, please, red it again and try to make the “clear direction” a little clear and don’t “hide” them anywhere.

Come on man, think beore you write.Use your head and not heart, even if you are pretending as a thoughtful person. Either you failed to convey what you wanted or you communicated what you as a “simpleton” really feel - deep rooted hatred. To cure your ailment you chose a wrong forum; you need someone who just sits and lets you spit it out while you are lying on that “famous” couch. Believe me it will help, after all the venom comes out of your system.

    Good luck.

  19. Aftab S. Alam

Come on its yours country as well as mine, but you don’t want it to be a peaceful place. Talking about karachi is due to any thing happens in country is rebounded in Karachi why?

I have talked about the peace in the whole country, Wana, Waziristan, Balouchistan. I am not the eye witness of events in Karachi, but i am eye witness of the peace in Balouchistan. I had never visited / resided any peaceful place in Pakistan like whole Balouchistan.

I repeat my message is clear if Punjabis are responsible for riots in Karachi they should be punished with iron hand so that they never practice it again.

I think i had mad my point of view clear to you. See into your inner-self.

  21. Of course, I am not at all disputing this truth- it is your country as well as mine. My point is simple. It does not help your cause (which I suppose is to propagate peace and harmony among various groups and communities) to opt for the route you have taken. You can not and must not use these cheap methods of sounding authentic (especially when in your own little way you want to blame a group for violence) by quoting imaginery witnesses, one narrating something that he / she reportedly has monitored sitting somewhere at a distance through a supposedly telephonic conversation. This all has no standing except perhaps convince you to make yourself a valuable thinker in your own eyes. And perhaps create even more rifts in different segments of our society. But, of course, this is your choice. Only, in my opinion when someone decide to go public with his agenda, which obviously you have done, then one must be careful about the modus operandi he / she chooses.

  22. Mr Fareed,

Do you think that you can convince them? You will find them always when you will write about MQM and Musharraf. They will hardly comment on social issue posts. It tell mentality that how much they are sincere to country or even to their self.

  23. Yes, perhaps you are right. It is always difficult to convince the thinking people by negative propaganda. Yes, in any discussion there has to be some intelligent argument and sound reasoning to be of any value, otherwise it is mere load of crap and should be left where it belongs instead of spreading it. And I have no illusion about Saleem Khan’s attitude and I really don’t think that it matters how he feels about MQM and the President of Pakistan; like I don’t think it matters how I or anyone feels about Saleem Khan. I can’t help him or you and anyone else if they are drowining in poison of hatred. Can I ?
