A man who failed to declare him self a Hero

This may be said that it was a coup that General Pervez Musharraf took over the rein, charge of Pakistan on the pretext that while being a Chief of Army Staff of Pak Army, on his return from abroad his aircraft was hijacked by then Prime minister of Pakistan, Niwaz Sharif to depose him for good. The hijacking of aircraft of the supreme commander of Pakistan Army was an act of wilful perfidy, amounting to put the entire command and control of Armed Forces in jeopardy and also to put the security and Autonomy of country at stake. But even then while in the air COAS was able to handle the situation. It may be called as a coup but he took over the charge of country and on resuming the seat of executive power of country; one can find that simply out of his desperation and being weary of the evils of feudalistic society and authoritative democratic system of governance. He planned to reshape the country, free from feudalistic theocracy and to give an enlightened democracy to the peoples of Pakistan.

It took him some 8 years to give an enlightened shape to country and one can say that man under the circumstances did deliver his best what ever he could. Lately as per his given plan, he decided to step aside as an executive of country and hold the free and fair elections, which could be said that it brought a real dawn of democracy in the country. We also know that after the incident of 9/11 attack, Pakistan was assigned special task to carry out its certain international obligations and to act as a front state in US lead war declared against ‘Global Terrorism’. It was felt that Pakistan who has been on the helms of affairs of previous Afghan war was suffering from the post war trauma. There were some elements found with in Pakistan in shape of remnants of Taliban and Al Qaeda who were indicted that; allegedly they carried out 9/11 Attack on United States soil. Pakistan committed to US that it will clean up its back yard of such miscreants.

Where as Pakistan has been trying to cleanse its back yard but on the other side the United States kept the noxious initiative in her own hand and on the pretext of the prevalent scenario of Taliban operating from the safe haven in Pakistan, wilfully moved in with all her sabre rattling and had since occupied Iraq physically as well as is in control of the entire of Middle East… militarily. Hundred of thousands people have been killed and millions are displaced. Consequently in pursuance of her adventurism, US have since moved in next door to Pakistan and have occupied Afghanistan. Taliban and other resisting forces from Afghanistan have trickled down here into Pakistan over a period to make FATA tribal areas as their safe havens. The provocative actions being under taken by US to attack these groups inside Pakistan at her will by means of drones and missiles in order to inflict destruction and pains have aggravate the situation to invoke a reaction from Taliban. The despicable acts of US insude Pakistan has not left much a space for Pakistan to manoeuvres around to achieve required goals. The cleansing operation of extremists from area has totally plunged into jeopardy and any military action against these forces to subdue them is adversely affecting and amounts to killing own kith and kin. These dissident forces at the face of it, rather than facing the bigger enemy US have avertedly fell prey to US deceitful ‘hegemonic plans cum moves’ and reportedly after having indirectly having received the huge perks and arms and weapons from their enemy agents have turned themselves into monster under the guise of religious movements in the area. They have started moving from their original stance to fight back the US onslaught on Pak- Afghan borders, toward the more soft targets inside Pakistan. They are seen creeping toward the capital-Islamabad under the disguise of enforcement of Islamic Sharia laws to take over the seat of power. They are challenging the writ of Pak government at every step and are spreading the anarchy and mayhem in the areas under their influence. US as an oppressor is seen here as successful in pitching the Muslim brother against other brothers in the land called a Fortress of Islam- Pakistan.

Mr. Musharraf, fighting as a ‘lone ranger’ has been in the thick of it; He has not dither an inch in his given resolve in the War against Terror. He may be standing there against all the odds but his this posture is to what avail; when for last six years the terrorism situation have totally slipped out of his hand and gone from bad to worse. It is challenging him and his government’s writ in all operational areas. The sheepish and slavish moves of Pakistan against US-NATO forces stance have resulted into total failures against US onslaught and to counter savagery of US Pentagon plans. But the only good thing that one can find to his credit is the socio-economic up lift of the country and we find that as per his given plan; he has also handed over the rein of government to a proper democratically elected people. He wanted to take a back seat like a gentleman and with grace. His each and every action has been for the sake of his country… Pakistan. From taking his famous ‘U’ Turn to safe guard his country after 9/11 incident. Attaining of a remarkable economic growth in the country and relieving his nation of international debts; alleviating the poverty; giving women and minorities a big representation in National Legislative assemblies; 22% seats are occupied by women in the National Assembly. A grass root level education reforms and freedom of the press and media. New entertainment TV channels have come up like mushrooms.

No one possibly may blemish the personal character of Musharraf and his patriotism as a true Pakistani; that what all he did under the circumstances; right or wrong; he did in the best interest of Pakistan. But we live in a one global village where Pakistan is seen as the epicentre of world top menace- the Terrorism. Pakistan has not been able to come out of it clean. With the given status of Front state to fight out the war on terror, in its own back yard, Pakistan possibly may not ignore the dictates of sole superpower-the United States of America. It certainly may not escape the repercussions of global war against terror. Pakistanis may not realize but the visionless plans and wisdom less moves and military actions in the tribal areas are turning this Pak land into a ‘World Future Battle Grounds’; NWFP and Baluchistan of Pakistan. Control in these areas is slipping away fast from under the feet of its defenders- The Pakistan Armed Forces. Under the present beleaguered Coalition Government; a total surrender and subjugation of Pakistan to the foreign forces seems very much eminent. A total subjugation to US; deprived of its nuclear assets, a torn apart disintegrated impotent and God forsaken society at the hands of US and India; sizzling in anarchy, mayhem and turmoil… and as a future bread basket of the world is the future of Pakistan.

To level up an ‘Impeachment plan of President Musharraf’ to get rid of him at this stage is a known popular US move destined for all the US proxies. US friendship starts with great pomp and show but there are always humiliations and gallows awaiting them at the end. Sadly; (Musharraf ka janna tther gia hey; subah gia, keh sham gia). That is for sure; but present day gimmicking of a charge sheet of impeachment at home on the flimsy grounds and wishful thinking to see him go out by the political alliance of Zardari-Nawaz sharif is just a Political stunt to divert the attention of public from the crushing socio-economic issues in the country.

Alas; he could have moved like a revolutionary leader and declared himself some revolutionary mystic maestro; a Zealot Hero and kept this nation united. Peoples in the third world only believe in mystic figures and their highly charged slogans of purported heroic deeds. He had the ‘tide and the time’ on his side but he failed there miserably. Possibly he can reverse the winds to blow back in his sails…even now!

They say; Roses ought to grow thorn on their stem to safe guard against savagery of belligerent creepers. But he failed to do that!

  1. I was just surfing through and came to FORECAST with Meenakshi Rani Of Daily Pioneer- India that I remembered; it was 11 August today and a Birthday of President Pervez Musharraf. One may not believe in the Forcast etc but I found some striking resemblances in the forecast and present-day turmoil faced by the gentleman: (Link; http://www.dailypioneer.com/Forecast.asp)

    LEO: July24-Aug23

A difficult week because you are the one in need. Be careful how you treat people as they are likely to take unpredictable decisions which can mar your progress if you aren’t careful. Your thought process is likely to be confused, defensive, lacking clarity and that can open doors for adversaries at work to get into questions of competence.

Be more mainstream in your behaviour and a whole lot more accommodating than you feel. Give and take is the mantra in money matters as well where deals are cracked only with the help of greasing people’s palms (unless you turn whistle blower) or by returning a favour - there are no free lunches!

Do not make the error of taking a loved one or a co-worker for granted, you may be left in limbo with more stress on every front. Avoid stress driven temper and angst.

Surprise of the week: Necessity will help you invent a few new opportunities for yourself

Tip of the week: Concentrate your energies on problem-solving than going to war

    Lucky number: 10

    Lucky colour: Pale green

    Best day: Sunday

    Lucky gem: Red jade

    Ideal food: Green apples

Gift to give: Traditional woven fabric

    Best time: 10am to 1pm

  2. Dear All,

There are few mistakes in central Para which could not be corrected/edited in time. I apologise for that and also sorry that this was bit lengthy article.

  3. Lengthy but a good read, though I don’t agree with most of the parts :)

  4. Mr. Khokar, when then Musharraf didn’t learn from history as now US is trashing its proxy after getting installed it with pomp and used it with relish?

  5. Canadian Largest News paper, Toronto Star published in an article about Pakistan, in Zia ul Haq era:
We don’t like Zia ul Haq, because of his mustache, and love Ms. Benazir Bhutto, for her beauty and charm.
Our leaders in west are not any better, than Pakisrani leaders. They will do worst corruption, if get a chance.
The reason is poeple in west don’t accept and allow them.
    Regards

  6. Dr. Ayesha,

Thanks for your kind comments; I have tried to dig the truth and present it here. Although the predictions at 3rd last Para seems bit explicit and point-blank but it is consequential because probably our house does not seem being put in order. All else may be, may be put in order but in the wake of Talibanisation that it is on its rampage and all the defences put against it are crumbling like card houses; it will take us certainly down.

Please do comment, if you like on the parts which you think that you disagree with. I will certainly like to share your thoughts in those areas.

    Regards

  7. A. Khokar Sahib, you are right in your judgment about President Pervaiz Musharraf’s over all performance. It is good and realistic analysis of his tenure and one must agree that in all the public matters and policies he has been guided with his great sense of patriotism and dedicated national interest. You wrote a truth and do not require endorsement of any biggots and fake intellectuals who have blinded themselves with their personal hatred.

I wonder what is it that really interests them in addition to things that leave their pallets pleased and taste buds little stimulated (and whose sense of nationalism is limited to sajji, lassi, pan and such trivialities). What is it that they consider of any consequence to the national interest. I have failed, and frankly disgusted, to see all such ‘pseudo intellectuals’ staying quiet on such important issues and matters of national interest, shame on our national apathy and ‘intellectual’ bigotry (following is an extraction from a recent article - ‘The brutalizing law’ by Mr Kunwar Idrees:

“…………The sectarian divisions since then have been exacerbating and turning violent. But no government has been able to bring itself up to scrap the laws and policies which have institutionalised intolerance and hate. Now all sections of society are its victims — the majority as much as the minorities. An agenda that was essentially political in the course of time has become a mindset to which the moderate, the tolerant, the intellectuals and the judges all have been succumbing. Let it be illustrated by a few recent events.

First, a gathering of religious leaders over which Mr Rafiq Tarar presided has ruled that any Muslim who changes his religion must be put to death and his property confiscated. Mr Tarar should have known that the country of which once he was the president is a signatory to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. That declaration enjoins religious freedom which expressly includes the freedom to change one’s religion. If he was a conscientious objector to this policy of the state he should have refused to become its president where, in any case, for all of his tenure he remained a silent spectator of fateful events.

Second, a prison vast enough to accommodate 50,000 persons — men and women, young and old — may soon have to be established if the courts of law agree with the police and state prosecutors. These had held that by wearing badges which bore Quranic inscriptions the entire population of Chenab Nagar (Rabwah) had committed an offence that is punishable with imprisonment of up to three years under Pakistan’s penal code.

Third, 23 students (five among them girls) of Faisalabad’s Punjab Medical College were summarily expelled from that college by the principal on the complaint of the youth wing of a religious party that they were seen preaching their faith.

Human rights organisations worldwide have apparently taken notice of these incidents and will draw their own conclusions which, at a time when Pakistan is in the limelight for the prevalence of extremism and for sheltering terrorists, can be only scathing. Who is to be blamed more for Pakistan’s descent from a peaceable to a brutalised polity — the laws made by its assemblies or the bombers produced by its seminaries — remains a dilemma. What is not in doubt is that public opinion and the courts of law failed to play their part…………”

  8. Dear Rubab,

Some time back on 5th Jan 2007, when deposed President Saddam Hussein of Iraq, a staunch Arab ally and a proxy of US was sent down the gallows; I was able to write few words which were published in a renowned Middle East paper; Daily Star- Lebanon under the caption; Too late for the Hero.

Musharraf has also been serving US interests. All the proxies have got their ‘sell by date’ and then abruptly they are discarded. So have the Musharraf and all others who are in line to replace him. Fate line of all the proxies is the same. Please go through those few lines:

    Too Late for the Hero

The shake hand with Rumsfeld which sent Saddam over the moon; resulted adversely into mass killing of his opponents; but it did bring in some good results in the field of job assigned by the god father; He achieved a marked success in containing Iran and depleted her in a long war of attrition. He proved himself to be the best US ally and a staunch Proxy.

While he was walking on the air; he took this bliss to be an ever lasting and was blinded to think beyond.

The mission of god father was accomplished as per plan. It was time to say; good by to the valued friend and accordingly plugs were pulled. He had come to know this, in Kuwait attack drama. He was horrified to find that he may not see another full moon. But when he had realized it; it was too late for him. He found his regime lost and Iraq the dream land of his empire; reduced to the rubbles smoldering of some stone age.

In an obvious play let of his prosecution; it was irony of his fate that the whole world knew in advance; the out come of his show trail. Although; he kept the might of his self pride high till last and he did not bend his head till his neck snapped on the gallows.

He left a lesson for all the dictators and monarch of Arab world that while performing as proxies; (active or may be passively); beyond the life of their bliss; only one thing is certain; a colossal betrayal by their god father; bringing them only the humiliation; deprivation for their people and a gallows awaiting at the end.

  9. Does not follow the trend of ‘Musharraf-bashing’. It was a good and refreshing read, partly because it is the truth, and partly because I feel the man did a lot of for the country. But, his greatest mistake was the NRO and that will haunt him and Pakistan for a longtime to come. I only pray for Mr. Musharraf safety. The dogs are off the leash!! May the Almighty protect Mr. Musharraf and the nation.
One question: is there any news channel in Pakistan which is not biased at present? I am convinced that our ‘independent’ media has been responsible for our present state of affairs.

  10. Shaikh Sahib,

I agree with you that media is responsible for the current political situation of Pakistan. I think there is nothing we can do about it due to the literacy issues.

Our nation is so sensitive that if this media uncover that Mr. Bush was the main guy in making of Pakistan, our nation will believe, without investigating or even thinking the merit of this ‘investigative’ news.

    Allah hamain Aqal de, Ameen.

  11. Quite an article considering the so-called “Free media world” we live in which is currently a party to all this and fails to mention the accomplishments of the man alongwith his mistakes.

I guess he did do well in his initial three years, went a bit worng by getting the PML-Q into power yet went on fine.

His so called fatal decisions seem to be Lal Masjid, Dr AQ Khan and the Judges.

With regards to Judges he was pushed against the wall and had no wehere to go yet it aint an excuse and he did go wrong their, Lal Masjid operation tunred as his disadvantage due to the way “free media” exploited it. Had it been an operation in FATA away from the lens of camera nothing would have been minced. However he did make some startegic mistakes their.

Dr A Q Khan case is something on which I may agree and disagree with the President.

Overall the economic position he brought us in and the way he handled things seemed to be quite fine.

And if we cannot accept him as a Hero ( for Heros are deemed to be ones who cant make strategic mistakes) we must acknowledge his past accomplishments and give him a gracefull exit even if he stands out and fights the Impeachment motion which is his right.

  12. Quite a truthfull analysis Aftab……

Let me just add that I happened to have seen a BBC analysis in which the authour says that ” The Dictator would not spend the rest of his life thinking that why those who benefitted from him and those for whom he cared for abandoned him”

My guess is that the Dictator didnt realize that those surrounding him were just the leeches who know well how to suck everything out of you and keep you company but when it comes for them to provide you with something in return for all the blood they sucked off you they simply turn and make their wa to the next target ( read as victim).

And only then does the Dictator realize that all his Heroism was an imagniative shell that he was enclosed in.

  13. Hero? what hero, who is even talking about heroism? Talha, let me ask you what I asked Maham somewhere else here and I repeat myself here: Don’t you know who we are? We are that “great” people who shamelessly consider it an honour that history will remind our coming generations that once we hanged a democratically elected prime minister, an enlightened, a charismatic leader. Now, we are at it again. Don’t disturb us we are busy sharpening our daggers to get our president against whom there is no charge of corruption and we are letting those, do the job, who have a visble trail of rampant corruption and abuse of power.

  14. here is why these mush lovers are crying:

  15. Dear Aftab S Alam,

    Your comments at 7 above

I can well understand your pain and anguish in the light of human rights issue and how the sanctity is being tarnished by the vicious designs and ill will practices of Mullahs. If we only know that there are some 6.5 Billion people living on this planet; out of which only 2.6 billion are Muslims which indicates that some 76% of God’s population on this earth are Non-Muslim, non-believers. One can safely say that this planet belongs to Non believers or to the Kafirs. How possibly our self styled Mullahs; boasting as some kind of zealots in religion; void of any wisdom or knowledge can come up with some logic and reasoning to convince the non-believer and deliver them the message of God.

By issuing the verdict against the populace of Rabwah and declaring Ahel-e- bait(shias) as non Muslim or imprisoning them; well do it and make your own crafted gods happy? But for sure, I know that Allah does not want this; there is no compulsion in religion; the truth stands clear of falsehood. Allah very well knows the short coming of his creations; people might have not accepted Islam for any reason but they believe that there is one God to whom they have to warship, then their good rewards lies with Allah only. Allah says: [2:62] “Surely, those who believe and the Jews and the Christians and the Sabians - whichever party from among these truly believes in Allah and the Last Day and does good deeds, shall have their reward with their Lord, and no fear shall come upon them, nor shall they grieve”.

In the light of Allah’s verdict given in above surah; our ferocious Mullahs vindictive dictates go where?
Let them wander in the wilderness….

  16. Please stop, think again RESIGNING IS THE BEST REVENGE, MR. PRESIDENT
“revenge is a dish best served cold” It means that to be successful, revenge should be a considered and planned response enacted when the time is right, rather than a hasty and ‘hot-blooded’ action which will increase the chances of failure.

  17. Dear All,

Musharraf may be the most patriotic and thorough bred, a staunch and loyal Pakistani but only one thing goes against him that he did not come through electoral process. But our history is full of such zealots found gracing the seat of power who have appeared there by the lateral entries. (By the way the entries under the cover of NRO and elections arranged specifically for the benefits of ‘NRO specific few’ will also come in the category of lateral entry).
Whereas lateral entry is an unwanted stigma and its practice must be curbed but one thing can be put to the litmus test; was President Musharraf loyal to country or not; is there any corruption charges against the maestro or not; did he bring the good will for the country and people life was felt as good or not? If we get all the yeses, then we may forget about rest of the things.

He dealt with the governmental affairs they way he felt best!

But most of us seem rightly weary about one thing; the NRO business; which he has rather done a blunder here. Although in his good faith and mutual understanding; the man accepted the dictates of US to consider a reconciliatory order to facilitate an opportunity to the defunct politicians so that proper democracy returns to the country and life takes a fresh start. In such like situations where the so called civilian leaders for their evil deeds had remained struck out from the political life and on exile for so long; their reconciliation or amnesty were the good omens. Reconciliation in it self is good but it has the requirement of its process that all the beneficiaries must pass through the doors of truth; seen there repenting at the entry and promising to take a fresh start with a distinct forbearing and humility in the future.

On the contrary the BB, Zardari, Nawaz Sharif and their cohorts were made to land safe in the country as free Scots on the well laid red carpets of …NRO.

This nation may forgive Musharraf for other sins but history may not forgive him for handing over the country to the known pilferers, looters and thugs. It is but obvious that these beneficiaries’- stooges would certainly like Musharraf be seen off from the scene. These second bananas, thankless creatures will for sure bite the hand which feeds them. Their free sailing also depends upon Musharraf going down defunct and thoroughly humiliated. Safe exit for Musharraf; simply can not be afforded by them. Musharraf has to be the first causality of this new era.

Musharraf probably is not a good student of history also. He even forgot that he happens to be the US staunch proxy; History shows that no one could be a better US proxy in Arab world than Saddam Hussein in Iraq. But this business of his; cost him his country as well as a show trial and gallows awaited him and his team at the end to silence them for good.

No safe exit for the Maestro; lest he fights back vigorously and turns the table of NRO on his arch rivals.

  19. Dear Sir:

Thanks for writing such a nice article/blog/post. It covered many things but I have some reservations on the credit you are giving him. The main is Economic Growth

You wrote, “But the only good thing that one can find to his credit is the socio-economic up lift of the country and we find that as per his given plan; he has also handed over the rein of government to a proper democratically elected people…. and …. Attaining of a remarkable economic growth in the country and relieving his nation of international debts; alleviating the poverty; A grass root level education reforms and freedom of the press and media.”

Facts and figures are some times becomes very helping to show actual results and efficiencies. Lets start with Foreign Debt. Every body knows that Pakistan received more than $ 10 billion in last few years for fight against terrorism. regardless of this huge cash inflow, According to State Bank of Pakistan during the last six years external debt increased significantly. As on June 30, 2003, it stood at $32.46 billion, June 2004 ($32.93 billion), June 2005 ($34.04 billion), June 2006 ($35.97 billion) June 2007 ($39 billion) and now at the end of June 2008, it jumped to $44.47 billion.

You said, he has also handed over the rein of government to a proper democratically elected people…. Has he gifted it or first snatched it from same people and then returned back due to foreign pressures. How we can give credit to a man who snatched it first and then gave back.

You wrote,…Attaining of a remarkable economic growth in the country and relieving his nation of international debts…. I already gave figures of last few years. In addition to this, I want to remind you that Pakistan has issued Billion and Billion of Bonds in International market. It also became source of foreign exchange in last 5 years but Mr Khokar, my son and your son will pay back that load. Means our next generation will clean dirt of Musharraf and his allies. Keep this in mind. If you issues bonds then you have to pay back amount on maturity with high interests too.

You wrote, alleviating the poverty….. Just one single question… alleviated poverty from India or Pakistan? because statistics and economic reports suggests that maximum suicide due to hunger taken place in last 6 years in the history of Pakistan. Other figures you already knows.

You wrote, A grass root level education reforms and freedom of the press and media.” Where is this gross root level education reform. He did reforms in only Higher Education System. But my reservation is this that in last 8 years, we invented only one Eduction Minister, who claimed 40 Suparay in a Quran. if this was a part of reform then it is fine. Apart from joke, Dear Khokar, Education was reformed for only rich families in Pakistan. Those families whose children were unable to get admission on merit in Public Universities, Professional Colleges etc… now getting admissions on the basis of Money in NUST, LUMS, COMSATS, and many more universities and above this, they gets job too. because their parents have sources. Indirectly, this government introduced new way of snatching rights form the deserving candidates.

Please see figures of Government that how much they gave grant to LUMS only. it is in multi millions. Who is getting credit from it? A common man or elite class only? Why Government not gives grant to Institutes like IBA and Public Engineering/Medical institues so they may uplift their standards and can accommodate more students to study on merit basis.

It is long story Sir. I’m not comparing this government with previous ones. But comparing Pakistan with India/China and other neighbour countries. If you want to see the growth level of Pakistan then don’t compare it with previous regimes. Compare it with your parallel economies and then you will find actual results. In last 62 years we only heard this much and that much GDP/GNP/Per Capita Income like figures but practically it doesn’t exists. Dear In last 62 years, if I compares….with the world, if would be better that we sit idle because every hour our country works, it results in more loss.

I will inshallah write on this topic for readers knowledge but it is fact that if our whole country will sit idle then it will result positive on economy. We in economics calculates it by performance bench mark called “Total Factor Productivity”. I hope that soon I will be back with this topic.
