2008 Pakistan Election Update
By Ali Yar Khan • Feb 18th, 2008 • Category: Pakistan Vote'08, Politics, Worth A Second Look • No Responses •Chaudhry Pervez Elahi, the former chief minister of Punjab, President of PML-Q and General Musharraf’s favorite candidate for prime minister, is very optimistic than even most mainstream leaders of the Pakistan Muslim League-Q. He polled is vote in Gujrat and told media bombastically, though touch apprehensive, that he expected the party to win “100-plus seats” of the 148 National Assembly seats in Punjab Province.
As the polling hours are creeping by, and just 3 hours remain in the closure of polling, PML-N is getting hurt by the violence. One of its provincial assembly candidate was assassinated in Lahore along with its four companions, and in Chakwal district, many of its workers were injured by the opponents. Some incidents have also been reported from Multan and Sahiwal. PML-N has accused PML-Q for the violence, whereas PML-Q has pleaded not guilty.
The Nazims and Naib Nazims have also been allowed to become the presiding officers, and that is, according to PPP and PML-N is a freeway ticket for rigging to PML-Q. Most of the local government belong to PML-Q and opposition parties have already shown their apprehensions over that. Many political pundits have shown their grave concern over this situation and they say that even though Pakistani parliamentary elections turn on local politics, Elahi’s projection is exceptionally generous.
In Sindh PPP is clean sweeping the cities and villages of Sindh except Karachi where MQM is riding high. Balochistan is marred by violence and boycott calls where NWFP is heading towards a colaition government.
